Edit the entries for both the cd-rom drive and the floppy drive in the
file /etc/fstab. They should contain the option "user" in the list of
options. This will allow any user to mount them, but only the user who
mounted the device (and root) can unmount them. The manual pages "man
mount" and "man fstab" contain more info.
You need to mount a device before you can acces it. "mount /mnt/cdrom"
or "mount /dev/cdrom" are equivalent.
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>

Hi all,
I'm having a strange problem in Mandrake 7.2...
I have a SB AWE 64 card, but I'm not getting any sound; nothing about
sound is loading in the bootup.
artsd is disabled, says "cannot find /dev/(sound card device name)"
"sndconfig" apparently does not exist, and there is no loadable package
(as far as I can tell) that will
address the situation.
The sound card works fine in Windows98...
Thanks in advance.

Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 15:19:52 GMT
Don't know why, but I seem to get CD-ROM drive access being lost /
trashed from time to time.
I've checked the device list, and it's there as a supermount, but I get
an "I/O error" when trying to access it.
I've ended up having to reload the system in order to bring it back.
I've seen this happen several times with Mandrake 6.0 as well.
Can anybody tell me why a CD-ROM drive would fail under Linux, and what
can be done to -
1. Prevent the failure from occurring in the first place
2. Recover the CD from the crash / loss without having to reload the OS
3. Explain why this happens
Thanks in advance.

I have linux-2.4.4/slackware-7.2 and I have trouble using sound card
with video card (scrolling video block the music) and using
TV card and hard disk (the access to hard disk distort the tv image)!
My motherboard is ASUS A7V and the 4 interrupt PCI are so
configurated:
INTA: Sound Card (Fortemedia, Inc Xwave QS3000A [FM801]) and AGP Video Card
INTB: TV card (Brooktree Corporation Bt878) and ATA100 hard disk controller
INTC: Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139
INTD: USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. UHCI USB (rev 16)
Given that the PCI interrupt should must be shared, why have I
got this "interference" when I use the same interrupt for 2 card!

I'm preparing to install linux on my home computer and thought of
something.
At home I have a modem, while at work, I have a high-speed DSL
connection.
Now what I usually do is download all large files at work, put them on
a CD-R or a ZIP disc and take it home. However, if I download a linux
app (Netscape for linux for example) from work (using a Wndows
machine) and put it on a Windows formatted ZIP disc, will a linux
machine be able to read and use that app?

RedHat 7.0 ships with 2.96 and not 2.95.2.

Yes ofcourse. Linux has support for a very diverse list of file-systems,
including support for windows FAT32, vfat, NT-fs and more.

Mostly your hands. Put it in, fire up linux and partition the new disk
with fdisk or cfdisk. Format it with the correct tool (mke2fs or
whatever fs, you want t use).
Then put an entry in /etc/fstab and mount it. What distro do you want to
upgrade to (there are many different ones using the version number 7).

Seems like you have a faulty entry in your /etc/inittab. Look for a
line, which starts with 'c2' and comment it out (put '3' in front of
it).
Boot your system with 'linux single' to get to single user mode.

Apparently vi -e works the same as ed. I might just forget it and create a
simlink to vi emulating ed.
Annoying thing is, I get a different error each time. Once it even compiled
correctly, but I wasn't in the chrooted environment so it was build against
the wrong libraries. Never got it to work again though...

Subject: hard drive installation or upgrade

Has anyone out there ever successfully installed or upgraded their
RedHat system from a hard drive?
I have followed all instructions in accordance with the RedHat site
explaining how to do this but the install program crashes.
I have downloaded all the packages out of the RPMS directory using
several different FTP sites. I downloaded all the files from the base
directory and copied the boot.img file to a disk. It seems as soon as
the installer gets to a point to where it is going to use these files on
the hard drive, it crashes. It appears it is having a problem with one
or more of these files.
I should also include that there is one particular file out of the base
directory that I continually have had a problem with downloading from
every FTP site I have tried. The file is called stage2.img. It never
seems to ever successfully download for me. It apparently is a huge
file (some 87 MB). Has anyone ever successfully downloaded this file?
Does anyone know what it is?
Thanks for any help, advise or feedback.

Thanks Clark,
I'm not quite sure the problem is 100% related to the Yenta
driver though. Any idea why the mouse won't work if I uninstall
the PCMCIA drivers? If you stop the PCMCIA services, then
the interrupt is released. .... of course I haven't tried removing
the service on boot though.

I experienced the same a few times, but tried rebooting a lot of times.
I found starting 'expert' often made the error occur, while using 'text'
worked fine.

You could try the update boot disk on updates.redhat.com or some of the
mirrors.

While Linux is larger than Emacs,

I've found that I needed to export an environment variable, LD_ASSUME_KERNEL
to get things to work. I'm using Sun JDK 1.3.0.2
# export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL = 2.2.5
Cheers,
Scott
