    ps -ef

gives a list of all processes and their IDs. To trim that down a bit,
use grep to pick out the process-name of interest:

    ps -ef | grep "process-name"

however, the grep command will find itself in the ps output, which can
be confusing. So alter the grep match string to include a special
character. If the process-name of interest is "foobar", then:

    ps -ef | grep "[f}]oobar"

will show only foobar entries.

And finally, there is the the killall command, which will kill all
instances of the given process-name:

    killall "process-name"

I think you can do it via /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny, or by
commenting out in.telnetd in inetd.conf. But there is probably some
easier way.

To disable it totally, comment out the telnet line in
/etc/inetd.conf. This is the way to do it. Of course you could just
uninstall the daemon, but then you would get a lot of 'in.telnetd not
found'-type errors...

1) Determine what process is your telnet server. You need to know the program
name in order to be able to disable it. On my system(s) the name is in.telnetd

2) grep through your /etc/rc.d/ scripts for the name of the telnet server
(established in step 1, above). Edit each script so located, and comment out the
logic that starts up the telnet server.

3) edit your /etc/inetd.conf, and comment out the line that reads
telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd

4) kill your telnet server if it is still up

5) telinit q to reprocess the current runstate (probably not necessary, but
should test the changes to your rc.d scripts)

Funnily enough I had exactly the same problem last night.
The symptoms look like there's something wrong with the boot sector;
everything copies onto the drive OK, but DOS won't boot off it.
It was actually fine until I noticed that the primary DOS partition
started about 1.2Gb into the disk and moved it with
Partition Magic (fool).

My fix was going to be to use cfdisk to create a 1.5Gb DOS partition at the
front of the drive, carry on installing Slackware and use lilo to recreate a
usable boot sector. And remember *never* to run "lilo -u".

So if LBA is a problem (and I doubt it is), it affects DOS too....
If I find anything useful, I'll let you know.

I finally figured out what was wrong, the file directive was set to deny
all. Apparently this one directive has priority over all the other ones so
the server couldn't read any of the .html files.

All better now.

Thanks for everyone's help,

Don't know if it's relevant, but underscores aren't valid characters in
DNS hostnames. Maybe the new apache is more picky than your DNS servers?

As a more practical solution, netcat is handy for impersonating servers.
You could set that up to listen on port 80, and see what headers these
browsers are sending.

Search on freshmeat.net; if the headers look OK, *then* try changing
the hostname, maybe...

If so, then you should have agpgart.o in your modules directory (usually
/lib/modules/[kernel version]/misc). Try 'locate agpgart.o' to find
it. You'll need to load this first before running X ('/sbin/insmod
agpgart.o').

Then add it. 'man mknod' for info.

try the XFCom-i810 X server!!!
you can get it from : ftp://ftp.precisioninsight.com/pub/precisio/XFCom/
I recommend getting the the source for the kernel module
I819Gtt!! this is very important to have!! and do a
rpm --rebuild <name of source rpm>
this will built the module for you...then just goto the directory where the
install rpm that you built is and do a
rpm -i <name of install rpm>
and then goto /usr/doc and look for the directory for the XFCom server and
read the readme's!!

to add to what others have said, Debian has a floppy boot, too.
Actually, you can make floppies for a "base system" that will get you
started, then use that system to access files for further installation.
The current base is 7-10 floppies. Then, you can use a serial link (eg
PPP) to another machine with a cdrom to retrieve the rest (or a network
card to ftp or nfs the files, etc.).
Both Debian's base system floppies and Slackwares (A files) are
typically available as floppy disk images somewhere on the distribution
cdrom or distribution www site. Both distributions cdroms have the
tools to write linux disks from dos/win (rawrite), or you can dd the
disk-images from a linux system.

lpt1. In linux, the HP works ok pumping out postscript print jobs, but the Epson
doesn't. The conf.modules has three ports set up, two of which reflect the dos
settings along with the aliases. If I attempt to print to the Epson, the job just
causes the print queue to pulsate -- nothing is printed, yes, I'm using an
appropriate Ghostscript filter, etc. I'm using Red Hat 6.2; curiously, all this
worked back under 5.1!

Hi Manfred,
You could try using Yast 1 and making a boot floppy from Lilo.

I would recommend using text based yast1.You can create and format all your
partitions from that quite easily. I wouldn't waste time with dos fdisk.

You might as well ask: "Islam or Judaism"?

If anyone needs me, I'll be in my Flame Bunker (pat. pending).
