Subject: Possible display problem during installation of RH6.2 on a notebook
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 23:17:12 +1000
When I'm installing RH6.2 on my Mitac Notebook, the setup would proceed
to the language selection and after English is selected, the screen will
suddenly blank out with around 8-10 vertical blue lines running across
the screen. I suspect that the setup has not froze, because hitting the
F12 key would trigger some CDROM activity (I'm installing from CD), but
nothing would show up on the screen... And I've tried graphical, text,
expert modes and none of them will get pass through the language
selection.
The Mitac notebook spec is:
AMD K6-2 333
430TX
Trident 96XX/938XX 2MB
64MB RAM
If anyone knows how to solve the problem, it'll be greatly appreciated.
Peter

You mean like... kdm? Depending on distro of course, Mdk, for instance,
sets up kdm to let you choose any of several WMs when logging in.
And KDE, Gnome and Enlightenment all provide easy graphical interfaces for
setting up menus and starting apps without "direct editing".

Copy the CD onto your hard-drive and intsall it from there.

Enable "Use real mode APM bios call to power off" in your kernel config,
and you should be OK :)

You should run "make clean" before "make bzImage" :) Although this will
probably not remove the unresolved symbol messages.

this is a losing battle. microsoft doesn't know how to keep time.
they try to adjust the hardware clock for daylight savings. if you
have two operating systems trying to play this game you can easily see
how losing it really is. i let windows think i live in greenwich
england without daylight savings time.

I was thinking the same thing; plus which a drop from 256 Mb to 128 has

Or even just run two X servers with e.g. gdm, log in with one setup in one
(ctrl+alt+f7, say) and log in with another setup in t'other (eg with
ctrl+alt+f8). Been there, done that... quite enjoyed it, too...

What about those of us who don't give a disemboweled pigeon for competing?
I use linux because I like it, because I can configure it, because it's
stable, it does what I want it to do, you name it. But if other OSs want to
set themselves up as "competition", let them lose by all means.
> there would be a movement to write setup programs that allow users to

Setup programs? For goodness' sake, the linux world is still cluttered with
arguing the toss over installers, RH's or Mandrake's (with most of the
press putting Debian in the "Related Companies" box, *spit*).
I'm not interested in "the installer". I want to be able to do what I want
with it *after* installing it - in some cases, developing stuff, installing
more toys, reading Gnus.. in short, it's use not installation, that counts.

You should probably try to get your money back if they're
really as incompotent as you've hinted at.
Anyway, if you're just wanting to rename files and
directories, use `mv`. For example:
$ ls -F
olddirname/
$ mv olddirname newdirname
$ ls -F
newdirname/
You can also use the `man` or `info` commands to look at the
documentation for other commands, such as `mv`. (eg - `man mv` will
display the manual for `mv`)
That said, I don't really understand what you're trying to
do. Well, I understand up to where you mounted the old D drive as
/home. What happened to the original /home? And why would you mount
the new partition as /usr? That doesn't sound like such a good idea.
If you really want those 6 gigs used for every day stuff, you might as
well just reinstall. Redhat's latest releases make the install rather
painless. Plus, you'll learn a lot more about Linux (which is, I
assume, what you want to do? :) by installing yourself.

Seems I can configure my modem using the KPPP tool, and I can connect to the

I can also run sndconfig from a console, and get my SoundBlaster AWE64
working....the thing is, is after I configure my soundcard, my modem will
not work anymore...I get the message "The modem is busy"
I have tried to configure the soundcard first, but then I cannot configure
the modem...which by the way is a US Robotics 56K V90 Internal.
My modem is on COM1.....dev/ttyS0
Has anyone else experienced this before, and know a way to make both pieces
