Hello,
Has anyone else had the problem where the gdm package doesn't work for
all users on a given system? I can log in as root and one other user
with no difficulty. However, I have not been able to log in under any
other account. Even after setting up a brand new account.

Subject: Sawfish Bugs or Configuration Problems?
Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 17:24:26 GMT
Hello Everyone,
I must have done something to the Sawfish environment, because I
didn't always have these irritating bugs, but I can't get rid of them.
First, I can't seem to resize most of my windows. I used to be able to,
but now when I click on the edge of the screen and drag it all I get is
the present size of the window. It doesn't change sizes which is really
annoying.
Possibly related to this (this might have something to do with focus
and shadow, but these terms aren't explained in Sawfish, so who knows
what I've adjusted), When I open a new window in Netscape, it appears up
on top, I can paste into it, I can move it, however, that isn't the
screen which accepts the keyboard input. So when when I reply to a new
message, it pops up in front of the screen, but before I click on the
panel icon on the bottom, I when I type it affects the screen below it
(the list of all my messages) and not the message that is on top and
that I want to be editing.
Are there any good guides to setting up Sawfish?
Thanks! I'm running RedHat 6.2 & Helix Gnome.

Subject: Annoying Netscape Problem in Red Hat 6.2/Gnome Environment
Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 17:29:11 GMT
Hello,
Has anyone figured out how to get the address book working in Netscape
4.73, with Red Hat 6.2. It was working for me fine under Caldera, but
I've found the lack of this feature extremely annoying. Unfortunately I
haven't found a fix or an easy way to migrate to another email program.
Would like to use either Mozilla M16 or Netscape 6, but both of them run
noticably slower than my current version of Netscape. Even if they
don't have Netscape 4.73's leaky memory problem..
I'm also having trouble with the windows that appear on the top actually
being the active windows. For some reason the active window isn't the
one on the top of the screen or the one that just poped up. To enter in
this message for example, I needed to go to the navigation bar and
select the message that is on top, before it will allow me to type into
it. If I just start typing in it starts adjusting the window with my
inbox (or which ever one happens to be open behind the new message).
I'm running RedHat 6.2, Helix Gnome and Sawfish.
Thanks!
Mike

No, the reference guide your refering to is pretty paltry. You want Red Hat
Linux Bible by Christopher Negus published by IDG books. Chapter 16 is of
interest to you.
The book is available at Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com

The Guillemot 3D Prophet seems to be based on an nVidia GeForce2 MX. Go to
www.nvidia.com and look for the Linux drivers available under the "Support

TNT Ultra, GeForce, and Quadro chipsets".

(Caldera OpenLinux eServer 2.4, kde.)
1) I'm looking to set up SMTP/POP on a Linux box for multiple e-mail
accounts. The SMTP server does not allow relaying by default, which is a
smart thing, but I'd still like to be able to send messages through it with
a username/password. How do I allow this?
2) I couldn't send mail from the box until I changed its name to only the
domain name (orion2k.com). However, the setup asked for the fully qualified
name, i.e. mars.orion2k.com. (Obviously, I'm trying to name the machine
mars.) The recipient server didn't like the fact that it was receiving mail
from a host name that doesn't exist (mars.orion2k.com), but it worked when I
made the change.
The machine is likely to be the only one in the domain for some time, and
maybe forever. But how would I set it up so it could have a name and still
be able to send mail out? I assume there's a switch somewhere which says how
sendmail should report the servername...
This brings me, I guess, to question 2a) how would I have multiple machines
in the same domain? Would I have to have my DSL provider add entries to its
name server, or can I do that somehow on my own and have it propagate?
I'm sure these are pretty basic questions, and if I only knew where to look,
I'd gladly search out the answers on my own. A pointer to one or more
suitable FAQ/HOWTO documents would be most appreciated!
Thanks -

Another helpful hint is that whenever I want to see what product
and related rpm files are installed, I just (for example, to see what
apache-related files are installed):
rpm -qa | grep apache
The "rpm -qa" lists all installed packages. The grep just filters
for packages with apache in the name.
I do this all the time. I wish I had a better memory (must be using
the old 80ns stuff).

I tried to boot from the floppy, and a bunch of nonsense came
up on the screen. I then removed the floppy and booted normally
only to find that X windows wouldn't start! It now gives the message:
_FontTransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
failed to set default font path 'unix/:-1'
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
Everything else on the system works FINE! What could be the problem
here? I've already tried reloading XF86Config that I know works.
One final note: After the boot disk failed and X did this, I feared
for the safety of my /boot/vmlinuz. I did an rdev /boot/vmlinuz and
it reported the WRONG root filesystem (sdd2 or something like that).
I promptly did rdev /boot/vmlinuz /dev/hda5, my real root FS.

We'll need to know what graf card you are using and the

you are using. Then you'll have to reconfigure X. Oh,
and while you're at it, please post the specs of your

Yes there are XFree86 font rpms. That sounds like the problem. Just look
on the CD, or wherever you installed from. You will have to use the
'--force' option to reinstall.
[hal@feenix hal]$ rpm -qa | grep XFr
XFree86-75dpi-fonts-3.3.6-20
XFree86-100dpi-fonts-3.3.6-20
[...]
(RH6.2)
The passwd entry is correct, BTW.
