Subject: installing Corel Linux on new IBM ThinkPad with Windows 2000
Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 14:30:08 GMT

I just purchased an IBM ThinkPad with W2K pre-installed. I also have a
free copy of Corel Linux that I'd like to install, and be able to dual
boot. My question is, if my hard drive is 12 GB, what would be the best
way to install Linux? Should I create a new partition, or install Linux
on the existing Windows partition? To create a new partition, would I
have to buy PartitionMagic to ensure I don't have to format my hard drive,
or will the utilities that come with Corel Linux make it possible to
create a new partition without losing data? And finally, if I create a
new partition, how much space would be suitable to give Linux? Thanks...

I finally think i found a turn around but i don't know if it will be so
efficient and not dangerous along the times...

I had :16383, 16 , 63 and 512k by sector on the disk

I have been on the IBM and Maxtor sites to watch about solutions and some
people said they just arbitrary change the cylinder number with no problem.
I then multiplied the number of cylinder by 4 16383*4=65532
and put it in my lilo config as C config.

It seems to work. I have been able to perform a 4 times 8.4 Go partition on
my 40Go disk.
(lost 7Go :( )
I don't find this turn around elegant and don't know the danger for my
hardware and the integrity of my datas... I just cross my fingers :)

Thanks for the help. Just manage to wipe out LILO and the Linux native
partitions by using the Linux partition utility which comes with DrakX. MS
fdisk just couldn,t do the job...
Now running back Win98 since last night after a year of Linux, and it feels
really really really bad. Windows crashed 5 times after only 20 minutes it
was installed.
I didn't remember how slow and sluggish that OS was...
I will come back home soon to my favorite penguin !

Subject: PPP problems, help!
Date: 28 Jul 2000 09:22:02 -0600

Hello everyone,

I have a Linux laptop at home running Red Hat 6.2, and I'm trying to
connect to network at work through a modem. I set up the ppp and chat
configuration files (through netcfg) and the modem seems to be working
fine. The modem dials in and the connection is established, but a few
seconds later the connection is terminated and the modem starts to
dial again.

In my /var/log/messages file I have:

...
Serial connection established.
Using interface ppp0.
LCP: timed out sending config requests.
Connection terminated.
Receive serial link is not 8 bit clean.
Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0.
Hangup (SIGHUP).
Exit.

Then in one of the FAQs I found:

" 'The line is not 8 bit clean'. This means that you need to have
eight data bits, no parity, and on stop bit. The PPP link absolutely
requires eight data bits"

Well, I went through netcfg, netconf and linuxconf and did not find a
way to set my modem to work with eight data bits, no parity, and on
stop bit. Does anyone know how to do that or knows where I can find
that information?

Thanks,

Subject: [Help] LILO doesn't boot from SCSI disk
Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 17:17:56 +0200

Hi all,
I cannot get LILO booting from an SCSI disk. Can you give me some
hints?

This is the situation. I've just installed Linux Red Hat 6.2 on a Dual
Pentium III machine equipped with:
        Mainboard: SUPERMICRO, SUPER P6DBE
SCSI controller: Adaptec SCSI Card 29160
        SCSI disk: Seagate ST318436LW (17.5G)
        IDE disk: Seagate STS320430A (20GB)

The IDE disk is only temporally installed, and it is going to be used
only to hold data, no system files. All the system is installed on the
SCSI disk. This is the partition table (generated with disk druid):
====================
Disk /dev/sda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2233 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 14 2233 17832150 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 14 906 7172991 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 907 1548 5156833+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 1549 1880 2666758+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda8 1881 2174 2361523+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda9 2175 2213 313236 82 Linux swap
/dev/sda10 2214 2233 160618+ 83
Linux --------------------

and this an excerpt from /etc/fstab:
====================
/dev/sda10 / ext2 defaults
1 1
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults
1 2
/dev/sda5 /home ext2 defaults
1 2
/dev/sda6 /usr ext2 defaults
1 2
/dev/sda7 /usr/local ext2 defaults
1 2
/dev/sda8 /var ext2 defaults
1 2
/dev/sda9 swap swap defaults
0 0
====================
So the /boot partition is (/dev/sda1) located at very beginning of the
disk.

The overall installation was straightforward. Only the LILO
installation issued a warning:
"Warning: /dev/sda1 is not on the first disk"

But then, before booting again I changed the BIOS booting sequence
setting SCSI on the first place and IDE on the second. After saving
this, the booting is restarted. The BIOS displays:
"Searching for Boot Record from SCSI..OK"
And then only appears:
"LI"
and it gets frozen.
        According to LILO's User's Guide (pag. 44):
"LI The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot
loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a
geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map
    installer."
Of course, I haven't moved /boob/boot.b. Since the disk is a large one,
I used the "linear" global option in lilo.conf, but no luck. I've also
tried without it, with the same lack of success.

If I install LILO on the IDE disk, it works all right, but I don't like
this solution because of the temporal condition of the disk.

        LILO's version is 21.

I would greatly appreciate any help to get the SCSI disk booting
properly.

        Thanks in advance!
        Cheers!

        Jos Manuel

I have 2 accounts ATTGLOBAL.NET and a TERRA2 (it's Peruvian). I have
sucessfully configured the ATT based upon the info on their web site
writing to the the resolv.conf , options, pap-secrets and the ppp-on &

since my ATT account didn't appear I just added my TERRA2 account info.
And it appears that the RH6.2 ppp controler without mercy overwrote my

So now how do configure for both of them to peacefully coexist?? Can
just write 2 domain names & nameservers to resolv.com such as

domain ATTGLOBAL.Net
nameserver 1.1.1.1 (just an example)
nameserver 1.1.1.2

domain TERRA2
namerserver 2.2.2.2.2
nameserver 2.2.2.2.3

and the same style of duel codes in the other files too??

Yeah, it has one, and you have to mount it to play the stuff. I haven't
yet worked out how to copy (backup of course) one either. I've found a
couple of VCD filesystem creation tools, but they all seem to require
more intelligence / effort than I can muster.

Question is, can XFree86-3.3.6*.rpm that came with RedHat 6.2 be used

will make rpm binary distribution of XFree 3.3.6 work only with RedHat

Upgrading the whole system to RedHat 6.2 is _not_ an option for me at

Q1
Could you suggest me a good VCD/DVD player in Linux?

Q2
When I mount the cdrom by a user account, the directory "/cdrom" still

Is it normal?

If "Yes", how the application "mtv" and "mtvp" (they are a kind of vcd

It appears that you do not have a DHCP network, or you would not need to
set the IP address on your windoze system. Try giving your linux box an
arbitrary IP address (192.168.0.42 for example) and setting the netmask
to 255.255.255.0. Point the Router to 192.168.0.1, and you should be
good to go.

I have had bad luck with mandrake myself... and all my stuff is supposed
to be linux compatable too. It would not recognize any of my devices.

One thing you may be interested in is this: Redhat ships with both KDE
and Gnome, and you can install both during installation by choosing
custom install. I had absolutely no problems with RH 6.2.

good luck!
