hello,
I've got a Intel 166 with RH 6.2 and a PCI card is not recognized.
It's a ISDN card with a WINBOND w6692 chip.
After installation 'kudzu won't recognice the card.
The function 'lspci -v' recogize the card afterall with the following
output:
-Class: 0080
-IRQ 9
-Memory at f5eef000
-I/O ports at d000
-Flags: fast devsel
-Unkown device 5478 --this can be true, because it's not listed in
'/usr/share/pci.ids'.
The file '/proc/pci' recognizes the card also, only with more output
'Bus 0, device 10, function 0', and 'Unkown Class'.
This looks strange because "lspci -v' gives Class: 0080 .
How can I recognize the card, mayby with the values of 'lspci'.
Do I have to do that in 'lilo.conf' or with 'modprob/insprob', and how
Thanks
Hans

To compile the module you will need to log in as "root", or "su" to
root.
You can download the latest version of the Tulip.c driver from one of
the links below, or copy it from the Linksys disk that came with the
ethernet card:
http://www.linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=25
ftp://ftp.scydld.com/pub/network/tulip.c
Next you need to add a directory named "inet" to /usr/src/linux/net
with the following command:
mkdir /usr/src/linux/net/inet
Then copy the tulip.c module into the inet directory with this:
cp /path/to/tulip.c /usr/src/linux/net/inet/
First you remove the old module.
rm -f /lib/modules/kernel_version/net/tulip.o
In order to be able to compile the module you need to be in the inet
directory. This can be done with the following command.
cd /usr/src/linux/net/inet
Use one of the commands below depending on what is needed by your
system.
Be careful of typo errors, they will cause the compile to fail.
1.) To compile the Tulip module, issue the command below, it must all be
on one line:
gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c `[ -f
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo -DMODVERSIONS`
2.) For a dual processor system, compile it with the command below, it
must all be on one line:
gcc -D__SMP__ -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c `[ -f
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo -DMODVERSIONS`
Once compiled you need to install it as follows:
To install the new
cp tulip.o /lib/modules/kernel_version/net
You need to add the "tulip" module to /etc/conf.modules using the
correct device (eth0, eth1, etc...).
alias eth0 tulip
Now update the "modules.dep" file by issuing the following command:
depmod -a
>From this point most of the time all that is needed is to restart the
network for the new module to be activated. You can do this
with the following:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
If you want to check it prior to restarting the network, you can issue
the command below and then check /var/log/messages for any errors.
modprobe tulip.o
The the module is installed correctly, if no errors appear in the logs.
If you tested the install you need to unload it from the kernel with the
command and restart the network:
rmmod tulip.o

Hello. I use Redhat 6.0, split between linux and windows95. Under Linux, I had
it configured as such that I could read and write to any file, but not execute
it. Then the partition table become corrupt and I lost everything on both
drives. I didn't back up my fstab. Now, I reinstalled and can't seem to set it
up correctly. I am specifying the options conv=auto, mode=777, uid=0, gid=0,
and noexec. noexec is present in hopes of cancelling out the execute permission
on files, but not directories. The options above are appended to a standard
fstab line. What am I doing wrong?
Good Luck,

Subject: What Happened to my Partition Table?
Date: Sat, 15 Jul 2000 20:24:05 -0400
I'm running Mandrake 7.1 along with windows. Yesterday, I decided to boot
from windows into linux. I go and restart and instead of the nice and
friendly grub menu, I get a prompt, grub>. It says to hit tab for a list of
commands, I do that and try to run some of the drive loader commands. It
tells me that my partition table is invalid. uh oh.
So I try to use my boot disk which should hopefully skip all over all this
grub ugliness. But no luck, my kernel panics:
VFS: Cannot Open root device 21:06
Kernel Panic : VFS : Unable to mount root fs on 21:06
Now, I'm new to this whole linux thing so I have no idea what it's talking
about. So I go to something that I know, the trusty old windows boot disk,
wow, it actually works! I get to the command prompt, and run scandisk.
Scandisk finds a lost cluster in my file system, it saves it to a file. It
looks like this most of the way down, until it reaches the end until it
turns into that weird computer type gobboly gook stuff.
o d05bbfd0 37000 "C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE"
R d05bbfd0 0 40
R d05bbfd0 c8 f8
R d05bbfd0 c8 198
R d05bbfd0 1a000 1000
r d05bbfd0 1b000 1000
r d05bbfd0 16000 1000
o ce29f8a0 49d10 "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHLWAPI.DLL"
R ce29f8a0 42400 1000
R ce29f8a0 42400 1000
But of course this means nothing to me. Luckly, I have another copy of
windows installed on my other hard drisk. I boot into it, and wow, there's
my other window partition on the hard drive whose partition table linux
says is invalid. So, I think maybe I'll try to reinstall linux on top of
my existing partition choosing to only upgrade and hopefully I'll be able
to save the data on my linux partition. No luck. The install file says
that it cannot read my partition table and want's to reformat the entire
drive. No thanks, since my windoze drive seems fine.
Some info about my partitions: one 25 gig windows partition and a 4 gig
linux one, with a small swap one between.
Okay, so that's my story...is there any way that i get my system up and
running without losing much data?
Thanks a bunch,
Farhan Akhtar

OK, great, BUT, we now know the culprit, (oxidation) and you haven't
fixed that box yet. Pull the sticks, find an old yellow wood pencil, scrub
contacts (both sides) with the eraser. Watch tremendous bright shining occur.
BLOW away the crumbs, (wiping causes too much static) and put 'em back. Good
for 2, maybe 3 years.

With your Celeron and 64 megs of Ram, it is either the driver, or your vid card. I
run a PII 300 MMX w/ 64 megs of RAM, and I had a problem with X as well. There was
no support for my vid card, and even with custom setup, it wasn't optimal. I
swapped out my vid card with an inexpensive used one that is supported, and all is
well now. I also had to switch modems because I had a telepath x2 for windows. The
system can be picky about what devices you use, but it's worth the changes in my
opinion. I would have paid MUCH more for a development suite comparable to what I
got with Red Hat than I paid to replace my modem and vid card.

I have a 9.1GB SCSI drive at id 0, a 4.5GB SCSI drive at ID1 and a 20GB
IDE drive.
I want to scratch the current setup and install NT (don't ask, I need it
for work) and Linux, probably Red Hat, maybe SUSE, if it makes a
difference.
I'm not quite sure what my restrictions are with respect to what
operating systems can go on which drives. I seem to remember something
about not being able to boot to ID 1 if there is an IDE drive in the
system and that the LILO cannot reside too high on the disk.
Any suggestions on how to allocate the disks? I'd like to keep the 20GB
drive primarily as a backup device. (Don't laugh - a 20 GB IDE is lots
cheaper than a tape drive. Of course, you can't take it off site, but
who really brings their home backup tapes to work, really?)
Maybe NT C:\ 7GB and Linux root (2GB) on SCSI 0 (9.1gb) with the rest of
Linux on the SCSI 1 (4.5GB)? Would I need three partitions on the 9.1 GB
(NT C:\, LINUX low enough to boot then the rest NT?).
Testimonials and RTFUs (Read the Fine URL) accepted.
Much obliged.

alex,
look on your install cd, probably in a directory called /dosutils, for
the readme file which describes how to make boot floppies. You may find
there a list of different image files to boot from, for let's say,
booting from floppy for install, booting from floppy for net install,
booting rescue, booting normal, etc. Red Hat used to include the
rawrite.exe utility for creating diskettes from these image files.
Additionally, don't forget that the loadlin.exe (also probably in
/dosutils on cd) allows you to boot into linux from either within
windows or within dos, or even from a bootable DOS floppy. So, if you
have a bootable dos diskette, follow the directions and readme file with
loadlin, and you can make that diskette boot linux. You'll find
examples in the readme file which is included with each dos utility
which is on there. Another good thing about the
loadlin-on-dosfloppydiskette option is that it has no cylinder
limitations, so you boot diskette will work always, and so will loadlin
run from within dos and windows.
