One other note, the LILO in RH 6.1 needs the kernel to be located below
the 1024 cyl point and even a tranlated 10G drive is beyond that at the
end. So you should make a 16 meg (1 cyl) /boot partition first and put
LILO there, and then either use your boot loader to boot that partition to
boot Linux or mark that as the active boot partition to boot anything
using LILO. That way you don't have to worry about any Windows or virus
programs stepping on the MBR.

The rest of Linux, including logical / and swap partitions can go in an
extended partiton after the /boot partition.

Unlike RedHat which allows you to insert the CD when it asks where you
want to install from, Mandrake needs to have the CD already in the drive
when the kernel boots. Either insert it before shutting down to boot the
install, or insert it quickly at the boot prompt. Otherwise if the kernel
does not find the Mandrake CD in cdroms it probes, it will not let you try
that cdrom again.

Normally for RedHat you can use the autoboot.bat on the CD to boot from
DOS for installation, and it will figure out your cdrom, but autoboot.bat
does not work for Mandrake, even with a standard atapi cdrom.

And my boot floppy was corrupted so I had to make a boot floppy before I
could boot that.

Personally, I think requiring the CD to be already in the drive is a bug,
since I have not seen it explained anywhere, and only an experienced Linux
user would know how to figure out what the problem was from the error log
in another vt.

Hi folks!

I really managed to get my EPSON Stylus Color working under Linux (SuSE
6.4). ,-)

Now I want to have access to it using Win95/98 boxes. It's clear I need
SaMBa and TCP/IP for Win, which is basically working already for file
access in my network.

There are many doc's about how to get a printer shared on a linux box,
but I didn't find anything about how to connect to it from a Windows
based computer yet. :(

If anyone would like to help me, please contact me via email 'cause
it's obviously you'll need at least my /etc/printcap and /etc/smb.conf
(which would cause unneccessary traffic if posted to the public) to
give advice.

Hi All!

Anyone knows how to get this printer working properly?

Basically, it runs, configured via SuSE YasT.

But color mixing is awful, seems like the black ink cartridge isn't
used for anything which is coloured. The gray gradient is mixed of CMY,
but no real black appears despite of text which is formatted in black.

And whatever setup I choose, there is no optimized mixing and error
diffusion like I get under Win9x. Printing is always done in regulary
grid mode which reminds on newspapers. :(

Besides, there are no setup options for bidirectional printing or
micro-weaving as in the Windows printer driver. Even installing a PPD
file for Star Office from Adobe's Web site didn't help it -- neither
for Star Office itself nor globally. I can choose the original Stylus
Color printer and set the resolution from 180 to 720 dpi, however,
there's no choice for the above mentioned options nor paper settings.

Any ideas?

Don't say I'll have to write my own apsfilter... ,-)

REmove sendmail from your system.

THen install postfix, you can find it on www.rpmfind.net if you
are using redhat.

read the doco that comes with postfix, it will tell you how
to do what you want to do.

for users to get the mail, you need to have pop or imap.

There are various pop servers out there, all with one security problem
or another. You also need a way for users from the various companies
to get their mail.

Go to www.freshmeat.net and search for (of all things) "teapot" which
is a decent popper that's very configurable.

Another way is to use the Cyrus system. It's an all in one integrated
one and gets good recommendation. search freshmeat for Cyrus.

If you are setting up mail, then be prepared to do some reading and
expect to have to do a bit of work. Mail is easy to get wrong and if
you are doing it for a company and get it wrong cos you were lazy,
then you can cost them a lot of money.

Coresave is removed again, but the lilo boot menu doesn't show up

Look here, these drivers work great on my 740 stylus.
http://dutera.et.tudelft.nl/~haver/linux/epson.html
If that's not what you want, use google and search for "linux epson",
there's a ton of stuff that has been done for these printers. Also, the
new CUPS, I am told by others, does great work with Epsons, using it's own
drivers.
Hope some of this helps, my 740 works better under linux than it ever did
under windows.

Do you have SAMBA running in the Linux computer?

If you want the Windows computers to see files in the Linux computer, you
have to set up smb.conf and the start the samba daemons smbd and nmbd. There
may be a "samba start" script you can use to do this. BUT you WILL have to
set up smb.conf and user ids and passwords in the Linux machine that match
the ones for your Windows machines.

You can use the Linux command smbclient to check for available resources like
printers on the Windows machines. You will also have to set up smb.conf to
use this command as there is information that smbclient reads from it.

Summary : Retrieves news from a remote NNTP news server.
Description :
Suck retrieves news from a remote NNTP news server and downloads it to
a client machine without help from the remote server. You will need
to have read permission on the remote news server. Suck is designed
for a small, partial news feed (in other words, it is NOT designed to
feed 10,000 groups and three gigabytes of articles a day).

If nfs is available, export and mount the CD. On the second machine, nfs
mount as usual.

To help you see what happened:
you downloaded a 600Mb file from the Net and with your favorite cd-burner
software, you copied this unique file onto the CD. As a result, when you go
to your CD-rom drive, you see something like:

Mandrake7.1a.iso 600Mb

Well, this is wrong! Actually I did the same error once.... :)
Don't dispose of this CD.... IT IS STILL useable. (Ex: once your linux is
running, you can do this procedure to "read" this file:

# mount /mnt/cdrom
# cd /mnt/cdrom
# ls
Mandrake7.1a.iso
# mkdir /mnt/disk
# mount -t iso9660 /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake7.1a.iso /mnt/disk -o loop
# cd /mnt/disk
# ls
README Mandrake Index.html docs lnx4dos (etc)

So it is still totally useable ONCE your linux is ready....
Your need either a friend with a CD-Burner + Linux OR a Windows Software
that know to deal with iso images (I know 2: Easy CD Creator and Nero)
Use one or the other solution to burn your Iso image. In both case, you can
use your CD-with-1-iso-file as a media to use one or the other solution.

Ok,

Have Fun
Salut
Aurelien
