Subject: 4MB laptop install / insmod trouble (newbie)
Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 09:02:09 GMT
I'm trying to install RedHat 5.1 onto a laptop with 4MB of memory. I
have followed the howto at
http://website.lineone.net/~brichardson/linux/4mb_laptops/.
I used muLinux to partition the hard drive. I mounted initrd.img off
the RedHat 5.1 installation disk as a loop file system and copied the
contents to the hard drive. I booted the installation vmlinuz with
root=/dev/hda2. As expected, the RedHat installer ran. I wanted to
do an NFS install, but the installer won't detect the SMC Ultra
network card in the laptop. It comes up with an error saying 'insmod
failed.'
The laptop / card combo has worked fine under DOS / NetWare for years,
so I'm pretty sure the hardware is OK.
Anyone got any suggestions as to why the card isn't being detected?
Also, section 4.3, part 10 confused me. I presume the soft link
/boot -> /mnt/boot and /cdrom -> /var/log/mount are Slackware
specific? Should I be doing something different for RedHat?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan.

I'm looking for a "mail reader" ( it might be two things, a splitter
and a reader ). What it should do is connect to a smtp
server. Download all my mail and sort it according to subject and
sender based a configuration file. Each seperate category
being a "mailbox". I then read the mailboxes at my lesiure.
The thing is right now I am using NT to connect to the net,
but in the future I will be using linux, so I would want the reader
to have versions on both platforms.
TIA
PS If you know of one that will let me convert from Forte Agent
( which is what I am using now ) ket me know. But this is only a plus.
I am willing to let go of much of my present mail if need be.

I accidentally deleted my old /usr/src/linux directory (didn't notice
the softlink), is there any way I can recover the .config file? Perhaps
there is a command that will generate it given a kernel?
I'm having trouble building a new kernel that works and I'd like to
try 'make oldconfig' instead.

At least for StarOffice there is a simple way to give all users it's own
"copy" of the program. You must install StarOffice with the command-line
option /net (type ./install /net) to get a StarOffice installation. Upon
completion of this install, any user can go to the directory where
StarOffice was installed and select a workstation install when prompted. I
speak from memory, but I suppose you get the idea :-)

Try to switch the printer type in the BIOS from ECP or anything else

There are readers out there in linuxland which will do this. I played a bit
with spruce and mahogany (seach on freshmeat for them). The solution I keep
coming back to is having procmail do the sorting and then I read the mail
that procmail populates and sorts into folders. Procmail does a lot more
but it definitely does mail sorting and processing. I then use mutt to read
the mail. Mutt is a console-based reader which a lot of folks have taken a
liking to. I can use mutt on my box, on my ISPs bsd box, etc.
My approach is to use fetchmail to grab my mail from pop3 mailservers,
procmail to sort it, mutt to read, and exim to send stuff back out again.
Works for me with a dsl line, linux NAT/firewall box, etc.
BTW, Mahogany appears to support both win32 and Linux. It is at the .50
release now I believe.

According to the ftape BUGS file:
* formatting with Colorado Jumbo 350
This doesn't seem to work. I don't think that the kernel driver
needs to be changed; it should be possible to fix this in user
space, modifying ftformat.
I figure the 250 is similar enough that it's suffering from the same
problem maybe?
There's a July 21 snapshot of ftape-tools that may or may not
have fixed things (also one for ftape 4.03).

Guillemot 3D Prohpet uses the NVidia Geforce DDR chips which is supported.
Driver information is available from the driver section at www.nvidia.com. The
Guillemot 3D Prophet II (Geforce 2 GTS) is also supported (mine is working at
last) but the OSS nvidia driver which comes with XFree86 4.0 does not support
it however the one from the nvidia website does! If you are still having

help from other nvidia linux users can be sought at #nvidia on
irc.openprojects.net
The precompiled XFree86 4.0.x drivers from nvidia (from linux drivers section
at www.nvidia.com) should support Geforce2 GTS. The OSS nvidia drivers with
XFree86 4.0.x do not seem to support geforce2. After much mucking around my gf2
gts is working. For some reason nvidias ftp site ones wouldnt do it for me but
the ones via dcc on #nvidia are fine. :-)

Have you built in the ISDN-support into the kernel? What about loading

And, what distribution are you using? SuSE 6.2? RedHat 6.2 (probably)?

The next is not a final solution, but it is a solution.
Most USB-mouses have a USB2PS/2-convertor. Use it. I'm working with a
IntelliMouse Explorer (also USB but with convertor) and it works out
great.
The real solution would probably be (but this is just me typing aloud :)
loading USB-support-modules or recompiling the kernel with USB-support -
although I think this wouldn't be sufficient. Any help?

1/ Have you reconfigured everything to adapt to your new mouse
(xf86config)?
2/ Do you use the Intellimouse on the USB? If so, would it be possible
for you to hang it on the PS/2-port (with the USB2PS2-convertor) and
retry (and, if necessary reconfigure)?
Just to eliminate the possibilities,

Try setting X up with a standard monitor (not with the NEC MultiSync
FP950-selection). If the problem persists, then it is probably a bad
written S3 Savage4 driver.
Look for a more recent driver, and if it isn't available, write to the
author and explain the problem (but first keep this ng posted, maybe
others will have a solution).
