who told you this? i've never heard of it before. sound like a M$ zealot
fluffing the neg hype run. linux will not mess up your hardware unless
you give it wrong settings and this is really only for the monitor/video
settings. sure hd's can be a pain but i've never heard of
permanent damage from an os. it's almost always human error. most stuff
just won't work with the wrong settings but if you give refresh rates to
high for you crt you could kill it. this is only easy to do if you're
not very smart or too lazy to research your hardware for its settings
which i guess is one and the same.

the other post listed plenty of sites for ya to cheq out...keep an eye
on ng's. and be leery of heavy books with lotsa pages...you usually end
up using info off the web. good luck. be leery of irc help cuz some
can be rude to newbies. as if they, like everyone, weren't a newbie at
some point. they've got a point to some degree, i mean, the moment
you've got a problem don't ask until you've tried solutions this way
the easiest stuff isn't being rehashed all the time. in other words, rtfm

Depends on what you're testing.

Neither Linux nor Windows can schedule a single thread to more than one
processor. So a dual-processor system will not show much difference
from a single-processor system, unless your test program is running
multiple threads/processes at once.

You might not have to do anything except keep the xxx part
of System.map.xxx diferent so that they don't get overwriten. The file
map in /boot is for the hardware geometry of the harddrive.
I have a a few kernels running and it seems that the kernel looks
for the version info in the System.map files.

On the other hand, had Christopher released GnomoVision under the BSD
license, Be would already be allowed to include GnomoVision in their boxed
sets of BeOS under a proprietary license without paying him a penny or
revealing the source to their enhancements to him or anyone else.

The fact that the GPL does not permit this seems to be what enrages the BSD
trolls: they are evidently offended that we are not willing to make them a
gift of unlimited rights to our code.

You must tell sendmail to disguise your outbound mail, so it looks
like it's coming from a domain that exists. Eg. cs.fsu.edu or
an other domain you use in your mailadress.

Edit your sendmail.cf file

...

  # who I masquerade as (null for no masquerading) (see also $=M)
  DMcs.fsu.edu
  Djcs.fsu.edu

...

It's also a good thing to use an accountname on your linuxbox that is
corresponding with your emailadress, eg. "bismuti" to ensure that
responses get through.

With HFS in the kernel I have been able to mount HFS floppy discs here and
read data from them.

I would suggest doing a mount -t hfs /dev/hdX /mnt/mac

or similar and copying the files direct from the disc as would any other.

In an attempt to get my LPC3-TX Ethernet card working I'm having to go thru'
all sorts of minefields. Part of the makefile supplied uses gcc ????. I
have found various gcc-.... .rpm files on my cdrom but when I copied
gcc.2.95.2-3mdk.i586.rpm to /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i586 and then:

rpm -i gcc-2.95.2-3mdk.i586.rpm it failed reporting:

error: failed dependencies:
        binutils >= 2.9.1.0.25 is needed by gcc-2.95.2-3mdk

and guess what - I can't see this on my cdrom anywhere ???
Please put me out of my misery.
Also, I'm getting tired of having to constantly retype stuff I typed on just
the line before when it needs just a little change. Is there anyway to
recall the last command in the console - sort of like F1 / F3 in DOS where
F1 allows the same char to be typed and F3 brings the whole of the last
command back?!

1) I am not a troll. I am posting my honest beliefs, just as you are.

2) I am not offended that you are unwilling to grant unlimited rights in

There might be enough improvement (just) to justify 7.0 but not to
justify the
huge price increase. The professional edition will be bascically the
same as the current 6.4 in terms of content i.e 1500+ applications on 6
CDs but from what I can gather is going to cost more than twice the
price thats very bad news.

After installing redhat 6.2 from cdrom on an smp box,

copying the bzImage to replace the image in /boot
copying the /usr/src/linux/System.map to /boot

I get error messages for

How do I fix it?

There's a nice way to do this "by hand": Boot up Linux. Then you have to get
the lilo into a file done by typing: dd if=/dev/<where you installed lilo>
bs=512 count=1 of=bootsect.lin
Now copy bootsect.lin to the drive where boot.ini is located. Open the file
boot.ini with an editor and append the following line:
<dos path>\bootsect.lin=Linux
dos path means the path of the drive where boot.ini is located. The Win2000
boot loader should now be able to boot directly into linux when you choose
the option "Linux".
But how you get the Win2000 boot loader to work, I can't tell you. Sorry.
Hate Windows.

Hope to have helped

Hello,

I have recently installed Red Hat 6.2 on my
computer. Then it came the time to setup the
sound devices. sndconfig did a good job as to
detecting the correct hardware, a CMI 8738
[/C3DX] PCI audio device. However, no sound
has ever been heard from the sound boxes.
sndconfig said it would perform a sound test
but no sound ever echoed from the multimedia
speakers. What's wrong? What to do? Can't RH
6.2 work with PCI devices?

Yet another question: during the install, I
selected a US keyboard with "deadkeys", as
I wanted accent support for my texts in
Portuguese. There was a text box to test the
accents, and they worked fine. But now that
RH is installed, no one of the text editors I
have yields neither accents on the vowels (or
any other character) nor cedils. I tried to
select a US-Latin keyboard from kbdconfig,
but that choice was of no use. What to do in
this case?

Any help will be much appreciated. Thank
you!

Are you running (under) X? The DISPLAY environment variable should be set
automatically if you are. (It should have a value like ":0.0".) If a
program requires $DISPLAY, it probably requires X.

The "environment" is a set of variables (and values) that are passed on
from programs (like shells) to other programs ("applications") that they
start up. If you start your program from a shell, then (assuming bash,
zsh, or the like) you can set environment variables using the syntax
$ export VARIABLE=value
(note, that's "VARIABLE", not "$VARIABLE"). If you want it set all the
time, you put that line (without the "$" prompt, of course) in the
appropriate shell startup file.

(In tcsh, the syntax is
% setenv VARIABLE value
.)

That's http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/ .
You may also be interested in http://www.linux-thinkpad.org/ , and

Many built-in modems are Windows-only devices. This may be the case with
Thinkpads.

That is probably fine. The Trackpoint is a PS/2 device.

If you _want_ a smaller one, that is the way to get it. You may _have_ to
recompile the kernel to get support for certain things, like APM.

this always happens. many people say that the united states of
america is a free country yet there are many things which are
illegal. you can't just go around killing people wantonly. you
cannot use many drugs. the first infringes upon other people's
freedom. the second, however, does not yet it is still forbidden.
free doesn't necessarily mean anarchy.

Subject: Newbie sound problem
Date: Wed, 2 Aug 2000 14:56:25 -0400

Ive installed caldera open linux 2.2 on my computer and now im trying to
configure sound. My soundcard is a ensoniq soundscape vivo. My problem is I
do not know the cards I/O address. IRQ or DMA setting and i do not have
windows so I cant use device manager to find them out. Is there a way to
find these values by looking at the motherboard? If not where do I find
them. The manuals for the sound card and motherboard are no help at all.

thanks

Steve
