Hi all,

   I have a AMD 700 MHz on a Abit KA7 system with a PS2 mouse. I have
successfully installed Redhat 6.2 on it. Everything was except the
mouse. The mouse in Xwindows will hang after awhile. It responded to
motion but not clicks. I have to do a crtl-alt-backspace to kill the
Xwindow. After which, there is a core dump of the program
gen_util_applet.

Anyone has idea what is happening here? What is the purpose of
gen_util_applet? I tried with Redhat 6.0 but the result is same.

The "kdebug 7" isn't needed for most PPP problems and it makes reading
the traces harder.

Try using CONNECT \c instead of CONNECT "" ; this eliminates the
extra carriage return that is otherwise sent and which confuses some
ISPs. man chat.

This almost always means that the peer is sitting at a prompt or menu
and reflecting back the characters that pppd sends with the 8th bit
stripped. For more about this see the PPP-HOWTO.

I don't know why the TIOCNXCL error occurs after pppd was SIGHUPed,
or even what it means.

David,
Thank you. I tried the above and was able to go through the 'make
bzdisk' compilation with some warnings that whizzed by, but apparently no
major problems. I then did 'make modules' and 'make modules_install' with
apparently no problems.
However, when I tried to boot off the disk, it read the disk, reported
that it was uncompressing linux and then hung the system. Any thoughts on
what went wrong and how to fix it?

This is actually quite easy. You can even do it yourself my making a bootdisk,
install LILO to it, set the correctt options and you're done.
I know that both SuSE and Red Hat provide an option for booting via a bootdisk.

Did you make clean or make mrproper before recompiling? If you nave
a .config mv it to ../ before doing that.

Kinky! Put on a helmet when your girlfriend gives you the boot :).
Your modem is probably a brainless (controllerless) wonder called a
winmodem..
External modem->almost always real modem
ISA modem->usually a real modem
PCI modem->usually a winmodem
Check the website of you modem manufacturer. If it contains lucent or
PCTel chips, you can download drivers to make those brainless wonders work
under linux. The website is www.linmodems.org.
You might have to buy a new REAL modem.

VIA Chipsets are supported in Linux. Make the appropriate choice when
compiling the kernel (a distro kernel should be OK).

UDMA66 requires kernel patching or a newer kernel (2.3-2.4):

This is my current partition table:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 541 4345551 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 542 1027 3903795 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 542 733 1542208+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda6 734 925 1542208+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda7 926 1015 722893+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda8 1016 1027 96358+ 82 Linux swap

I'd like to remove Windows completely from /dev/hda1. Please note that this is the
only primary partition on the disk. If I were to simply delete /dev/hda1 partition
and add a linux partition as primary (or even extended / logical), would everything
run well?

Also, is it possible to resize my linux partitions? If I do this with Windows
Partition Magic, will linux barf when I try to boot, or will it "sense" the changes?

Please advise on striking Windows from this system! TIA

I would recommend install Mandrake 7.1 now for the evaluation and find out the
problems. (I am a RH6.2 user but Mandrake has a slightly newer kernel).

Just email or write to them. Many hardware manufactures are supporting linux now.
I am consumer, if it does not run under Linux I won't buy it. "We don't support
Linux" is not a acceptable answer. IBM will provide Linux support for their
laptops to mainframes this fall.

I don't know what kernel they are using in Corel Linux 1.1. Install Corel Linux as
soon as possible. If it does not work, after a couple of attempts switch to
another distribution with the latest kernel such as Mandrake.

Subject: Mandrake 7.0 won't install
Date: 16 Jul 2000 17:41:08 GMT

I tried Mandrake 7.0 this morning and it won't install. <sigh>
Maybe God is trying to tell me to run Windows?<g>

I get a

_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno=111

whatever that means. I don't even get to the install program!
The VGA card, if that's the problem, worked fine under
TurboLinux 6.0.

I checked the Mandrake web site under support and on one screen
they mention an error something like mine. They say their
autoboot.bat file is buggy and provide a new one. As instructed,
I copied it to the boot floppy as patch.pl and entered

linux patch

at boot.

Now I get a bunch of syntax errors, then the _X11 error. Seems
their patch is buggier than the original?

I emailed their support. We will see. I think I'll go back to
Red Hat next. Or maybe reinstall my old SuSE 6.0 and save $65.
At least the earlier RH systems installed and configured the
printer and maybe RH 6.2 will even configure ppp and Samba too,
none of which TurboLinux 6.0 would do. Then I'll have to figure
out how to make RH run Gnome (it probably only has KDE) - got to
get my $30 back out of my Sam's Gnome book!

I'm going broke buying Linux distributions that don't work! And
the Linux magazines and boosters wonder why Linux is not more
popular with people who try it out.

Subject: Re: PPP problem - chat aborts saying the serial link is not 8-bit clean
Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2000 13:03:48 -0500

I'm a Linux newbie, so be patient with me. I'm running Slackware 7.1, and
having trouble configuring the chat script for pppd to connect to my ISP
(regular 56k dialup). For brevity's sake, I'll just ask if the link
mentioned previously (http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html) is usable
in the version of pppd that comes with Slackware. If not, could someone help
me troubleshoot this. Included is a summary of what's been done so far.

A friend loaned me a "Running Linux" O'Reilly book which gave a sample chat
script for Debian. I tried setting up the script (with my dialup number,
username, and password, of course) and "chmod 755 chatscript" (Note: this is
all being done from root, in case anyone was wondering). When I try to run
the chatscript, I get a "file not found" error. I've tried setting the modem
up using "ln -sf /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem" and I'm not even showing activity on
the modem itself. Likewise with ttyS1. The modem is an external US Robotics
56k on the only serial port the computer has. The only other hardware on the
computer is keyboard, video card, and sound card. I was able to dial and
handshake in miniterm, but the connection timed out after handshake. This
leads me to believe that the chat script is incorrect. I'm at work right
now, so I dont' have access to the script itself. Any help on this is
greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Patrick

Take a look at the "parted" program, and plan plan plan your approach.
Check for information on copying partitions to new partitions. Too
