Here is a thought, look at http://www.redhat.com for the version they ship.
for hardware support http://www.redhat.com/support/hardware/

And for wild card information http://www.altavista.com/

Try setting it up in /etc/inittab with a respawn....

When you booted off the rescue disk to search the /etc using " ls -la conf*
" did you see a conf.module.bak file which you can cp to conf.modules?
If non exist try " touch conf.module " which creates an empty conf.module
then reboot.

Subject: Hosed install. Techs messed up. Moving /usr?
Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 10:37:48 -0500

I let a local PC dealer setup a dual boot linux /win98 machine for me and it
cost a ton.
And they really goofed up with druid.

They let a 6 gig area of the disk go uninitialized as they thought it would
"grow". It turns out that is only at
install time, not during normal run conditions.

I found out the hard way. Loading Staroffice

So..I zapped the win D drive and made it into a linux partition and mounted
it first as /home
because /home is easier and I can do that.
(I use gnome to rename directories and cannot do that at linux text level)

I got a suggestion to mount instead /usr but /usr has all the xwindows stuff
and gnome and
then I cannot change the names of /nusr (the new usr dir) and /usr.

How does one change directory names aside from inside Gnome / properties?

Thanks

This it taking way too long.

Subject: partition mystery
Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 09:47:09 -0600

I've been using Linux for years and have managed to run up against a new
wall. I installed a 40 gig maxtor drive. I initially set it up with "MAX
BLAST's EZ-Drive" to access all possible space. Since then I have
re-installed my whole system 3 times. My system includes Win98 and Linux.
My drive configuration is usually: Drive one is a 1.5 gig WD drive: hda1 =
primary fat 16 c:/ drive at 256megs with dos system boot files and system
commander. hda2 is a primary 128meg swap partition for linux and hda3 is
primary ext2 /boot for linux to boot from. Drive 2 is a 17 gig Maxtor.
hdb1 is a primary part with D: for windows98, hdb2 is logical and contains
hdb5, hdb6. Which are fat32 for Data archive, Applications and Games
respectivly. Drive 3 is a 4 gig WD that is not currently being used. Drive
4 is a new 40 gig Maxtor. Hdd1 is a primary fat32 10gig for Archive. hdd2
is extended for the remainder of space. Hdd5 is a 10gig ext2 / for linux.
hdd6 is a 10-20 gig ext2 not being used.

Because of problems I removed EZ-Drive from all drives. I reinstalled my
Win98 system and then installed Mandrake 7 Linux using Lilo at the MBR.
After verifing Linux was running correctly I rebooted with a windows98 boot
floppy, and installed System Commander. I have installed win98 and Linux
many times using this configuration without an trouble. During the linux
install I made no changes to Drive 2 (hdb), but after the install hdb drive
partitions had vanished, taking with it my Win98 system. During the first
boot with system commander the screen showed some reference to the EZ-Drive
boot dialogue. I have just reinstalled Win98, I started the linux install
but noticed that linux fdisk shows hdb with the correct partitions but the
file system is ext2!!! Dos fdisk shows this drive to have the proper fat32
file system in place.

My question (finally) is: Can I install linux using linux fdisk to setup
partions with outtouching hdb? (or will fdisk automatically change trhe mbr
to register hdb as containing ext2 filesystems?) Where should I install
lilo? If I cannot install linux safely, what can I do to rescue Drive 2
hdb? I am thinking that EZ-drive still exists on my drives and my bios
registers the drives as LBA but that some how ez-drive rares it's ugly head
and corrupt the mbr.

Any suggestions?

George

The only thing I can add to the excellent other post is to turn off the IDE
drives in your bios. Linux does not need the bios to detect IDE and tries to
use these as the boot drive if they are enabled.

If you have framebuffer support for your graf card,
you should use something like:

        append="video=matrox:vesa:402"

This give that nice cute penguin image on bootup.
NOTE: vga=<value|ask> does not necessarily mean you
have framebuffer support in your kernel. If/when
your consol is messed up after exiting X, try
typing 'reset'.

Ok, looks like Slackware it is. I tried booting the 7.1 boot and root
disks, using mem=128mb no387 and managed to get it to work, then I
remembered that I had a Slackware 4 CD, and install it. To keep from
having to enter the parameters every time I wrote a batch file and use
Loadlin. Since my fastest Linux box prior to this was a P133, I am
astonished by the speed of this PIII 500! Can't wait to get Slak7 and
the Voodoo3 etc. support.
Thank you! I refused to believe that mathco had stroked out, but looks
like you were right, and since Intel chips are pricey, now I dont have
to replace it.

yepper.... doesn't seem to make any difference... it is acting like the
options
_after_ doing the scan aren't available... putting in 0-6 works fine...
(those are
the ones on the initial display on vga=ask

I do get the cute penguin on bootup with just vga=788, etc... but I will
try
the append line, although I would have no idea what to put on it... is there
something in my XConfig that would point to the correct value, or something

Hmm, maybe because he was askingus how to?

"mv" will change directory names, just like it does files. A couple of
warnings though:

-mv will not overite a target directory. "mv /nusr /usr" will create
/usr/nusr/ if /usr already exists.

-DO NOTE simply DELETE /usr, even if /nusr has everything in it already. You
have to be VERY careful with all the dynamic libraries locations listed in
/etc/ld.so.conf or you will find that all of a sudden none of your
executables will work anymore. I just checked my system and "mv," "cp" et
al. link to libraries in "/lib" so you'd probably be okay (though the GUI
stuff in X will definitely not run until you put the X libraries where they
belong and run "ldconfig" as root.

I'm afraid this was a little confusing, so post back with q's if I wasn't
clear.
