I'd have thought the swap file was a bit on the large size if you've got
40Mb, not that it matters really. I'd prefer to keep all your DOS
partitions as primary and stick all your ext2 partitions under the
extended 'cos I've seen Windoze doing some pretty stupid things with
extended partitions.

This is the media format software developer kit, of course a
Windows Executable. But it should provide adequate descriptions

During the installation of Mandrake, I hope you created a boot disk during the
last part of the installation.
At the lilo prompt of your boot disk
lilo: linux single
bash# /sbin/lilo
bash# reboot

Hopefully your mandrake will come back.
If your mandrake filesystem is damaged when coming, it should prompt you do a
file system check.
# fsck /dev/hda4
Hopefully your mandrake will come back.

Often it (usually spelled "Makefile") is generated by the configure script.
It *must* be in the current directory (unless "make" is invoked with the

against:

lib/modules/2.0.38/scsi/ppa.o symbol for ppa_base not found

Two hours of searching hither and yon has left me none the wiser.

What does this mean, and how do I fix it?

It's PII box, and has only one parallel port.

You will need one partition for windows and a second one for linux but DO
NOT use fdisk...or you will loose windows.
use either the utility fips which usually comes with Linux (read the
documentation well) or use Partition Magic

What format? Microsoft's .ASF format? From what I'd understood, they hadn't

However the system seems to be subtracting 7 rather than adding 7 to the UTC

Wed Jul 19 02:21:46 GMT+7 2000
[root@lion8 david]# date -u
Wed Jul 19 09:21:51 UTC 2000

And the hardware clock IS set to actual GMT/UTC
[root@lion8 david]# /sbin/hwclock
Wed Jul 19 02:26:20 2000 -0.483259 seconds

Any ideas..

Use a rescue disk or in the worse case, try any install disk but pass
the argument 'root=/dev/hd?' in lilo with the appropriate drive

Use the boot disk you made during the installation of linux.

Or you can use the installation boot disk and at the prompt enter:

tulip.o: unresolved symbol pci_drv_register

I had neglected to first load the pci-scan module, upon which the tulip

Rebooting my system causes it to hang at linux post. Specifically, the
system hangs at this point:

Checking filesystems
/dev/hdf1 has reached maximal mount count, check forced.
/dev/hde8 has reached maximal mount count, check forced.
/dev/hde6 has reached maximal mount count, check forced.
/dev/hde5 has reached maximal mount count, check forced.
/dev/hde7 has reached maximal mount count, check forced.
/dev/hdf1: |====                                         |  7.5%

I hear that pleasant grinding filesystem check / mount up until the 7.5%
mark. At that point the hard drive light is still on, but the grinding
noises have stopped and there is no audible hard drive activity.

I'm running Redhat 6.2, with the linux 2.2.16 kernel, using Hedrick's
latest IDE patch for that kernel (to enable linux to recognize and boot
off of UDMA/66 hard drives).

Help is greatly appreciated.

That is just the equivalent of the Microsoft 'scandisk' running
periodically on Windows systems. This will be automatically done on
bootup after the filesystem have been mounted for a certain number of
times of for a certain period of time. The times are customizable
using the tune2fs utility. You can also stop it from doing this by
making the last column of numbers in your /etc/fstab be zero in each
filesystem you don't want it to happen.

What worries me is the fact that, generally, I should expect that the
progress bar for my hdf1 partition to grow at a somewhat regular rate.
Unfortunately, it's been 30 minutes and the progress bar is still stuck
at 7.5% complete. It *is* a 30 Gb partition, so I expect that things
will take a while, but I also expect that the utlitity's progress to be
consistent. That's what's freaking me out at the moment.
