<nods> Stuck them in an /etc/modutils/audio file and ran
update-modules. I have this tweaked audio config and another one for bttv,
so after parsing what update-modules did, I thought I'd keep each one in
separate files. (bttv settings are currently all commented out until I get
the audio portion online.)

This I put into /etc/init.d/bootlocal/sh and added an S99 pointer in
/etc/rcS.d Yeah, I just found out about things getting overwritten in
updates, so I think I'll do that and put it in rc.boot. (It was there
originally until I'd read the not-very-specific policy docs.) <grins>
Things seem to go well until this point. The sb.o driver tries to load
and I get device-in-use errors. midi and synth seem to load, according to
lsmod. I still can't figure out what's going wrong with these damned sb.o
settings. <grins> Probably a typo my 3:00am eyesight is missing. I also
tried running this part at different points, after isapnp and before
modutils, after modutils...things were the same except when I once tried
running it before isapnp. <laughs> Oh well. Thanks for the info. At
least now I know I'm on the right track and closing in on the problem.

You need to set up /etc/fstab to allow a normal user to mount disks/cdrom.
A quick look at mine shows this

/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0

Note also that a normal user does not use
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
the simply do
mount /mnt/cdrom.
The same with umount.
umount /mnt/cdrom.
The mount application will not let a normal user select where it wants to
mount the device.

Hope this helps

Attempting to install Mandrake on a Compaq Proliant 1500. System is
Dual P-166, 64 Meg Ram, has the Compaq Raid Controller, SMARTRaid
installed, and an Adaptec 1540 SCSI Controller hooked to the CD.
Trouble is, the system upon install can see only ONE, either the
SCSI Card, (the adaptec), or the RAID controller.
The system currently is running UnixWare 2.1.3, with no problems,
but I would really like to upgrade to Mandrake.
Any help at all? Or should I stick with UnixWare?
    Thanks!

I ran into a Linux problem and was hoping someone could help. Im sure its
something simple, but Linux tends to not be very intuitive.

I had a bit of a problem with PVM and in the middle of trying various
things, I added a path to my .bashrc file. Well, that was a big mistake.
The .bashrc file belongs to the /root directory, hence when I log in as
'root', nothing works. I mean nothing, like "ls", "emacs", "vi", "cp". How
can I get to that file and edit it again to remove the problem causing line?
I can log on as a user but user dont have permission to alter any files in
"root".

I tried booting to a Linux "boot disk" and after several minutes of loading,
I got several error messages, one of which said "Kernel panic".

Any help, again, would be appreciated.

Thanks

Log in again as a regular user then do a
su root then

/bin/mv /root/.bashrc /root/.bashrc_bad

Else get to the lilo prompt and enter
linux 1 or
linux single
and try the /bin/mv again.

This means that it is initialised (formatted) to FAT file system.
Linux can be installed on such but will suffer a performance degradation.
(Slackware includes ZipSlak and BigSlak which are fully functional distributions
in Zip file format to be unzipped on FAT partitions).
But to get full advantage of the OS install it on "Linux native" ext2fs file
system.
This means deleting from disk FAT partitions to make pristine HD for new
partitioning.
Enjoy.

You WILL need to remove your current M$ partition(s) one way or
another. Newer distros may or may not try to repartition the drive,
thinking you might want a dual-boot setup. Removing them now with DOS's
fdisk will at least save you an extra step during a new and possibly
confusing installation. Linux can't run on M$ partitions. Go for it...

Okay, one or some of you youngsters give an old man a hand here. I may
be overlooking it, but so far in all the extensive documentation on
XFree86 4.0.1(that's yet to be published) I'm either overlooking
something or not reading it right. So far, with RH 6.1, Deb Potato, and
now Mandrake 7.2, using both KDE 1.1.2 and KDE 2, each time I've
upgraded to the new XF86, it's killed my DPMS in KDE. I've tried every
conceivable combination of the xset command and switches to no avail.
Both with the 2.xx series kernels and with 2.4.0-test series from about
5 to 11 also.

I can do an (xset dpms force off) and shut the monitor down into green
mode okay, but for the life of me, I can't get it to work automagically
with enabling it through KDE.

What am I not doing or doing wrong?

Try a 'locate config | grep "X" | grep "bin" | less' and see if the
puppy is missing. I know RH versions 5.2 thru 6.2 have had it. Give us
more info about your monitor and vid-card, too. You did remember the

leads you into XF86Config or Xconfigurator. I'm using Debian now.

if your linux is still functional fdisk from linux
or just go back to your installation cd and delete the linux partitions from
there...and exit

then you can do fdisk from dos and recreate...

btw: although if you are careful doing fdisk is generally safe...
i'd back all your data anyway...just in case...

linux fdisk and i once had a minor argument about which partiton was what...
at least i got to test out my backup software that day :)

Can you login under your normal-use account and 'su' to root? Also,
other shells will often create a .profile on first use, allowing you to
access/edit .bashrc From root, you can try:

        /bin/sh
        /bin/ksh
        /bin/zsh

Without a path, you'll just have to re-enter it right there at the
prompt, or supply the full pathname of the programs you normally run:

        PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
                -or-
        /bin/cp <file1> <file2>
