Turn on the debugging option in lpd.
Look in man lpd for more info.
Trace the debugging output to find the problem.

Subject: BIOS Flash???
Date: Thu, 03 Aug 2000 17:14:23 GMT

Has anyone flashed their BIOS under Linux? For my motherboard, it only
gives directions for Windows and DOS. It says to bootup the OS, press
<shift><F5> when it verifies DMI information. Then it says to make a
bootable floppy, remove config.sys and autoexec.bat files. Then add the
BIOS flash and utility and reboot with the disk. My question is, do I
need to worry about any memory management utility residing in memory
after bootup with Linux (hence the <shift><F5>)? Also, can I just use a
windows bootable disk with those two programs removed to flash the BIOS.
Will it mess up anything since the OS is Linux. I would imagine it
would, but I'm not taking any chances. Thanks for any help!

Hi
I have a Motorola PowerStackII and wanted to install Linux.
Tried to install suse 6.4, but their boot image does not recognize my
scsi drive. So I have used LinuxPPC boot loader. After that I have
manage to install suse6.4

But now the same problem with booting. Suse boot loader does not work
and LinuxPPC boot loader works but has a different version number so it
does not load the modules. Hence the ethernet card does not work.

I have tried to recompile suse but with no luck. Also tried yellowdog
distribution. Any one has any idea? Please let me know.

Hi all

I'm new with vim and I'm using it for C programming. I like the feature with
indenting after I enter a '{' sign. However, its indenting 8 spaces at a
time. I would like to change the indenting to 3 spaces. I also realize that
the 8 space indenting is the same as the tab space. I don't really want to
change the tab space, just be able to let the editor indent 3 spaces after
the '{' bracket.
Thanks

Depends on what you mean by "run on". As in "can it read them" the answer is
yes - on my system

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/win -t vfat

after

mkdir /mnt/win

works just fine (do mkdir /mnt/win ONCE only!) for reading and writing in
the "windows part" of my HDD.

If you mean "run on" such as "execute from / or boot from" the answer as far
as I know is no - Linux must boot from a native Linux partition formatted as
an Ext2. (Right?)

What do you mean you "hard drive crashed"? Do you mean you cannot get into
Windows anymore, you can only get Linux, or you get LILO: and nothing
happens? Or does it just hang?

Hi all,
Help! Redhat6.2's PPP Dialer doesn't recognise my modem!
Tried using a working Debian2.1 pppconfig with pon/poff, but chat

Here's some more detail with /dev/ttyS*, ifconfig -a, and netstat -a, and
ping.

I'd hate to downgrade back to RH6.0, or Debian2.1, or Slackware4.0 (all of
these dial out using chat just fine), just to get chat to work, since this
box is going away as a birthday gift once RH6.2 can dial the modem. This is
a dual boot system with /dev/hda1: Windows98 and /dev/hda3: RedHat6.2.

Any help is appreciated!

I would say that most definitions of "communism" would
includes Marxism. Either way is perfectly reasonable to use Marx's
definitions as a base line, for the simple reason that his ideas are
explicitly stated where as communism with a small "c" does not.

I must have replied via email:

Driveimage is a "backup" application that creates a compressed "image" of
a partition be it dos, fat32 or linux. (or others). For my 3gb linux
partition, it took up about 1gb backed up to another drive and 10 minutes.
Restoration was also about 10 minutes and without any problem. I use
V2.02. I think it's at the PartitionMagic site.

AFAIK NT filesystem support is not compiled by default, you have to enable
it during make config (paremeter CONFIG_NTFS_FS). I've been using the
module for a couple of months on a NT workstation installation without
problems.

The worst part is that there is only support for reading those filesystems,
writing to them can yield unexpected results.

Maybe your system is configure not to allow a simgle process to allocate all
of your memory, for security reasons. Think of the loop you describe as a
bug inside a compiled program: when execution reaches this point, the whole
memory is allocated and the system is likely to run out of memory and hang.

There is a command and/or set of files where you can specify those memory,
i-node and process limits on a per-user basis. The command is ulimit and the
files are under /etc/security, at least on my Red Hat system.

I'm going to guess that the start up scripts are not a) bringing up the network
correctly or b) not startingthe fw services correctly. Check your start-up
files in /etc/rc.d and make sure there is nothing wrong with the scripts.

Most important first step:
Look into why the machine is rebooting. It's prob. because of some seg fault or
something and that MUST be taken care of. Check the logs in /var/log and see if
anything points you in the correct direction. Finding out why the machine
reboots is the most important part of trouble shooting this. A linux machine
should NEVER just reboot without a reason.

No. He is asking about a UMSDOS filesystem, which is a filesystem completely
conatined in a contiguous file on your DOS/Windows filesystem. This is not
the same thing as an msdos/vfat file system, which you seem to be describing here.

I think Corel linux, and maybe Slackware (my first Linux 7 years ago was a
Slackware UMSDOS install) support this. I'm pretty sure Redhat DOES NOT.

Personally I don't think it is really easier. After a couple months after doing
this myself (granted, a long time ago), my UMSDOS partition mysteriously got
corrupted and I had to reinstall. The only thing that is really easier is
deleting linux, but who would want to do that? ;-)

Then it did same, but after I supply root pw, it just vanishes.

I then tried "ifup ppp0" -- it doens't find it for non-root, and the only way I
can get ppp going is via "ifup ppp0" as root, then switching to a different
user in a different terminal.

I ahve tried all kinds of things with permissions and suids for consolehelper /

Any answers will be appreciated. I'm about ready to do the "Windows-style

I think you got it slightly wrong: what the shift-f5 does when you boot
windoze is get you in dos mode; all the flash utilities I've ever seen
only work in plain dos, and there is a reason for that: it's a real-mode
non-multitasking systen, and since the flash process is so critical, you
wouldn't want another concurrent program grab the system resources at
the wrong time, would you?
What you want to do is: make a _dos_ bootable floppy, with nothing else
on it than io.sys, msdos.sys and command.com, plus your bios flasher and
bios binary image, as per instructions from your motherboard
manufacturer, and boot from this floppy; do the flash, then reboot.
Linux won't be affected the least bit, unless, of course, the flash
process goes wrong :(( .

Read the man page for "patch" (man patch).
