I'm new to the whole linux world, and I installed XWindows and Gnome during
the initial install. I am running Debian 2.2. The problem that I am having
is that XWindows loads automatically on boot. I've been trying to figure
out how to keep it from loading, but haven't figured it out. Can anybody
point me in the right direction?

I have the same card in my laptop. I use frame buffer and the XFree86 as
the Xserver. It works fine at 800x600 16bpp.
You have to use the "trident" driver. Don't forget to start your computer
with the option:
vga=788

Get the following in messages (and forced to manual fsck when
rebooting):
kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
kernel: 03:07: rw=0, want=901626272, limit=14337981
kernel: EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,7)): ext2_readdir: directory
#244865 contains a hole at offset 1885667328
What does this mean, and what can I do to prevent it from happening
again?
Just upgraded to R.H 7.1 (from 6.2), and haven't seen this before.
Kernel is 2.4.2-2.

If you can ping by IP number, but not by hostname, that is the
diagnosis. if you can do neither, then you do not have a default route
through ppp. Either way, learn to provide data, please! (Not tales
of your impressions of what your think you dreamed you may or may not
be able to do ....). We need the output from /sbin/ifconfig and
/sbin/route.

This is an error on your file system. Do a 'touch /forcefsck' and reboot
- that should solve the problem for now.

I think there was some errors in 2.4.2, which could lead to filesystem
errors. You could upgrade to 2.4.4 manually.
If you do not want to do it manually (ie. downloading kernel source,
configuring, compiling and installing the new kernel), you can wait
patiently. RedHat has announced, that they will soon release a
bugfix kernel (due to a firewall issue).

Unfortunately I will not be able to paste all the info, into this message.
I am running Debian potato. My ISP is with Sympatico HSE.
I have read through many How-to's and I am still stuck... a little nudge in
the right direction would be perfect.
I had a DSL router before and everything was perfect.. my linux machine was
on the net in seconds flat. Since then I have got rid of the router because
I want my linux machine to be the gateway to the internet.
I have been editing way too many files and I am sure I have screwed things
up. Unfortunately I can not get that machine back on the internet to do a
re-install so I have to work with what I have. A bunch of floppies and do a
re-install.. or work with what I have and just fix it up some. I vote for
the later solution.
The desired outcome would be.
Internal network (Localhost gives out DHCP address's)
-------------------------------------------------------
localhost 192.168.1.1
range 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.20
broadcast 192.168.1.255
subnetmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
Sympatico's network is (PPPoE)
---------------------------------
DNS1 = 204.101.251.1
DNS2 = 204.101.251.2
Sympatico IP's look like
-------------------------
64.x.x.x
I also want to be able to have a local domain called... (HOME)
and I want to be able to connect to my machine from outside, using
something like (CJB.NET)
If I type 'netstat -r' or 'route -n' I get nothing, by that I mean, I just
get the title line.
If I type 'ifconfig -a' I get back eth0, eth1, lo, ppp0, and tunl0.
Like I said, I am not sure what I am doing wrong but at this point I can't
even get my linux machine to network internally or on the internet. Can
someone please help me. I already followed the How-to for PPPoE for debian.
What I am looking for is what should my route tables look for and
specifically which files should I be editing. Thanks in advance to all who
respond.

Subject: Statically linking with libnss

Hi,
I'm trying to put together a mini linux distro for an embedded system.
I've got a working system with a cut down linux 2.2.18 and busybox
statically linked against the glibc 2.1.3 resident on my development
box (Debian stable). I can ping the embedded system from the Debian
box on the same network.
The problem is in getting any network apps, which invariably require
nss, to work. I've read the glibc FAQ, and the info libc section on
nss, but I am still completely stumped by this after a whole day of
hacking. Any pointers to what could be wrong will be greatly
appreciated.
To investigate the problem, I'm using test-netdb from the glibc-2.2.2
distribution. I've tried two approaches, without success:
1. Statically link against the libc on the Debian box, and cp -a
/lib/libnss* to the target:
~/glibc-2.2.2/nss$ gcc -s -static test-netdb.c -o test-netdb
test-netdb returns NULL for every test except the first two:
gethostbyname("127.0.0.1") and gethostbyname("10.1234").
2. Build glibc-2.2.2 and statically link test-netdb against this and
the nss libraries:
~/glibc-2.2.2/nss$ gcc -s -static test-netdb.c -o test-netdb \
-I../ ../libc.a ./libnss_files.a ../resolv/libnss_dns.a \
../resolv/libresolv.a
test-netdb exits to the command line without printing anything.
AFAICT, it is dying inside the first call to gethostbyname().
Here are the contents of /lib, and relevant files in /etc on the
embedded system:
/lib:

I've never gotten the modem in mine to work reliably (RH6.2 on
an Inspiron 5000). Once I dial in and establish a PPP
connection, everything works well downloading, but if I try to
upload a large file (>40K or so) the modem just seems to lock
up. CD light stays on, but Tx and Rx lights stop flashing.
I tried all sorts of initialization strings to no avail.

Read the man page dhcpcd(8) especially WRT the -h hostname option. IIRC
your ISP gave you a client number (hostname) and you have to use it to get
your IP address via DHCP.

When I had the same problem it turned out to be a dying hard
drive. I confirmed this by downloading the vendor's disk
diagnostic software which reported that I had media errors and
should seek service.
You might be able to look for files in your .../lost+found
directories; that's where [e2]fsck puts files that it can't
reattach to the file system correctly. The filenames would be
numbers, corresponding to the inode numbers that they used to
have. If you have files in those directories (one per file
system) then I'd say it's even more likely that your disk is
dying.
As far as current backups go, you probably should restore from
tapes known to be created before the trouble started, presuming
that this is the fault of a dying disk.
G'luck....

Hi,
I installed RH7 on my computer from a CD that came with a book, and
created a user account besides root.
Then, I found a strange problem while I was logging in as the user:
The user account should be able to "shutdown", but when I type the
command, bash can't find it.
Moreover, even when I issue "su" and try -as root- to "shutdown", bash
won't find it. The "setup" command presents the same problem.
I tried changing shell, but it didn't help.
If I log in as root, then there is no problem.
The strange thing is that I had RH7 installed before from a different CD
(I don't have it anymore) and this problem didn't occurr.
Can someone help me to fix it?
Thanks,

The user and root has different path. When you do a "su" then you merely
change your id but the environment (path for example) is the same.
Try a "su -" to change the environment. man su, and look for the --login
stuff.

Just use reboot or halt (depending on what you want).
Besides shutdown is in /sbin, which is normally not in a users path
(only root's).

Subject: BestLinux 2000 - Gfx Card not supported??
Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 22:47:49 +0200
Hi.
I have problems installing or rather choosing a gfx card driver that matches
the gfx card that i have.
The list of supported gfx cards does not include the one that i have which
is ATI Radeon, 64MB DDR, AGP, Video in/out
with the following specs :
Bus type : AGP 2x/4x
Graphic processor : 183 Mhz ATI RADEON GPU
Pixel Fill Rate : 586 Mpix/sec
Ram type : 183 MHz 64 MB DDR SDRAM
RAMDAC : 350 MHz
Texel Fill Rate : 1,1 Gtex/sec
Connectiontype : VGA DB15, TV-out, Video-in
Triangles : 30 millioner/sec
It does however include a lot of other drivers for ATI cards so if anybody
out there have any ideers as to what other driver that I might be able to
install instead to get it working please let me know.
Best Regards
Michael H. T.

under StarOffice, so I installed RedHat-7.1.

You are going to have to tell the world what kind of USB/PS2 mouse you have
if you want any help getting it configured. Posting the appropriate
section from your XF86Config file will do you some good, too.

It's about 10 years ago, since I worked on AIX, since then,
Linux looks better. The Screen Font was Rom16.pcf, if I remember right,
then you could use it as X11 Font.
