I have a Win4Lin CD that I purchased but have decided not to use it. Works
great, I installed it with Windows 98 and all applications I tried ran fine.
If you interested in purchasing it please email me with an offer. Retail is
$49.95 but I will take substantially less (as in around $20).

Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 09:03:44 -0500
Hi all -
I'm running RedHat 6.2.1. After an unremarkable reboot, I lost
access to the console. It prints the login prompt on the screen, but the
keyboard and mouse are non-responsive. I can login via the network.
I can also use the console if I remotely take the system into single user
mode. So, that tells me the hardware works, and that a getty is started
for the console when it goes to multiuser (because a login prompt is
printed). Any thoughts? I'm stumped. I've tried run level 3 and 5.
Thanks in advance!

It's for people like me that want all the damn desktop icons
removed, but you'll find you can also just remove some. It's as
simple as an edit to your ~/.kde/share/config/kfmrc file. In
Mandrake 7.1 I found that step 4) is unnecessary.

Hi Laura,
I know just how you feel. I, too, am just getting into Linux and it is far
from intuitive. More and more I get the feeling that the graphical
interface is just a pretence and you really have to learn the underlying
Unix to make decent progress. As for stability, my Red Hat Linux hung 3 or
4 times while I was configuring it (or trying to <g>) and I was forced to
reinstall that number of times. I'll go a little further, but not much...

Subject: What are my options on booting a two disk PC
Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 14:16:14 GMT
i have Linux (SuSe 6.3) installed on a separate 2GB disk. my first disk
has win98. the system normally boots into win98 (mbr on master config),
but if i want to run linux, i simply insert the boot diskette into the
floppy drive.
i have installed boot magic by Powerquest, followed their directions,
but to no avail. i simply don't know why it doesn't work. of course, i
could use LILO, but i don't understand the instructions in my manual
pertaining to win98 as the default, in particular, the "table" entry. i
had LILO installed, but have cleared my mbr since, because it only
booted up into linux.
i've also read about loadlin.exe and have seen suggestions about setting
up my config.sys and autoex files, but am unsure about trying this out.
what is my best approach to being able to have a dual-boot system with
my two hard disks?
thank you all

I've installed Corel Linux from the boot CD onto a 1gig HD and everything
goes fine, however when it reboots there a scrolling screen of numbers. Very
strange, all I see is 0's and 1's scrolling down the screen.
What's going on, I've tried installing it twice with the same result.

You're wrong. Check http://www.linmodems.org/ for the latest on
winmodems under Linux. Also check http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html
for more information on winmodems and Linux.
FWIW, the winmodem in my Dell Latitude LS works fine under Linux.

libttf is part of freetype;
If you're using rpm, bookamrk this site:
rpmfind.net
If you ever get this error again, find the rpm you're installing,
and view it's page

Change your system's runlevel to 3 (it's 5 now). It's in /etc/inittab
usually.
You can get to a terminal by hitting CTRL-ALT-F2. If you go to F1 you'll
see crap from X. X itself runs on VC7.

Er. From the looks of a quick search on Google, I'd say your chances are
pretty good. Here are some links for example XF86Config scripts:
http://www.debian.org/Lists-Archives/debian-user-9808/msg00811.html
http://www.debian.org/Lists-Archives/debian-user-9808/msg00792.html
http://www.sanpei.org/Laptop-X/Laptop-X/IBM_IBM_ThinkPad_760XL
Don't be put off just because they are Debian scripts - compare and
contrast them with your own and edit accordingly. The major differences
between distributions often boil down to paths to certain items, such as
fonts, so use the paths that xf86config has given you already and the
rest of the config from a working example script. Normally I wouldn't
point to sample xf86config's because for most people you need to
configure your own, but laptops are pretty standard from one 760XL to
another and the scripts are more directly interchangeable.
By the way, the Google search terms I used were
IBM 760XL xfree86
Take a look yourself :-)
Cheers,
Toby Haynes

Ahh, I actually hadn't though of that, thanks. On the good side we
don't do anything confidential here since this is an academic research
lab. However the idea of having people listening to our conversations
is, well, disconcerting.

<p>Realize that when you permit other users (local or remote) access to

How do you know, and what do you mean by "damaged"? Is it consistent?
If so, it's undameged but possibly has been changed. At any rate, check
it out after booting from a rescue diskette or the cd. If booting
from diskette you'll need a rescue root diskette as well as the rescue
boot diskette ... if your system is weirded, that is, and you're not
using a one-diskette rescue system ...
(until you start giving details, as in literal error messages and
configuration printouts, you will continue to receive only the vaguest
of replies!)

I got mine to install yesterday in text mode ('linux text'
response at boot). I still have to do xwindows, SMB (I think),
ppp, and sound. Then the usual tuning. I was told the graphic
version wouldn't install right unless I had >= 64M RAM. Possibly
related to your problem? Try the text version of install.
