Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 02:35:55 GMT
Hi,
I have a Dell Latitude CPx.
The video card is: ATI Rage Mobility AGP x2 8Mo
I installed Red Hat 6.2 perfectly on it and
it's working fine.
The Xconfigurator did probe the right video card and automatically
selected the Mach64 server.
This is true as it is the chipset for this card.
The configuration runs for 1024x768 (32 bpp).
However, there is a vertical blinking
dashed line which appear on the rigth of the
screen. (and which move a little...)
Does anyone has the right XFree8 configuration
for my screen ?
I believe it is a problem of vertical and/or
horizontal frequencies.
Apart from this strange line, everything is ok.
thanks in advance

What do you mean by, "more power is dangerous for attacks?"
I would like to use masq. Have all internal clients with "fake" ips. Run
it on a linux box with ipchains to do it all.
Is this not a good solution?
Thanks guys.

Subject: Broadband modem help
Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2000 02:58:18 GMT
Hi,
I've been hppily using RH 6.1 with a dialup for quite a while. Last
night I got a Sprint wireless broadband connection and can't seem to get
the thing working. Sprint of course refuses to support Linux. After
several attempts I've got the NIC being recognized at boot. ifconfig
only shows l0, ifconfig eth0 shows the proper IP addr, so it looks like
it is initializing OK but the interface still won't come up. The NIC is
a 3Com 3C905C-TX-M. In spite of what the installer told me, it looks
like dhcp may be required. So in netcfg I tried setting that as the
boot protocol. Now every time I try to activate the if in netcfg the
computer hangs, requiring a hard reset. When I try to bring it up in
ifconfig I get an error someing like "SIO<something> resource
temporarily unavailable" along with a message that the network is down.
This is bound to be something simple that I'm missing. I can't imagine
that this is any different than a DSL or cable modem. I need to get
this thing running soon, winduhs has already crashed on me 4 times just
trying to get this newsgroup read. Thanks for any help anyone can
provide. I would appreciate a cc to my mail account as I'm having a
very hard time with this news server and don't want to miss an answer.

I was faced with the same problem and I am in the midst of working on

My experience playing with xfs and its variants is that you should not put fixed
fonts in the xfs config file. In your /etc/X11/XF86Config, go ahead and list the
various standard font paths first, then at the end add your [FontPath
"tcp/localhost:7100"] or whatever at the end. Then, in the config for the font
server, only list the fontpaths to the TTFs. I know the instructions say
otherwise, but I found I had similar trouble until I set it up this way.

Another thought from a Newbie
Your problem with setting up X to run correctly may be the monitor and
not the card. In my case I have a card capable of SVGA, but I am running
through and old IBM VGA. Although I can select my video card, the monitor
cannot handle it.
I suspect your monitor will only show VGA 640 x 480. Is that possible?

The first paragraph in my letter said:
For the purposes of this 'millenia' is the server and
'aquarius' is the client.
Also, later I said:
Anyway, I've got two directories I'm exporting, one is
/jaz which is my removable Jaz disk and /mp3s which
is just my mp3 partition.
So, all in all, millenia is exporting /jaz and /mp3s to
aquarius. Need anything else?

You can probably find the correct video modeline or resolution setting br
cruising to the linux laptop web page. I also think that Dell provides a
XF86config file which should work off their site. Try support.dell.com and
search on Linux.

Is there a simplified way to install all applications to all users?
I am thinking about stuff like StarOffice, where it seems to want to live in
one's home directory. I would like to be able to install it as root, then let
it be shared by both my wife and I with it being able to be aware of saving to
each home directory as necessary.
I have grown tired of MS products, and started using RH 6.2 this year. But I
would love to get the better aspects of both going. On Linux's favor that's
having a real login and real permissions, on MS's side that's being able to
have seperate users sharing the same program.

When I initally installed RH 6.2, I just did an installation with KDE, and not
Gnome. I just thought I would add it later.
Well, its now taking up space, but I have no idea how to get it to run with
RH's Xwindows login screen. I had a similar login when I was dinking around

How does a guy manually configure that?

I am trying to set up KPPP or gnome-ppp for an ISP (FreeAtLast)
that uses two userIDs and passwords -- one userID/password to
dial in, and second ID/password for a user account. How do I set
this up? I've tried sending the second ID and password via
script, but that doesn't seem to work. I get a connection, but
then get disconnected immediately. I assume the second ID and
password are not being sent correctly.

For Microsoft, why can't separate users share the same program? Just put the
icon in the 'All Users' profile, (if you have multiple users on a
workstation), or set the appropriate permissions (if the app is on a
server). It's no big deal.

I have one username and one password. I use pppd to dial in to my ISP
(Internet Direct).
I use "pppd /dev/ttyS1 57600 connect '/usr/sbin/chat "" atdtp2801234
CONNECT "" Username: <myusername> Password: <mypassword> ">" ppp'
noipdefault defaultroute
The ">" is the menu prompt passed back from the ISP, at which point 'ppp'
must be sent to engage ppp.
This all works great. I don't see why it wouldn't work with more parameters
... you just keep adding them to the end of the chat line. Maybe the above
working command will give you some ideas. Hope this helps.
