>/dev/hda13 /var

To eliminate MBR interference from that other OS, I set mine up like this:

/dev/hda1 /boot LILO (RH)
/dev/hda2 /boot LILO (Mandrake)
/dev/hda3 other OS
/dev/hda5 /
/dev/hda6 /var
/dev/hda7 swap
/dev/hda8 /
/dev/hda9 /var

Then I simply point each LILO at the other LILO as other, like you would
for that other OS, and can make any of the first 3 partitions the active
boot partition with Linux or Win fdisk. This allows me to totally remove
or replace a distro without any boot problems.

Last time I read the lilo docs, LILO could only be put on a primary or
extended partition, not a logical partition. So it could be put it on
/dev/hda2, but not /dev/hda10. Maybe that changed???

Since I don't know if it is possible for LILO to work at hda10, I would
suggest mounting hda10 on RH (maybe /mnt/sboot) and then set it up just
like another vmlinuz on RH except point it to /mnt/sboot/boot/vmlinuz.
It does not matter that it is not mounted at that location when you boot,
LILO seems to keep track of the actual physical location.

However, I cannot say if this would work if vmlinuz is past cyl 1024
unless you have a new LILO that supports that (I don't which is another
reason for my /boot partitions at the bottom of my 27.3GB drive).

I played around with one of the earlier UMSDOS ZipSlack versions about a
year ago and built it up to purt near a full system. Enjoyed it and
learned a whole bunch in the process.

I figured out how to get Mandrake to go on the way I wanted it in a text
mode install without all the bells and whistles and then went straight
to the upgrade web site and got rid of all the pre stuff it shipped
with, you know, like KDE 1.9 called KDE 2 and such and got a real
version of XFree86 4.0.1 on it. Gotta compliment them on that. 56K
connection and it only took me about three and a half hours to upgrade
the whole damn thing. Got rid of about 95% of all the glitches I found
in the first couple of days I was evaluating it.

if the account is only a pop account they won't have access to a
terminal login as u only gave them pop3 login capability.

if u can, test an account by configuring your mail client to use one of
the user's accounts and i bet it will login. But it won't let them
login through telnet b/c that's not the permission u gave them.

But what kind of performance do you get out of Netscape 6? On RedHat

Thanks a lot to all who replied so quickly. I am thinking
of growing the FAT32 extended partion to house all Linux logical
partition except swap. I'll use Linux fdisk to add another
primary partition for swap, and add logical partitions to the
extended partition.

Thus I'll have: primary Win98 partition, primary swap partition
for Linux, and one big extended partition that will hold my
logical drives in Win98 and my logical Linux partitions
(/, /home, /usr, etc.). So I'll have two primary and one
extended partitions.

Will this work? Can Windows logical drives and Linux logical
partitions coexist in one big extended partiton?

        Hi guys,

Originally, I used to have a CMI8330 HOWTO from a Slackware 2.1 setup
that included a small C program to tweak the chip into working. I had it
sloppily hacked into RH6.2's bootup scripts and it worked fairly well. I
have the new HOWTO now that doesn't require the small C program, but it's
written for RH6.1 and their /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit file. Has anyone tried
this with Debian Potato, or at least know RH6.1's order of events for
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit? I'd like to insert the following in Debian Potato
without violating any of the policies:

Subject: buffercache kills server
Date: Fri, 8 Dec 2000 22:03:13 -0800

        Hi everyone,
I'm having trouble limiting the buffercache on our server. It's
got 1GB of ram and I'm trying to get an Oracle 8.1.6 database to work well
on it. Here is the output of free on bootup:

                  total used free shared buffers
cached
MEM: 1036168 130376 905792 91032 10048 57428
-/+ buffers/cache: 62900 973268
swap: 540104 0 530104

after using the server for a while here is the output of free:

                  total used free shared
buffers cached
MEM: 1036168 1026736 9432 191336 100104 439332
-/+ buffers/cache: 487300 548868
swap: 530104 660 529444

It seems like the buffercache is eating up way too much of our memory.
Oracle already has about 400MB for SGA and buffers. The Database runs
horribly slow. After a reboot it's fast and gradually gets slower as the
Buffers increase. I tried using the following script in the rc.d:

echo "2 15 15" >/proc/sys/vm/pagecache
echo "2 10 15" >/proc/sys/vm/buffercache

this gave me the following output for free after using the system a
while:

                  total used free shared buffers
cached
MEM: 1036168 993920 42248 29368 14584 937104
-/+ buffers/cache: 42232 993936
swap: 530104 22364 507740

This seems even worse so I removed the script from
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d
As far as I can tell I need to learn how to properly tune the buffer/cache,
the 937104 showing up there never got released. Any input on solutions to
this is greatly appreciated.

It's not linux, it's the RH install. I have not had any of the RH 6.x
distros to install on my laptop with an external pcmcia cdrom, RH 5.2
installed on the same hardware with no problems. I got around it by
creating a DOS partition big enough to hold the RH directory, copied the
files from the cd. Then during the install selected to install from hard
drive.

Unless you specify the exact error message Adam, nobody can tell you what is

All of the hardware appears to be functioning well by the way.

It would appear that some process is issuing a command that identifies
or reads partition tables . . .

. . . of which the hdh (sda) device (atapi zip drive) does not like
the command and ide-scsi is reporting it.

Any ideas how to figure out or does anybody know what program is doing
the Partition check?

Run the kdmconfig program and use it to change the logo. Otherwise, you
can edit the kdmrc file (/opt/kde/share/config/kdmrc on my system) and
change the "LogoPixmap" entry to change the logo.

There are about 4 different versions of this card, using at least 2 different
chipsets. I had an early one with the es1370 chip, it worked perfectly (its in
my 11 year-olds comp now, and again works perfectly for him, in Linux and
winblows)

So have I, transfer rates on my separate disks are 19.5mb/s and 23mb/s, on my
RAID 0 striped arrays it is 38mb/s, thats a little more than 30%.
