It might depend upon which kernel you're running. I know when I went
from 2.2.12-20 to 2.2.16 the layout of xconfig (from make xconfig) had
changed slightly.

Basically, when doing the configure (I'm assuming with 'make xconfig')
then (in my 2.2.16) there's a 'filesystem' section, in there you can
choose MSDOS and vfat fs. IIRC (I just checked and forgot again already)
if you modularize msdos fs support then you can only have vfat support
modularized (if you compile msdos support in then you can have vfat
support compiled into the kernel), then again you can go in there and
have a field-day adding support for this and that fs and the modules
will just sit on your system waiting for their day of action 8-)

Guy

As for more detailed guidelines on compiling kernels I'm not going to go
into that here. You're best of reading the readily available
documentation (and being cautious if it's your first time!). Hell, be
cautious if it's your nth time - it's your machines guts your performing
surgery on. Hmmm, or maybe it's more like your machine's heart ..

Shaan (John?),

do you mean redhat 6.2?
Could you give a little more detail about what stage you're at in the install
process when you hit the next key and the exact message that comes up.

Please appreciate that no-one else has any idea what exactly is happening or
what system you have unless you tell us so when posting with a problem try and
include as much of what you think is relevant information as you can.

Also, for redhat specific questions it might be worth checking out one of the
redhat ngs (e.g. redhat.config or redhat.general - although, admittedly, they
don't appear so much to do with install issues). It might also be worth
checking out www.redhat.com (or support.redhat.com).

Regards, Guy.

Andy,

I've been there also! If your system has tried to go into X after you've
changed the mouse setting and fails (with a flash every second or so);
I found that ctrl-alt-fn does *not* work. The *only* thing that works is a
ctrl-alt-del to reboot (kinda a creepy reminder of MS days but at least
when you do it in this case you get a reasonably graceful shutdown before
reboot!).
In RedHat: 'linux 3' at the lilo prompt will not start X and you can make X
config changes then.

If you're changing mouse settings then /usr/sbin/mouseconfig might be a
safer idea than manually editing XF86Config. It even has a go at detecting
your mouse.

Regards, Guy.

Subject: Re: Newsgroup offline reading... still a newbie!
Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 22:14:52 GMT

I've the same basic problem: limited access time on the internet.

The trick to it for me was using leafnode. This is a local news server
(it reads postings from your internet news server, and keeps them on your
local computer). I've been using pan, but just now tried configuring
netscape to read from leafnode, and it worked just fine. Leafnode was
-very- simple to configure for a newbie like me. Plus it only reads
postings from newsgroups I've subscribed to. When I investigate new
groups, I simply select my internet news server directly, and if I want
to subscribe, switch to localhost and subscribe.

How I configured:

In /etc/leafnode/config:
        entered my internet news server
        entered my news server username
        entered my password

ran fetchnews -vvv as root (this got the list of newsgroups)

In netscape:
        Edit->Preferences->Mail & Newsgroups->Newsgroups Servers

Add -> entered localhost as server
119 as port, and made it the default.
you don't need a password for your own
                                machine :)

In Communicator, right clicked localhost, selected subscribe to
        newsgroups, and subscribed.

leafnode enters a placeholder; next time you run fetchnews, it
will get all the headers and bodies available for your
        subscribed groups.

This works great for me. The only problem with this is if you
unsubscribe, leafnode will still fetch the newsgroup for a few
days. If you have apache with php3 support, leafwa makes it easy
to have leafnode stop fetching.

In Redhat, /etc/rc.d/rc.local is a good spot.

Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 22:30:04 GMT

I partitioned my HD for Windows and Linux. installed boot magic.
Everything, Linux and Windows, worked fine. (both OS booted)
Quit using linus because of difficulties. About 4 months of inactivity on
linux side. Went to boot it to start using it again and will not boot.
I choose linux on the bootmagic screen---then i get the prompt stating,
"Preparing to load Linux"----it does nothing else! Have to hit cont-alt-
del to get out of it. Windows still runs fine. Dont want to re-install,
any help would be greatly appreciated. Looked at the partition info in
windows (where Partition magic is installed) All 3 partitions are still
there and have no errors using the PM tool. help!

Thanks--------J

check out www.linhardware.com for a searchable database of supported hardware. I
wouldn't dump this system just yet.

The modem problem is most likely dur to the fact that most laptops these
days use winmodems. Don't know about the usb error however. Find out what
the modem model is and check out if it is a winmodem.

He only said that there are plenty of .asp only sources. I offered him
an alternative. Since Microsoft isn't being very forthcoming in offering
either a port of their product or the structs of their format, I'd just
as soon abandon it completely in favour of something more open.

With the number of ShoutCast sites available, I'm sure he'll find something
that suits his needs.
