to me, kernel panic is a sign that you need to re-install the operating
system. I have had gotten the kernal panic message before too and it was
when I trying out experiments on my hard-disk. As in the previous post
mentioned, just make the default os dos. If you have more problems post
messages.

Hi,

I've recently noticed that if I issue:
rpm -q <rpm name>

I always get:
<rpm name> not installed

Regardless of wether it is installed or not. For example, I'll type in
the name of an rpm, like XFree-86, and it says the same thing.

Then, if I type rpm -i <rpm name>, it'll say - rpm already installed.

What gives?

Do I need to be ina certain directory when I query rpm's?

The 'p' means keep the same permissions. I have neva
used this. YMMV. 'v' means verbose, it lists all the
file in the tarbol on screen. I hate it.

Er, nope. I assumed you installed Mandrake from cd.
If you did, you should have the kernel source on it.
If you go to rufus (http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM/),
you should find kernel-source-2.2.16-9mdk.i586.rpm.

There are different kernel files. Check out
Rufus and you will see them.

When you installed boot magic, you wrote over LILO which you had written to the

MBR during setup. Now, LILO does not exist on your drive, and it must if you
want to boot Linux. If you don't have LILO on the MBR, then it must be on the
first sector of the / partition, an option you were given during setup. The
boot disk is expecting the configuration you installed, which no longer exists,

as it has been altered by the bootmajic install. Anyway, in order to install
LILO by any means other than during setup, you will need Linux running on the
target system. You probably have a utility provided by boot majic which will
restore the MBR to pre-bootmagic-installation form. (* 1) Do that, then try
running setup again and chose upgrade, and see if you can reconfigure LILO. If

not, exit setup and boot up Linux from the hard drive and fire up the LILO
User's Guide (it may be in /usr/doc/lilo-0.21 in ps form, if not, then on the
Doc CDRom if you bought the distro) , and have fun, and learn something! Or
just learn something! You'd save time just reinstalling from scratch, though,
anyone would, no matter their experience. Make sure to install LILO on / and
not on the MBR. But whatever you do, read the aforementioned excellent doc.
Take note: If LILO is not going to be on the MBR, then it won't be able to find

a / partition which exists (all or in part) beyond cylinder 1023. Moreover,
any logical partition that the / partition is on must begin and end before
1024. Regarding the message from Chem-R-Us, don't forget to run
# lilo -t
(the "-t" op is for test)
to make sure your syntax is straight, then
# lilo
after you have edited /etc/lilo.conf, or the changes won't be written.

Good Luck!
bcs

ps If you want to abandon bootmagic, do (*1), then edit as Chem-R-Us said, then

do (*2).

Interesting advice from most of the replys you received already, however
all you really need to do is...

1.) Boot Linux from CD, or floppy, which ever your case may be.
2.) Stop the install to get to a shell prompt.
2.) Install LILO, (Redhat = RPM)

This will replace your boot strap that Windoze stepped on as if you were
installing for the first time. I've done this several times after "experimenting"
with PC Commander and Partition Magic as multi-boot utilities. Both of
these actually byte hard. Also, I have seen the latest version of
Mandrake, (7.1?) multi-boot utility, (Boot strap executive) and it's VERY
slick compared to LILO. Don't know how reliable it is as I roll my own
using several distibutions of Linux and don't do the package thing.

Try: rpm -q rpm

If you use a wrong name or make a typo it will say the package isn't
installed.

XFree-86 is not the correct name.

Try: rpm -q XFree86

I have a problem with getting sounds, and believe the problem is with
the settings Linux thinks are correct. I know my sound modules and
drivers are current, system sounds are enabled, the card works great
in win 98. It's a PCI card, that I know Linux doesn't like, from
watching other postings. I even tried Mandrake, to see if it made a
difference, none. I was able to see some settings that intrigued me,
however, it wouldn't let me touch them! Mandrake has some sound card
wizard thing, and it showed all the resources to be '-1'. There were
drop down menu's, but they wouldn't take any input. I think Red Hat is
confused as well, and would like some guidance in 'forcing' the proper
ones. The bios on my motherboard, does not allow me to turn off PnP,
does this realy matter? Or, the fact that Gateway says the motherboard
was built for win98 only? I don't know. I think I'm on the right
track.....

I did the same thing. Although I didn't have a problem booting the
machine, Linux wouldn't recognize any SCSI devices. Here's what I did:
I booted the machine from the CD-ROM (IDE). I went through the install
routine. When it asked if it was a n ew install or an upgrade, I selected
upgrade. The install program automagically installed the correct module
and I was done. You may not be so lucky; I just figured I'd let you know
what worked for me. Good luck.

Thanks for the help...
After reading the documents you suggested I scanned all the memory and went
through each chip... there was no problem with it. So I disabled the
caching from Bios... still didn't work. After this I decided to compile on
my p3.

Not knowing much about Linux, it took me a while to figure out how to
compile the kernel, but, by blindly following the help files, I managed to
"downgrade" the CPU the kernel was optimized for to suit my 486, then I
recompiled, and then updated Lilo.

I put the HD back in my 486 and turned it on... success... well, sort of..
The boot sequence continued until errors were detected on hda and it throw
me into root to do maintenance on the drive... however, when put back in my
p3 the harddrive came up with no errors...

AHA! I figured out what may be the cause of all my problems (or, it just may
be another on the list)... when I installed Lilo into the MBR it overwrote
the Drive Overlay program, therefore my BIOS isn't able to recognize the
larger partitions... So...

How would I install Lilo onto my hd in the first sector and get the Drive
overlay program to read it as it has finished loading? Certainly there are
other people out there that have drive overlays installed on there Linux
boxes... could someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance :)

The compiler is looking for these files in /usr/include. If they are not
there, then you need to install the libc development package.

Hi, all -

I am having trouble getting a disk array working properly. The disk array
consists of four Seagate ST41800N's. It is hanging off a Symbios Logic 53C825
conroller (server is a dual Ppro
running Mandrake 7.1). The controller sees all four drives on boot.

I am unable to partition the middle two drives, for some reason. The
error message I get is:

                                                          Device contains
neither a valid DOS partition table, nor Sun, SGI or OSF disklabel
Building a new DOS disklabel. Changes will remain in memory only, until
you decide to write them. After that, of course, the previous content
won't be recoverable. Segmentation fault (core dumped)

The drives all have unique addresses (0,1,2 and 5, respectively - 1 and 2
are the bad boys. The controller is 7. No other SCSI devices.). The
last drive in the chain is terminated, of course.

Has anyone seen this problem? I d/l'd the manual off the Seagate site,
but nothing suggests itself.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

If it is convenient, email will reach me faster.

TIA -

jh

I got also the same problem but for Dell Dimension XPS T500 box. Most
likely your sound card is integrated into the motherboard and for most
card of thses types linux won't support. Big companys like Dell they
wnat to save money on shipping cheap stuff in their machines like
Winmodem which won't work under linux too. Any way you will problly be
able to make it work if you look at www.opensound.com. All the luck
