I have never hear of Mandrake 6.5. I have 6.1 running on one machine and 7.1
running on my other two (one being dual boot win98 and Linux). Mandrake 7.1
comes with a boot loader (grub) that is not limited by the 1024 limit. On my
dual boot Win98/Linux system I have a 17.2 Gig maxtor drive attached to the
Integrated Ultra66 controller on the motherboard (Tyan Trinity S1598) with the
first 10G dedicated to Win98 and the last 6G or so dedicated to linux. I have
55G is on my other Linux box spread across a 10G (system, swap, and image drive)
and 45G (data) drive. Cylinder limitations have not been a concern yet with
Mandrake 7.1. (I ran into cylinder limitations on older distros of Mandrake
though.)

There are a couple of things that you can do (like read the Large-Disk-HOWTO).
I would recommend not using win98's fdisk more than necessary for one. Also,
you can make a small boot (/boot) partition at the beginning of your disk (like
8~20 megs) for linux without upsetting win98. Just be carefull to not put your
Linux partitions in a dos extended partition or windows will reformat them
without prompting. I've lost Linux partitions this way and one of my friends
lost all traces of his Linux system this way except for a few extra partitions
that showed up in windows as empty windows drives. (I recently saw a HOWTO that
goes over recovering Linux partitions after Windows reformats your partitions
and claims them as its own.)

Something else that crossed my mind is if you are seeing the number of cylinders
that you claim, you might want to make sure that your BIOS is doing an LBA
translation on the drive. From what you described, it didn't sound like the LBA
translation mechanism was working properly or wasn't turned on.

Hi there,

As with other newbies, I would like to ask for some advice as to what is the
suitable way of making a back-up mail server.

We wanted to have a back-up mail server so in cases where the primary mail
server went down (hardware failure or some other problems), we can just copy
the /var/spool/mail/ directory to the other mail server, turn it on and
everything would be as normal as possible.

Thanks.

Hi,

I'm an absolute beginner in Linux (and writting english... as you see).

I have been trying to install RedHat 6.1 in an AMD 400 Mhz 64Mb system with
2 HD, one 6Gb HD to W98 (master) and another 850Mb HD (slave) which should
be completely devoted to my Linux installation. The install program
recognize 850Mb but is only capable to allocate 533Mb to / partition and 16
Mb to the swap. Once installed (the installation sometimes stop when
formating /, and I had to reinice two times (?) ), the system works fine but
there is no space to install any programs... What is wrong?

Another question is that I have installed a poor resolution (KDE) and I
would like to display 800x600 with 16 bits colour depth at least. What is
the file controling the display resolution. Can I change the display from
any window utility (as in W98).

Thanks

For cronjobs you can arrange for the programs to put their output
somewhere else

1 1 1 1 1 /usr/local/bin/magiccronjob > /var/tmp/crouout 2>&1

If you don't redirect stadnard output and standard error, and if
the program generate some output, this output will show up in
a mail message. If the program does not produce any output
then you won't get any mail message either.

I'm trying to build a Kernel so I can have sound on my Dell Inspiron 7500,
what a nightmare! This time the 'make modules' has errors in it. Also,
the how-to says to pick a modutils patch with the same version as the
kernel, but I don't see any 2.2.16 patches on the ftp.kernle.org site!

There must be an easier way!!

Thanks

You can simply add secondary mail server(s) into your domain configuration
file with lower priority, and it'll preserve you in case of primary server
fail.

No, it doesn't. Since v4 at least, PowerQuest has included
bootable a DR-DOS diskette image from which you can run the DOS
version of Partition Magic. No MS operating system is needed on
the HD or elsewhere.

Hello,

I have installed suse 6.4.
My graphic card is a 3DFX Voodoo 3 3000.

My 2D X server v. 3.3.6 works fine, but the 3D acceleration (no DRI
support) via mesa v3 library doesn't work.

When i make tests with glut demos or xlock-mesa, the variable
MESA_GLX_FX exported and set to "fullscreen" has no effects. However,
kmod loads the 3dfx module and i have no error.

I have installed all the required packages :
mesa3dfx, dev3dfx, glidesdk and glide_v3

I have inspected my configuration. I have found some mismatch :

. The /etc/XF86Config file contains a line to load glx.so module but
this package is not installed.
. The deps in rpm database are invalid for mesa3dfx package. It requires
glide_vg or glide_vr packages. These two packages are not compatible
with glide_v3 packages, the driver for voodoo 3.

The www.mesa3d.org site include the voodoo3 in the list of hardware
supported by mesa but the Mesa v
oodoo driver home page
(http://www-hmw.caribel.pisa.it/fxmesa/index.shtml) does not.

Thank you for your help.

Note that even Slack has given up trying to fit anything
but the basic series on floppy anymore. That means A (for
the kernel and basic text-mode system) AP (for basic text mode
utilities), and N (for text-mode networking). When these are
installed they estimate your system should be able to download
the remaining large packages and series and install them
directly from your hard disk. Even the basic install described
above will run somewhere between 30-50 floppies.

You don't buy Slack on diskette, you'll need to build it
yourself. The easiest online archives to build the boot disk,
root disk, and basic series from are sunsite.unc.edu and
www.freesoftware.com Or build the floppy set on someone
else's machine from the CD. www.cheapbytes.com still has
older slack CD's (3.5 and 4.0) for the hard-to-beat price
of $0.00 (plus $5.00 postage) Or the current version 7.1
(ought to be called 4.2, but they succumbed to version inflation)
for $3.99.

Hi Phillip

su to root
run control-panel
select network configurator
highlight ppp0
click edit
in hardware section make sure you check "allow any user to (de)activate interface"
save your way back out

worked for me

Try playing around with windows (ie booting in safe mode etc).

If you still can't get it to respond your best bet is to start again.

Uninstall lilo. (lilo -u, or is that lilo -U - do "man lilo").
When you reboot you should able able to go staight into windows.
If not do "fdisk /mbr" from a windows bootdisk.
If windows still doesn't work, who knows whats wrong with it? You'll
probably have to do a reinstall.

Then reinstall Red Hat. Do a custom install, otherwise you don't know
what its doing. You don't have to install lilo there are other ways to
boot linux (bootdisk, loadlin).

Of course you should try to avoid having to do this (two OS
reinstalls) but if you can't do anything else I guess its what you
have to do.
