'ldconfig -v' command should give you all the info that you need.

I am a new person to linux. After I install the red hat 6.2 in my
computer which already installed Windows ME, the hard disk cannot boot.
After displaying the hardware info in the screen, two letter "LI" appears.
And then nothing happens. I cannot enter linux and window ME now. Please
give some advice to save my computer. Thanks.

What shell are you running?
At least tcsh has the autologout shell variable. Perhaps other login
shells have similar.
And there are daemons that check for idleness and send kill -HUP. And
suspicious looking daemons (like timeoutd or something)?

I agree. And since I'm not the type to copy copyright material, I get
charged for someone else's copying.
That's government for you, though I understand it's far worse over in
Germany, with taxes on things like photo copiers, fax machines,
computers that can do multimedia etc.
I wonder how much of that money actually gets to the artists? It
reminds me of the "tire tax" placed on new tires sold in Ontario. This
tax was supposed to pay for proper disposal of used tires. It's been in
place for over 10 years, but as far as I can tell, not a nickle of it
has been spent on proper tire disposal. Then there are the gas taxes
and licence fees, that far exceed what the government spends on roads.
Yet they claim we have to have toll roads, because the government
doesn't have the money to pay for them. This after telling us for years
that we had higher gas taxes, because we didn't have road tolls.

"which tcpd" (as root)
check your inetd.conf/xinetd.conf for services that are started

Try this:
At the Win box pccity go Control Panel - Network- File & Printer Sharing
and double click that entry. Then Disable <Browse Master> and selct No for

This seemed to work for me.

Try to boot from the cd, enter: linux rescue look at /etc/lilo.conf and
report back.
If u need to boot windows me, boot from a win boot floppy and enter:
fdisk /mbr
This will remove lilo from your mbr.

Help!
I have a dual processor machine with SCSI harddrive running Windows 2000
(there is no data presently on the machine that needs saving). I need to
make the machine dual boot so that I can run either linux or Windows.
I reinstalled windows 2000, and partitioned the disk in two. On the first
partition, it is formatted NTFS and I have installed windows. The other
partition was left unformatted and I planned to install linux 6.2 onto it (I
need to use 6.2 for my application).
Anyway, the mini howto for dual installation of windows and linux has left
me clueless.
Can anyone give me guidance or point me in a direction on how I can install
linux on the other partition so that I will be able to dual boot? From what
I understand, I can't just do a normal install of linux because I will not
be able to install LILO in the normal way.

Hi,
I wondered whether there is a HOWTO or similar about
how to update a distribution via the web. So far I have done it only
with the bootable CD-ROM. Put it in, reboot, and then I follow the
options to update from Redhat 7.0 to 7.1 for example.
I have fast internet access, so how do I proceed to do
the same thing without the CD-ROM?

I do plan on upgrading sooner rather than later and the price at linux
central was good but the shipping overseas cost would make it more expensive
than to buy it locally.

I recently set up my Linux box to be a firewall / router for our internet
traffic. I am running Red Hat Linux v7.1, Kernel 2.4.2-2, and running the
PPPoE client to get access to the internet. I added the following lines to
a script to setup IP Masquerading:
/sbin/ipchains -P forward DENY
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -j MASQ
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
This works fine for things like e-mail, http, and nntp, but I am having
problems with other programs. Most importantly, I can't get VPN clients on
internal workstations to connect to their respective hosts any more. Does
anyone know what changes I need to make through either ipchains or the
pppoe.conf files to get VPN clients to work?
Thanks in advance,

Subject: Need a little help with installing Netatalk: DES Makefile entry
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Mark Johnson)
Date: Mon, 21 May 2001 22:20:24 GMT
I am trying to follow the instructions one
www.anders.com/projects/netatalk. When he says:
Install a DES library if you don't already have one and are planning on
useing encrypted passwords. (If not, comment the DES line out of the
Makefile and skip this step.)
I'm not sure what Makefile file he is refering to since there are several
and i'm not sure what line. I don't see any in the CFLAG or such, and i
don't see where or how the ${DESDIR} entry is getting set.
DESDIR is commented out in the Makefile in the top level directory. I'm
using the installation given in the instructions. I'm running Mandrake
7.2.
Any suggestions?

It used to be: boot from the floppy, instead of installing from cd,
install via ftp or nfs, type in the site, and off you go.

Hi all,
I have a Toshiba Satellite with a Yamaha OPL3-SAx chip. I used to run
RedHat 7.0 and sound worked just fine... I upgraded to RedHat 7.1 to be rid
of USB problems, it's terrific now except that my sound has stopped
working! I had performed a fresh install (due to very tight disk space
limitations), so I went to run sndconfig to reconfigure sound. It didn't
detect via PnP, so I selected it, and entered all the correct settings
(same as my Lose98 partition, same as my previous RH 7.0 install). I got
this error that said "error accessing /dev/audio". What could that be?
I also noticed some "can't find module sound-slot-0" errors, likewise
sound-services-{some number}. I'm not why these modules aren't present or
if it matters.
Any help on this problem would be very sincerely appreciated!

jim,
I may not understand exactly what you've done and what you know so
please don't be insulted...
If I DO understand, you've put redhat right on top of the ME
partition. You can't do this unless you go through some tricky steps
to run a special file system.
I guess the big question is... did you make a partition for redhat and
install it there? If not, you may be at a point where you're going to
have to flatten the hard disk and start over with both OS's. This
would include making sure there are partitions for ME and partitions
for redhat. Then you'd have to reinstall both.
Sorry, I'm sure this isn't what you wanted to hear.
