I found Askey modems to suck. Good luck!

Well,
there is a script called /etc/lilo.conf

This script contains all appropriate info for a well-working dual boot.

To generate this file, you can either:
- do it by hand.... tricky and touchy but at least you know what you are
doing
- with linuxconf (/sbin/linuxconf)

You will be able to decide what to load and how.
use linuxconf to start with.

Have Fun!

Look in the /root directory for a .xintrc or
.Xclients file and rename that to something else
and restart X and you should get GNOME back.

Try at LILO:
linux 1

If it works, mount your distro CD and reinstall the packages that contains
login. I can't say for sure which one it is.

With RH/Mandrake/.. you can type the command:
rpm -Uvh --force <package.rpm>

See ya

hi
im having problems installing rhide for linux...
i run the make file with 'make -f INSTALL.MAK $*' like the readme says
yet, it halts half way through compilation.. with an error 2 - no rule to
make target rhgdhuti ... i think, and i dont know what to do.
it also says to run it from the script, INSTALL.LINUX but it does not work
either, it says cant find directory's 'bin' 'share' and a few others,
i think i have to put the files in to usr/local, but the tar extracts it
into
/%wherever tar is%/ rhide-1.4.7 , so i have tried extracting that into the
base directory / and into usr/local and it wont work...
im boggled by what to do... any help would be appreciated.

Subject: Partition suggestions? How to realloc?
Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 04:30:11 GMT

I have a young computer with a 30GB disc on which I installed
Win98 and Caldera Linux. At the time, I did the best I could choosing
the partitioning, but I think now that I want to redo it and should
ask for advice. The problem is that my current setup fills the disk.
I would like to have room to play with other distros or linux utils/apps
safely (like Xf86 4.0, Gnome ...) I can't be the only one ... what do
others do? Where does swap belong? Can I install and boot a second
linux distro from past the 1024 cyl limit using grub within the 1024
limit or must its root be within 1024? Currently I have partitions
for Win98, swap, /, /usr, /var, /home, /tmp. Details are below. Should
I have an /etc partition? What about /usr/local? I thought it was wise
to have /home, /tmp near the end of the disk to make changes easy...
Can different distros share some partitions (like /home, /tmp?).

How can I resize the partitions nondestructively? I saw a new release
of GNU parted and read the docs ... I guess it can work, but it can
be more complicated than I thought. Is Partition Magic worth buying?
Will the DiskDrake on my free Mandrake CD do the job? BTW, what is
the maximum number of partitions (primary + logical?) Thanks! My
current setup is below.

Consider submitting a bug report to the helix guys
for the updater. Bug-buddy is a program that will
step you through the process. Just send one for
the helix updater and mention the fact that gnorpm
doesn't work also.

Try setting the bios hardware clock to local time, then tell linux to
set it to UTC and that you are in Phnom Penh. Don't try to help the
system? BTW aren't you a few hours west of the international dateline?

Simon,
Take a look at this web site. I am pretty new at this Linux stuff myself
and have been playing around with this stuff at work. (Nice to have lots of
toys to learn on and get paid to do it!).

http://www.maximumlinux.com/howtos/howto/2000_04_15/apache.html

I followed it step by step and connected to it and it worked! It was just
on our internal intranet, but that is what I needed to do.

Good luck!

I think that's a security feature. You should _never_ disable root's
password. Deal with the login procedure, or you may have "problems"
later.

If this is a true Creative Labs Sound Blaster, I would first check their
site, they have expressed support for Linux and I have downloaded some
drivers (in the past) for their video cards from them for the x-server.
When in Redhat as root, did you try the 'sndconfig' utility? I find
that sndconfig does a pretty good job of getting the sound system
working.

The rpm for it should be on the CD or in the downloaded files in the
/RedHat/RPMS directory. You can install it with:

rpm -Uvh /path/to/filename.i386.rpm

Hi all,

I'm using RedHat 6.1 with kernel 2.2.14-12 smp on a ASUS P2B-DS board and
when I try to umount an existing partition the process hangs. <Ctrl> C or
even kill -9 doesn't work.
The strange thing is however that the cpu load goes to 1.00
When I try to mount a new disk I've exactly the same problem, and the load
goed to 2.00 (with an idle 99.2% .....?!?) so every time when I do a mount
or umount the load increases with 1.00
The only thing I can do is the do a reboot -f because else the system want
to unmount the partitions and keeps hanging.
The mounting of the existing partitions are good mounted during the boot,
only unmounting and new disks mounting goes wrong.
(all installed packages are up2date!)

Has anybody some experience with this behavior?

Thankz.

point taken, but I was talking about winmodems not linmodems

read below question 2 from the links that you provided to me

Winmodem Mini-FAQ
1. If Winmodems are not really modems, why do manufacturers make them?
Two reasons: Most people don't know the difference; and floppy disks
are cheaper than hardware chips. A winmodem lacks parts found in
regular modems-- these parts are "emulated" by software running on your
CPU.
2. Oops, I bought a Winmodem. Will it work with Linux?
Probably not. A Winmodem requires software to emulate the hardware
missing from the modem card. For most winmodems, this software is only
available for Microsoft Windows.

If it's like 6.2, you can cancel out of the Driver Disk dialog and continue. At
least with 6.2, the Initio cards are supported with the stock kernel.

Hallo !

Here are the ldd results:
====================
tower:/opt/eagle/bin # ldd ./eagle
/usr/bin/ldd: ./eagle: No such file or directory
====================
Finally solved the problem:
It needs the old glibc-5 libraries to run ...

But could someone tell me, why ld could not figure out this problem ?

Thanx,

Matt

When you run configure, somewhere near the end of its output should be
"writing Makefile". If it isn't there, see what error messages you have
(if you're on the console, press shift-PGUP/PGDN to scroll) and try to
correct things (install libraries, etc).

Cheers,
Kevin

Linux is not slow, X is. X was not designed to be a desktop GUI, try
playing around with remote displays and you'll see what I mean. That's
where the real power of X lies.
