Subject: Strange problem with pinging
I have set up basic networking on a Linux box running RedHat6.2 inside a
firewall and I am seeing some strange problem. I ping to a host outside
my firewall and it responds. I ping again and it responds. I ping
another time and it does not. Now from this point onward, I can not ping
any host outside my firewall. But I can ping any host inside my local
network anytime.
This is how my routing table looks like: (192.168.27.75 is the IP
address of my machine, and yes, 192.168.27.1 is IP of firewall)

Other info: I can ping both name and IP wise, so no name resolution
problem here. And DNS is OK too, atleast when the outside hosts are
responding. My trouble is that everything works fine for a few minutes
and then it does not. I mean by not responding as: no reply at all.
i.e., it just waits until I do a Ctrl+C.
Any Networking gurus, plz? Thanks.

You can do it with a program that is included with most Distro's named
FIPS.

Does anyone have experience setting up a loghost machine to keep logs
from several different Linux/Solaris/FreeBSD machines or Cisco/Bay
routers? I have read quite a bit on the subject but my log machine still
does not appear to be recieving any logs from the other machines or
routers. Perhaps someone has set something like this up before and has a
working syslog.conf or other files I could look at. Any help would be
appreciated.

Hi there,
I'm trying to put red hat linux onto an sun ipc
(possibly a tad ambitius, as I'm neither used to sun or linux....)
and I can get it to boot from the cd and go through and
choose my keyboard and monitor,
Just before the 'prepareing to install' time bar comes up, there
is a msg saying that the system needs to create a swap file
immediatly because there isn't enough memory ( it has 24 M )
I answer yes to this and start installing.
it gets about a 1/3 of the way through the installation
and comes up with the error msg:
"Install exited abnormally
recieved signal 10
sending termination signals"
And the it it unmounts every thing and tells me I can reboot.
Very nice of it, but I've no idea why...

It looks like your password is wrong.
But I had such a problem with a username (at the provider) wich contains
punctuations (a ,) .
Using pap resolved the problem.
Its less secure but was the only way to get this username to work.

I think in the print setup "fit to page" is selected...I think that is
the default, try turning it off.

recognize my sound card at first, but sndconfig did later on.

Do you know that you can have 2 accounts, 1 running Gnome, and the other
running KDE? (I run Gnome on 1 account, Motif on another account, KDE
on a 3rd account, and Afterstep on a 4th account....because I can.) Set
the accounts up, try both Desktops, and decide which you like.

I had RedHat up and running real nice---dual booting between Linux and Win2K
using LILO as boot manager.
Then I reinstalled Win2K. Now it boots directly into Win2K without the
slightest regard for Linux.
I assume M$ was nice enough to overwrite my MBR info.
How can I restore this? My kernel vmlinuz is on the third partition (I
believe /dev/hda2)
I have access to rawrite, fips, restorrb, etc... I don't have an existing
LILO bootdisk.
What do I need to do to make things happy again?

Depending on how Suse is setup, you might have the option of
choosing which enviroment you want to run everytime you log in.
This gave a colleague of mine great relief under Redhat, for he
didn't take to GNOME.

I do not know why you are having trouble seeing the entire 850 MB.
Perhaps part of the disk is allocated to something else? Take a look at
it with linux "fdisk"--this program is usually on a rescue disk / boot
floppy.

You are filling up your entire disk with the programs you've
requested. Although the linux kernel is small and many fine miniature
distributions exist that will run off of 1 to a few 3-1/2" floppy disks,
most modern linux distributions come with many hundreds of megabytes of
assorted programs. Suse comes with many gigabytes of assorted
programs. A typical default install these days assumes you have several
gigabytes of drive space to devote to all these wonderful unix tools,
GNU tools, web servers, office suites, engineering programs, etc. Your
850 MB drive does not have room for all of these. Try a minimum
install, and add packages from there.

There are several tools that will help you reconfigure your
Xwindows set up. Xconfigurator is one. Since I usually run Suse, I ran
SaX, which is Suse specific, (and do not recall the other general
utitlities). To get best configuration, you need to know details about
your video card and monitor. RH may have additional tools (check your
docs).

My machine also seems to crash under RPM only. I have an Abit BP6 w/ two
celerons. I was at first suspicious of the SMP stuff, but it still crashes
in uniprocessor mode. Mandrake 7.1, Redhat 6.1, and Abit's Gentus 6.1 all
crash under RPM, not all the time but occasionally.
Anyone have any clues?

Hi managers,
I have a problem during the instalation that I cannot solve.
My machine is:
Compaq Pres�rio 7598
40 Gb of HD
256 Mb of memory
Windows 98b installed
Iniatial partition is C:\ with 37.* and d:\ with 2.*
1) First PROBLEM
As recommeded by the Red Hat manual, before install the Red Hat, I
partionned my disk using FIPS.EXE.
I partitionned the first partion (c:\) like:
1) 7.* Gb (old 37.* Gb partition)
2) 2.* Gb (originial partition of drive D:\ - comes from Compaq)
3) 7.* Gb (new partition for Linux - starting in cylinder 997)
4) 23.* Gb (new partition)
When I run the instalation and try to use Druid or fdisk I receive the
following message:
"An erro occurred reading the partition table for the block HDA. The error
was: No such file or directory"
When I press <OK> another message comes:
"An error has occurred - no valid devices were found on which to create new
filesystems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem"
I dont have any physical problem on my hard disk.
2) SECOND PROBLEM
I used the RESTORRB.EXE to undo what the FIPS did. But I still have 4
partitions entries, although the last two partition doesn't have any size
information (zero).
If try to install I have the same error I got in problem 1.
I saw other people with similar problems in the internet, but nobody
answered that.
It is very important to finish this installation. Can someone help me?

Most likely ppp and ftp are installed. Check your boot log. To get them
working fully you need to configure your modem. Get a good book on linux for
this and other questions. My suggestion for Mandrake is Linux: The Complete
Reference from Walnut Creek.

I've been running Linux on my computer for almost a year now, but for
the moment I need to go back to Win98 for a couple of months to get some
work done. I'm satisfied with Linux (running Mandrake 7.0), but there
are some apps that have no equivalent under Linux (all Adobe apps for
example). I've tried to format my HD to come back with a
MS-DOS partition (FAT32) but it seems to be impossible, since the
Windows boot disk won't be able to repartition a HD that is under Linux
native partitions. I want to go back to Win for a moment. Can I? I need
some help to get back to win partitions...

Hello everybody,
I've got a problem that I hope you may help me to solve.
I have a linux box running on a 3 partitions filesystem: 1 for root,
1 for /usr and 1 for /home. They all stay on the extended partition
after the first, primary, win98 one. The flavor of linux is red hat
version 6.2. It has always run fine till now, and it still does, but
today I have noticed a small warning during the boot messages.
It says something like the checking time has arrived, and that it
should be wise to run e2fsck on the linux partitions. It has nothing
to do with the maximal mount count, though, because it was written
before, during and after the "forced check" due to the mount count.
I started linux in single user mode, unmounted all the three
partitions and run e2fsck manually, but nothing happened. BTW, I used
the options -c -f on /dev/hda[5-7]
But then the warning still popped out. What should I do to convince
linux I'm a good guy and I regularly check my filesystems, and that I
just checked them?
Any help would be appreciated.

As far as I can see, your configuration files look OK. I presume
you're sure that you're specifying the correct username and password?
You could try to see if you can connect using PAP by commenting out the entry
in the chap-secrets file and adding an entry for PAP in the PAP secrets file.
Choose a name for the remote end, e.g. "my_isp" and change your entry in
ppp/options to "remotename my_isp". The PAP entry would also refer to my_isp.
Even if this doesn't solve the problem, the log data from pppd might help.
