Subject: Lucent Winmodem works
Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2000 01:02:13 -0400
Hi,
I am a newbie to Linux and I struggled getting my Lucent winmodem
working but it is OK now. I thought I would share what I did in the hope
that it would help someone else. See below.
Computer AMD450
Mobo - Epox MVP4
Onboard Sound chip VIA 82686
Onboard video Trident Blade 3D /VIA AGP MVP4
Lucent winmodem
64 Meg RAM (8 reserved for video)
Running - Win 98 : Win 95B : Win 3.1 : Linux Red Hat 6.1
Linux set up as a Gnome workstation only.
How I set up winmodem : In the BIOS, I disabled Com port 1 ( the
winmodem has its own com port). Mine is set up for
com port 1 and IRQ 4. My Mobo also has a choice under
the Power Setup, for selecting an IRQ for the modem, I
chose N/A for this (this is for wake up on ring).
I also chose PNP OS - No and Auto select
Get linux568.zip from Lucent web site
Unzip the package to an empty directory in linux
system. As root : run - ./ltinst - This should create
/dev/modem as a symlink to /dev/ttyS14
(in my system).
Then I ran Gnome Internet setup and chose /dev/modem
as the default device at 115200. Set up the phone
number for my ISP. I was OK to connect at that point.
I updated the rp3 RPM for Red Hat dialer to prevent two
tries to connect.
Next setup the DNS : I used whois.com to find the DNS for my ISP. My
ISP dynamically assigns IP addresses (changes
every time I connect)
so I had to set - search "myisp.net" (your ISP
provider). As root
run linuxconf and after it opens select :
Config | Networking |
Client Tasks | Name Server Specifications |
(DNS) | IP of Name
Server 1 (123.123.123.123)
IP of Name Server 2
(123.123.123.123)
Search Domain 1(opt) www.myisp.net
After the above it works like a charm. I am new to linux, but
if I
can help with anything send me an e-mail (remove "zzz" from e-
mail address.

Did you look at this document:
http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html
It's a troubleshooting protocol for ppp connection and contains
instructions on how to edit the files you posted (snipped) as well as
how to read the error log and what to do with the errors you find.

This seems to have been fixed in the 2.4.0-test4 beta.

Hi Frank,
The Lucent package 568.zip should have an uninstall file with it. I
believe
all you need to do is log in as root and run "./ltuninst". That is what
my package says.

This won't help, but you should go to 2.2.16, due to serious security
bug in 2.2.15 and lower.

Anyone know where I can get some information or HOWTO/FAQ on
installing and using a HP Colorado 8Gb IDE tape drive with
RH 6.2 - just want to be able to tar/cpio/dump to the tape.
OS recognizes that the tape drive is present - hdd - but I
can't get it configured. Sure could use some good advice.

I'm an ex suse6.4 user, currently running RH 6.2... I'm trying to get
setserial to automatically configure my com3 port (modem) to irq 9,

/sbin/init.d/serial but I can't seem to find the equivalent in rh6.2
can anyone tell me what I need to do to set this up?

Update the rp3 package with RPM from redhat. If you need the package

Hi Bill, Bit Twister, Valentin,
Thank you very much for all your suggestions.
I tried your solution, Valentin & it was a
breeze. O.K., after the 2nd try, because I was
not sure about the spaces between commands.
I hope I get more conversent with linux & if
I do run into trouble, I'll try your other suggestions - Bill &

The Linux kernel knows nothing about runlevels.
Runlevels are the domain of a BSD/SysV init (rather than an AT&T nTh
Edition Unix), and are used to administer the processes run by init.
man inittab will get you the details, and a good book on Unix will
explain the whole thing.

The config scripts are different in RH. Try putting the commands in
/etc/rc.d/rc.local. If you want to define a /etc/rc.d/rc.serial file
in /etc/rc.d/rc that's fine too.

Thanks for the feedback. Just to clarify, I', trying to get the
Basic package (~ 20 MB) installed, but the same proplems have occured
trying to get one of the other packages installed. My
/etc/apt/sources.list is:
deb ftp://ftp.au.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-us
I know that the ppp connection is ok, in that I can manually ftp in
another console to ftp.au.debian.org, but during dselect I get the
following problems:
During Update, nothing gets updated, and I get a sequence of error
messages, that are not on the screen for long enough for me to note,
and I don't know where to look for them on file or how to get the
messages directed to fiel (my Unix is very rusty).
During install, I get the following (typed manually from handwritten
notes):
Reading Packages Lists ... Done
Building Dependency Tree ... Done
0 Packages upgraded 0 newly installed 0 to remove abd 0 upgraded
W: Couldn't stat source package list 'ftp://ftp.au.debian.org
stable/man packagges (/var/state/apt/lists/ftp.au.debian.org
_debian_dists_stable_main_binary_i386_Packages) - stat (2 no such file
or directory)
and equivalent error messages referring to contrib and non-us
W: you may want to run apt-get update to correct these.
Can someone please help me rectify these problems

You'll need the ide-tape module loaded. Depending on your distro, you
can probably just "modprobe ide-tape". The drive may show up as
/dev/hdX, but to use tar, mt, dump, etc, it's referred to as /dev/ht0.
You can check operation, rewind, erase, or whatever with "mt", as in
"mt -f /dev/ht0 status".

make a script
rc.serial containing the setserialcommand.
Put it in the /etc/rc.d directory

Hi all I also have the same problem with the rh dialer. I have the
2.3.11-4 version of ppp. I have given up so I have entered all the details
into netcfg and dial through su from my own account. This seems to be the
only fix I have found!! Or use a third party dialer such as Xisp or ezppp.

Comments regarding grandmothers and sucking eggs, are totally pointless
here. Of course I cleaned the contacts (with a proper contact cleaning
tool and fluid). Good for possibly longer than 2 to 3 years. What had
confused me is that there were NO other manifestations of the problem!
