if your hdd is > 8 GB:
create a small partition for "boot" below 1024 Cylinders.
lilo may not be able to boot from behind 1024, if the kernel is there

When i test my glide config with /usr/bin/test3Dfx, i have the message "
video memory unprotecting " then a seg fault !
my glide package is glide_v3-2.60-49 ( glide v 2.60.00.0415) and my
Xfree SVGA Server is 3.3.6.
Where is the problem ?

Ok, I tried the card removal thing, no go. I tried the no387 mode, but it hangs later
because all the precompiled kernals need a math coprocessor.
I thought about the possibility the CPU had a stroke, but if so, why does Windows
still run great?

I removed two NICs and a hard drive from a pentium PC. The PC was being used
as a firewall, but I removed the NICs because they were behaving erratically
on that PC. The NICs worked OK on an NT machine I have, so I concluded that
the problem was with the PC.
Then, I installed the hard drive and the NICs in an HP 5/75 PC. The PC
booted up OK, except when it reached the NICs. At this point, I received the
message: "Delaying eth0 initialization..[FAILED]". I got the same message
for the 2nd NIC, eth1.
When I attempt to ping either the internet or my intranet, I get the
message:"Network is unreachable."
I've changed nothing in linuxconf, so does anyone have any other
suggestions?

If you haven't tried the other environments, you should. IceWM, XFCE, Blackbox, and
WindowMaker
without KDE are all good choices. All have text-file-based menus, so they're easy to
trim and
customise. Ice, XFCE and Blackbox are much smaller and faster than KDE or Gnome. All
will run KDE-
or Gnome-based apps if you have the libraries installed.
Ice is my choice, for ease of hot-key configuration (I'm too lazy to reach for the
mouse), speed
and simplicity. Unfortunately, it looks a lot like Windows.
XFCE is also small & fast, has sound effects out-of-the-box, and is very easy to
customise.
Blackbox takes a little more skill to customize, but is the best choice if you don't
have much
memory, or a slow CPU.
WindowMaker is the prettiest & most polished.
They're all attractive, and they all have their points. As has been suggested, set up
a bunch of
user accounts, and give each a different windowmanager/environment. See which YOU like
best.

What kernel version are you using? It seems (at least for me) that all
kernels after 2.4.0-test1 do not work with the /dev/3dfx module.

I'm still a bit comfused about this one, but I thought that KDE and
GNOME were a set of libraries providing nice functions. They often run
with the ??? and Enlightenment wm respectively, although this is not
necessary. So can't you just install both sets of libs, choose a wm and
play with whatever apps you want, be they KDE or GNOME apps?

Lilo doesn't care what is in the partition it's told to boot.
so NTFS ( ver 4,5,6....) or any other fs, it's fine.
Preferably, find a tool that can free some space for the installation.
And do not put everything into a single partition.
If the latest version of Partition magic can't do it , I don't know.
Before you mess with it, please review information on Primary partitions,
Extended partitions, Master Boot Record, Partition Type ID's etc.
Also, a good understanding of the boot process would be usefull when you get
stuck, or in general when w2k goes nuts and refuses to boot . For example ,
Why does the message "NO ROM BASIC" pop up ? :)
Also note that ntfs support is not unheard of for linux, but it is shaky at
best.
Best is to use a fat32 partition to exchange data. linux reads fat32's as
vfat and has no problem with long file names.
I suggest you put /boot into the first area of the hdd, within the 1024
cylinder boundary, and put lilo in the /boot partition ( it has to be
primary , and bootable ).
Make sure that the bios's notion of the hdd values and linux's notion of
them are the same. If different, you can
a) make bios compliant with linux's report
b) tell LILO on boot the hdd values, and leave the bios alone.
(b) may be easier as it won't disturb w2k .
Just wondering : On the 30 GB partition , how big are the clusters ?

This is a bit odd, since an fsck should set the "time since last check"
field appropriately. Anyway, you can disable the message by entering
"tune2fs -i 0 /dev/hdXY" when that particular partition is mounted
read-only. Have a look at the man page for tune2fs as well....

This looks like you're not getting DNS service. DNS is a service
that resolves names (like www.yahoo.com) to their respective
numeric TCP/IP addresses, and the numeric addresses are then used
to make the actual connection.

Even "real" IP addresses can be (and often are) fortified behind
firewalls. Also, it is common to deny direct HTTP connections
to enforce the use of HTTP proxy/cache servers (in an attempt
to reduce bandwidth consumption).

Hello folks!
I have a network I am trying to set up and I have wasted SO many hours
and no results.
One machine is Windows 98
The other is a Linux box running Slackware 7
Both machines are hooked into a Linksys 5 port workgroup hub
The Router is a Netgear RT311
This router has been great after some initial difficulty setting it up.
The Win machine
works great through it. My problem is setting up Linux and getting Linux
to see the
router..
The IP of the Router is 192.168.0.1
The Linux box uses a 3Com 509B NIC. The machine recognizes the card ok.
(Other info, it's a
Pentium 75)
When I type 'netconfig'
I put in these values .. hostname --> milarepa
Domain name --> this is a complete mystery to me. It's a private
network. What domain name? (I typed 'localnetwork' just for something to
put in)
The when given the options of Static IP, DHCP and loopback I selected
DHCP
Then I get the notification that "Your networking software has now been
configured"
Now on bootup after this (during startup), I get...
"Attempting to configure eth0 by contacting a DHCP server"
The corresponding hub light goes on during this period, the machine
hangs for about
30seconds and then the light goes out and I get
"Activating IPv4 packet forwarding"
After logging in, I type in "ifconfig" and the only thing that shows up
are the "lo" settings.
Needless to say pinging the router's IP at 192.168.0.1 gets me nothing.
except
ping : sendto: Network is unreachable
ping: wrote 192.168.0.1 64 chars, ret = -1
over and over......
When I type in "route" I get (hyphens added to keep thinsg lined up)
Destination--------Gateway---Genmask-------Flags---Metric---Ref--Use----Iface
loopback------------- *

Now when I type "netconfig"
I put in these values.. hostname --> milarepa

local machine IP ---> 192.168.0.4 (Win 98 machine is 192.168.0.2)
netmask ----> 255.255.255.0 (same as the Win 98 machine settings)
Gateway address ---- > 192.168.0.1 (same as Win 98 machine settings)
Will you be accessing a nameserver? ---> Yes
Enter name server for domain ---- > 24.11.248.17 (same as Win 98
machine settings, points to @home)
Next there is the option presented of "Probe for Network Card"
I select "Probe" and it successfully detects the 3c509 card
Then I get "Your networking software has now been configured"
Now when I boot the box I get (during startup) .....
Configuring eth0 as 192.168.0.4
eth0: Setting Rx mode to 1 addresses
"Activating IPv4 packet forwarding"
All this time the corresponding hub light on the box is on and stays on.
I log in, I type "ifconfig" and get both eth0 and lo settings
Typing "route", I get this .. (hyphens added to keep thinsg lined up)
Destination----Gateway-----Genmask------Flags----Metric--Ref---Use---Iface
localnet-------- *

Now when I type "ping 192.168.0.1" to ping the router, nothing happens
I get a hang and 100% packet loss
When I look at the Hub, light 1 (where the 98 box is, is just fine)
Light 3 (the port where the Linux box is plugged in) and light 5 (which
I assume is the uplink light)
both flash in unison, not fast, maybe a second and half. When I stop the
'ping", the lights stop flashing.
I know I am SO close to getting this darn thing working but I have no
idea where to go after this.
Does anyone have any idea what we might do to solve this problem? This
is the first time I have ever
dealt with a router and linux and I am losing very valuable development
time over this seemingly simple
hang up.

Yes and No. KDE and GNOME are "desktop environments". Libraries, toolbars,
sound-servers, theme
management, menuing system, and some apps are all part of the environment, with various
windowmanagers adapted to use within the environment.
You can do exactly what you're asking, though; install the libs, pick your favorite
wm and run all
the apps.
IMN-S-HO, the best of all worlds.

I lost LILO after reinstalling Win2K. I made a boot disk (bare.i) and got
back in to Linux.
Then I ran /sbin/lilo. It said.
Adding Linux...
Adding Win2000...
bla-bla-bla...
This should reset my MBR to point to LILO right???
(in lilo.conf install=/boot/boot.b, which is what I want and the default...)
When I rebooted, it still boots right into Win2K.
Help!?!?

Well.. if you put lilo on the 3rd partition instead of the MBR, (a
good idea with dual boot systems) then it's easy.
Get dos fdisk
set the machine to boot from the linux partition.
If it was on the MBR, it will have to be put back on there.
YOu should probably search out one of the rescue disk things, try
google - go to web directory, computers, software, operating systems,
linux, distributions, mini-linux, single floppy. there's a rescue
list there too.

Two possibilities exist in reguards to windows.
1. Windows does not care about a math-co.
2. Windows seeing your mathco is out to lunch is just using
software emulation (the no387 equiv to Linux).
Now to get linux up and running. get Slackware 7.1 and try
that. again in the boot tell it no387 and see if the slackware
bootdisk/rootdisk installer will work (Slackware usually has software
mathco support enabled if the hardware support bombs. Myself am
running slackware 3.9 as I don't want to deal with glibc. If you want
to get it go to
http://www.slackware.com which is the web page for slackware. They
have slackware 7.1 and I believe 7.2 online there.
