Scandisk cannot and will not write to an ext2fs filesystem. The only remote
way Scandisk could corrupt it would be if the partitions are overlapping,
which is caused by a misconfiguration when partitioning took place.

Scandisk WILL, however, overwrite the MASTER BOOT RECORD if "Check boot
record" is selected in Scandisk and FIX ERRORS AUTOMATICALLY is turned on.
You should never run Microsoft Scandisk in this mode if you are using a
third party bootloader such as LILO.

I am now using the "mpegtv" to play a vcd.
Once I mount the cdrom, the "/cdrom" must be belongs to the "root"

Q: Is it normal?

As the software need to do streaming of the my cdrom,
I can only play the vcd by "root".

Hi. Its been awhile since I put together my TR/ethernet router, but I
believe that I had to build the TR card into the kernel (rather than
using modules). I probably would have tried modules first (it was only
the 2nd linux machine I got going). Also, make sure that you know what
your interrupts & shared RAM & addresses & all the other funky stuff
that TR cards have on 'em are - I'm sure I had to do that through DOS.

Hello plp
Here's the thing:
If I boot the system (dual boot: win98/linux) for the first time, linux runs
ok, goes to prompt and I can go right on. BUT if I do a restart, do
something on windows, and then restart to enter Linux... It hangs on the
line: PII. hda.... whatever. I don't understand why, but my guess is that
since my HD is about 8.4Gb and linux is in the 4th partition (logical), LILO
must be failing somehow. Anyway, I tought at first that it was a Kernel
prob, so I tried to compile one for myself using some notes I took from here
and there. Results: Crash and Burn. I did everything 'by the book' and It
failed, resulting in reinstallation of linux. I'm out ofd answers for this
and I need expert help, can some guro out there give sompe directions ?

Thanks in Advance

Hello,

I'm running RedHat linux 6.2 on my 2nd partition of my SCSI HD.

As soon as my system and X (I use gnome) is up and running I hear
disk activity every few seconds.

After a couple of minutes 'dmesg' show hundreds of the following messages:

VFS: disk change detected on device sr(11,1)

Anybody have any idea what's going one ?

Subject: Unable to boot into Linux
Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2000 14:46:56 GMT

Hi all,

After 2 days trying to get a working SuSE 6.4 installation on my PC, it gets
really frustrating....

In setup (YaST2), there are several options where to install LILO to, but
none of them seem to work.

If I choose to install it to floppy, it doesn't. It doesn't even attempt to
access the floppy drive. (The drive is OK. I tried to boot a RedHat boot
disk and that worked, I used the same drive to create a boot disk using
rawrite and that worked.)

If I choose to install it to the MBR, it doesn't. After rebooting, LILO does
not appear. Instead, the NT boot manager shows up.

Of course, installing the freaking stuff cost you over an hour from start to
finish.

Then I decided to create a bootfloppy manually. The manual optimistically
says: use
dd if=Your_Kernel of=/dev/fd0 bs=18k
and for Your_Kernel, /boot/vmlinuz should be filled in.
Of course, it isn't there, and also not in the root (as it used to be
according to the manual)

Of course, the recommended NT-coexistence install doesn't work for me
either, because I wouldn't know WHAT to fill in at the 'image=' entry of
lilo.conf.

When I installed RedHat 5.2 some year ago (on the very same machine, same
setup with NT), I didn't have all these problems.
In fact, in utter frustration, I have just re-installed RedHat 5.2 again and
it works right away.
I am NOT impressed, NOT amused, and very tired.
Can anybody help me get back on track with this one and prevent me throwing
the entire SuSE box and CD's in the shredder?

Thanks in advance.
Manfred

Hello!

I have got the following problem:
I want to install both Linux (SuSE6.4) and Windows 98 on a new system
with a 20.5 GB Western-Digital IDE HD. I have already spent some time
trying, but nothing seems to work.

Obviously Windows and Linux cannot agree on the partitioning of the
harddisk. I have tried both LBA and NORMAL as BIOS modes for the disk.
Every time the result was that one of the OSes only recognized 500MB or
8GB of the disk, or the partitions overlapped.

Thus my questions are:
- which mode is the right one (LBA, NORMAL or LARGE)
- which software should be used for the partitioning (DOS fdisk,
Linux fdisk, cfdisk, yast or WD Data Lifeguard)
- are there special parameters for the kernel or for fdisk that have to
be specified

So far I think I have found out that Windows only works with LBA, Linux
only with NORMAL.

If you know a solution: Please answer by E-Mail.

Only IBM ISA cards that are NOT LAN_Streamers are supported. A very few other cards
will work because they use the IBM
chipset. The very latest PCI card from IBM is also supposed to work, but I have not
tried them yet. I have TR running
on a number of Linux PC's, including my laptop, but they all use IBM brand, older
model cards.
