Subject: Gnome GUI Login Prompt Problems
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 19:49:00 GMT
Hello,
I've got a problem with the GUI Login for GNOME. I like the flexibility
of it, however for all but two users on my computer, when I log in it
jumps back to the login screen rather than proceeding to the windows
environment.
I know that I am using the proper passwords. Both Root & my primary
user have no problem logging into the system.
Any ideas on how to resolve this problem?

Hmmm, can someone please tell me where to find the log information when
someone tries to logon through rlogin ??
And why don't I have a /var/log/messages file like my Red Hat 6.2,
workstation installation, on my laptop.
This one is a server with RH 6.2, server installation.
I did touch the /var/log/messages file, but it is still empty after about a
half a hour.
Please some help ?

Easy solution is to un-plug your internal PC speaker that is if the bell is
not generated via the sound card. Sounds odd though why you have that
problem in the first place...
It may be the way RH has set up on your PC. Search for a line \0x07 in your
config files (thats the bell code in Hex) and you may find it as "echo en
\0x07" on some config line entry.

You can use cp to copy the files
I upgraded my linux boxs hdd and I used the upgrade harddisk howto to do it.
have a look on your system for the howto or you can get it off of the net.

Hi,
I've got a Toshiba Satellite 2710 with RH6.2 installed, everything works
nicely even the winmodem but....
After the Maestro soundmodule is installed I have to interrupt/skip the
interactive startup at pcmcia detection otherwise it'll get stuck.
Does this maybe have something to do with the shared interrupt IRQ-11?
Any insight/ help would be appreciated

This may be the wrong time for you to open a new can of worms, I see
you already have some. However,
the new kernels, 2.4.0 series have LVM, which allows your unused
partitions to become resizable drives. It
seems totally reliable to me, so far, and what a huge advantage it brings.

Subject: Routing Question
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 03:25:59 -0700
How do I route through the firewall to my internal network??
I have set up a firewall box on a test network 10.20.150.5 external
interface (This interface is the NIC to my network from my test setup of two
boxes. Once it all works I will connect it to the internet).
The internal interface is on the firewall box is 10.21.100.5.
The computer behind the firewall is 10.21.100.10.
I can ping all boxes from all NIC's on the same address 10.20 can ping 10.20
10.21 can ping 10.21.
example I can ping my network from 10.20.150.5 interface. I can ping the
two boxes from the 10.21.100.X (5&10).
But when I try to ping 10.20.150.X from 10.21.100.10 I cannot get a
response.
I have enabled echo 1> /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward.
I have spent several days trying to find an anwer among the Linux
documentation READ_ME HOW_TO'S etc. newsgroups and I am finding no anwer.
Does anyone have any ideas??
What should the gateway of the internal box be? The Ip address of this box
is 10.21.100.10. Should it be the internal ip address of the firewall box
10.21.100.5?
What should the gateway of the firewall box be should it be the internet
router for my network?
Does anyone know of any good sites that show the commands that I should use.
Some of the commands that are shown in the documentation do not work.

Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 18:23:27 -0400
I can and have created 1.68MB bootable ms-dos diskettes with fdformat. I boot win95
in command-line mode and type:
fdformat a: t82 n21 c4 d16 m240 x2 y4 k
sys a:
This creates a bootable diskette in Microsoft's own "DMF" 1.68mb format. DMF support
is built-into Win95 and its "MS-DOS 7" because Win95 was distributed on DMF floppies.
If WinImage or any other formatter creates DMF-formatted diskettes, they should work
too.
Using DMF format for *every* disk is dangerous. Cheaper and older diskettes will have
more errors with DMF.
Clay, the section of Fdformat.doc you referred to was written before Win95 was
released, when no version of ms-dos understood DMF. For older versions of ms-dos, the
instructions are correct.
Finally, if you have trouble reading a 1.68mb diskette after you've already read a
1.44mb disk, here's a fix:

You can play with the font settings in the Edit -> preferences menu, but
there are a number of tweaks that are helpful:

This is a well-known problem with V.90. It happened to me and I worked
with my ISP for a long time trying different modem init strings, without
success. Finally gave up and changed ISPs, which solved the problem. It's
probably some kind of protocol incompatibility between your modems and your
ISP's.
For lots of information about problems with 56K and troubleshooting, see
the "56K=V.unreliable" site, http://808hi.com/56k/. I know there's a
mention of this problem (though not much in the way of a solution)
somewhere in a sample list of messages about people's V.90 problems.
Good luck,
Andrew.
