I downloaded it and had someone burn it with Adaptec Easy CD Creator.
Worked like a charm. Slackware installed fine on a third hard drive
in my machine; had no problems booting from the CD.

I don't think that you can do such type of installations. You can try
either from the net by ftp or through CD.

Hello:

I am using a Sound Blaster 16 ISA sound card under Debian 2.2 (Potato).

All the sound modules appear to load without error, including sb.o, IRQ
settings and all.

However, there simply isn't any sound. Simple as that.

The sound card works very well under Window$ 98.

Any hints as to what to check out would be appreciated.

This message concerns anyone who may be considering getting DSL service
in the near future.
-
I strongly urge you to spend some time in COMP.DCOM.XDSL before you chose
a provider. If you do, it will become immediately apparent that Verizon,
or any of the BabyBells are clearly the worst choices.
-
The Internet is littered with consumer horror stories from people who failed
to do any research before signing-up for DSL. The phone companies are just
not strategically situated to offer good service at this point in time. Too
many union constraints... nightmarish bureaucracy... antiquated corporate
culture... conflicting priorities - and then list goes on and on. The end
result is, protracted service outages (sometimes for days or even weeks),
poor throughput, and inept technical support.
-
Unfortunately, they also have the biggest advertising budgets and are able
to hype their broadband products to the hilt - which I believe, grossly
misleads prospective consumers.
-
Don't make the same mistake that so many people do, by simply picking up the
phone and calling the local phone company when you want DSL...

But, to back up a bit, are you sure ESS1868 is compiled into your kernel?
If not, you need it as a module. If it already exists in your basic
installation you are lucky. I am not up-to-date as to the latest
"popular" distros (I use Debian now), but when I was using my ESS1868, I
recall having to recompile my kernel to get it going.

Secondly, you need to know your settings. Isapnptools are only good for
plug-and-play equipment. Running isapnp still may work, but I recall I
needed to really message things to get it to go. From what I have seen
regarding sound support in the kernel, it seems that the kernel is now
bettter equipped to handle ESS1868 sound cards.

I would have thought that a better application to confgiure your sound
under Mandrake would be "sndconfig". It's all interactive, and if you
don't like your previous settings, you can just cycle through the text
interfaces over again until you get it right. since it is self-testing.
That means you need to be sure your speakers are hooked up and switched
on at the time. I would forget isapnptools until you give that
application a go. It was originally part of RedHat, but I can't see
Mandrake being a terribly different distro.

If you look at "my_computer" >properties>performance you may see that you
are now using 16 bit compatibility on the hard disk. If so:
this seems a problem in the PCI controller -- Linux to work must set
Serialize IDE. AND windows to work with 32 bit drivers must NOT set
Serialize.

Look at regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\VXD\IOS

if there is a key called NOIDE -- its the problem. remove it, shut down,
Power OFF! WAIT then reboot windows. This is taken from a Microsoft
advisory.

whole fat16/fat32 file system (including the dos 6.22 C: drive) and I
can't find boot.ini. But, when I boot the system, here comes the boot

If there are no errors loading modules and using player software and you
are sure that everything is properly configured, one thing that is worth
checking is that your mixer settings are ok. (the volume level could be set
to zero).
Load the sound module in conf.modules with the following options:

options sound dma_buffsize=65536 && /usr/bin/setmixer igain 0 ogain 0 vol
75

(this is from the sound-HOWTO:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO-6.html#ss6.31 , check it out
before using..=)

I have the same card as you and every time the module was loaded, volume
was too silent. Worked fine for my redhat box having this problem.

Could help...

My first Linux installation (0.9 something) was on an old (even then)
Compaq Desqpro 386-25 with 13 MB :-) I had that running X reasonably
happily using fvwm as the window manager. Replacing the CPU with the
Cyrix 486-50 upgrade chip made it seem to fly. Go for it - but don't
waste your time with KDE or Gnome - Micro$oft lookalike bloatware.

I consider KVM's to be somewhat black-art. It's very odd that the kbd
still works, but the mouse does not. I had thought PS/2 kbds and mice
were simply wired in parallel across the PS/2 "bus". Perhaps either
the mouse or the kbd is funny. Have you tried different brands?

The best way to emulate a mouse is not to have one! Since I don't
use X/gpm much, I don't miss them. Each of my machines has it's own
kbd to avoid PS/2 hot plugging. But my single monitor has an extention
cable and I _do_ hot plug the monitor. AFAIK, this is acceptable
since the monitors take analog signals which shouldn't cause the
problems that digital signals cause.
