Trio isn't ViRGE. Load the SVGA drivers for both and you'll do OK,
at least to get started.  Be careful about the monitor settings, though;
the S3 cards that we've used here have a bad habit of letting you set
higher pixel rates than the RAMDAC can handle, especially at high color
depths. If you set a low refresh rate you may see that blank screen light
up.

At a couple of bucks from CheapBytes I'd absolutely advise RH6.2; it's
just more polished and has numerous small but pleasant improvements.
Not that that'll necessarily fix everything, mind. Are you trying to
do an upgrade or a new install? (My own preference is to do a fresh
install and then run a script that I have that reprises all of my
customization. It's probably not any easier but the documetation is
good to have just in case.)

tcpdump - maybe it'll do what you want already; otherwise the source is
pretty straightforward.

Subject: USR 56K (id 5685) does not respont to init string
Date: Sat, 05 Aug 2000 04:08:30 GMT

Problem: model 5685 USR voice fax modem does not respond to
any init string. kppp, gnome ppp, chat, whatever just sits
there waiting for OK. I can force a call using the minicom
dialer, but the response from the modem is extremely slow -
basically not usable. Also, modem response to ATI* commands
will only display if I hold the enter key down while one
character at a time slowly gets displayed. The ati
responses display is a mirrored view (you have to read the
line backwards).

I have verified at
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/20000803a.html that my modem is
an isa pnp modem, NOT a winmodem.

BIOS is configured with com1 at 3e8, irq4. I also tried 3f8
- same result.
PNP OS set to NO. Makes no difference if I set it to YES.
Setserial run with /dev/ttysS02 UART 16550A
ISAPNP executed.
Serial driver is compiled into the kernel - 2.2.16
In addition to the ATZ init string, I tried
AT&F1E0Q0V1&C1&D2S0=0 which is used in NT5.
I could not find any irq conflicts. ANy suggestions?

if you are assigned an ip number, why aren't manually configuring w/netcfg? If
windows runs fine, then run "winipcfg" write down all the info, check your
network settings on your ethernet card (again write down everything, don't
commit anything to memory)

Not exactly sure how your cable provider works things but to use Netscape for
your mail, use the ip number of the mail server in your pop and stmp settings.
All other info should be exactly like it is in windows. At least this works for
me using Intermedia@Home

Date: Sat, 05 Aug 2000 04:35:45 GMT

I just installed 7.1.

I already have running: NT, '95, Slackware 3.5. All on a single
hub, all in a 192.168.2.x network.

>From 7.1, I type FTP <3.5 box>... it says connected, then it hangs
CTRL-C doesn't even do anything.
>From WIN NT, I FTP to <3.5 box>, everything is fine.

>From WIN NT I ftp to <7.1 box>, it hangs until timeout.

In _ALL_ cases, ftp says "Connected to blah-blah" but stops there,
and doesn't show the splash screen.

In short, I can't FTP into or out of the new box., but it does say
that connections are made.

The ..log/messages file just shows me:
FTP Connection from 192.168.2.1...
Timeout on 192.168.2.1 Dropped...
(i.e. It doesn't actually show me anything useful)

Yes, I can telnet in/out, ping, and samba is working.

I am finding this rather annoying. Can ANYONE shed some light
on this?

Subject: ppp server on redhat 6.1
Date: Sat, 05 Aug 2000 12:43:58 +0800

Hi all,

I have Redhat 6.1 that is connected to the internet so it has a
default gateway already. I want to set up a ppp server on this
computer so that I can dial in from home. Following the ppp howto
I get the following in my /var/log/messages when testing as a client:

Aug 5 12:23:41 jet pppd[23289]: By default the remote system is
required to authenticate itself
Aug 5 12:23:41 jet pppd[23289]: (because this system has a default
route to the internet)
Aug 5 12:23:41 jet pppd[23289]: but I couldn't find any suitable secret
(password) for it to use to do so.
Aug 5 12:23:41 jet pppd[23289]: (None of the available passwords would
let it use an IP address.)

wvdial connects to my isp and provides a ppp0 OK. Any suggestions
welcome.

Also in the ppp howto it says that I must have ip fowarding support
to work as a server. I'm using kernel 2.2.16 and cannot see the
ip fowarding setting anywhere.

Thanks,
Andrew Wai

Thank you for your suggestions. I have tried but it failed. I have
another way to solve and want to share my experience.

Four partitions were created by using fdisk in RedHat 6.2. hda1 (4GB)
was FAT16 but unformatted; hda2 (16MB) => /boot; hda3 (~15GB) => /; and
hda4 => swap (125MB).

Linux was installed first in the last partitions. lilo was installed in
MBR without problem. Then hda1 was formatted by MSDos 6.22 to FAT16 with
system file (don't use Win98 because NT can't be installed). After
reboot, the computer booted to Linux. The lilo.conf was modified by
adding:
other=/dev/hda1
table=/dev/hda
label=NT

Unfortunately, you can't boot into dos although you selected 'NT'. But,
forget it. The NT was installed from booting the NT CD-ROM. FAT16 was
then converted to NTFS. After the first stage of installation, the
computer was reboot. Again, it went to Linux. Many 00 01 or LI was
displayed if you selected 'NT', because (I think) the boot image didn't
match to the lilo.conf. Run lilo again to take the new boot information
in hda1. Then reboot, you can boot into NT's OS loader by selecting
'NT'. Great! It works!!

Other problems:
1) I can't make a partition for NT >4GB, (say 8GB, I've tried).
2) When I made another FAT16 partition, NT won't be installed and it
warned that the partition was damaged although these are under 1024 cyl.

as Linux seems to be a very good system with security, I would like to see
the permissions and group structure

Extremely slow usually = mismatched or confliciting IRQ

       addr IRQ dev
COM1 : 3f8 4 ttyS0
COM2: 2f8 3 ttyS1
COM3: 3e8 4 ttyS2
COM4: 2e8 3 ttyS3

Make sure you've got your choices matched up correctly and are using
each IRQ only once, including on-board serial ports. If you need to
use COM3 for the modem because you already have COM1 & COM2, you can
allocate another IRQ (e.g. 5) if you don't have a sound card on IRQ 5.

Hi.

I've been out of the Linux loop for a while, so I cannot
comment on a new version of LILO.

As for downloading distributions and burning them onto Cd's
there are a few forms. Some ( such as Debian/GNU ) provide ISO
boot images that you download and burn onto CD to get bootable
CD's. Others provide binary images of the distribution ( which
require you to build boot disks or copy files to a native partition
in order to do the install ). Finally there are pure source ones
that are only useful to you if you have an existing system
capable of compiling.

     Try www.linux.org, www.kernel.org or www.tux.org for
access to distributions as well as instructions for building CD's.

     Hope this helps,

     James.
