I have the telnet binary on my machine. In fact, I can telnet to a port
like 25 and get in (but obviously no login prompt). Is there more to a
telnet package than just the telnet executable?

Where can I find the default mc file that Redhat used to create their cf
file?

Thanks.

Many thanks for reply - here is the sequence of events:

1. Copied alsa-driver-0.5.10b.tar.bz2 to /usr/src
2. Extracted with tar -Ixvf - no apparent problems
3. Entered directory alsa-driver-0.5.10b
4. Ran ./configure - no apparent problems, however config.log threw up these
lines:
configure 1441:51: /usr/src/linux/include/linux/autoconf.h: No such file or
directory
configure 1478:51: /usr/src/linux/include/linux/autoconf.h: No such file or

configure 1618:51: /usr/src/linux/include/linux/autoconf.h: No such file or
directory
configure 1726:51: /usr/src/linux/include/linux/autoconf.h: No such file or
directory
5. Ran make - got approximately 60 error messages relating to isapnp - for
example "isapnp.c: In function 'isapnp_match_card': isapnp.c:1247:
dreferencing poiner to incomplete type"
6. Ran make install - again got a whole load of messages relating to isapnp
7. ran ./snddevices
8. Could not edit /etc/conf.modules - it doesn't exist.
9. ran modprobe card-cs4281 - got folllowing message
/etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.16-22/modules.dep
modprobe: Can't locate card-cs4281

I repeated the above starting with ./configure --with-isapnp=no but got the
same result.

Download rp-pppoe and rp-pppor-gui.

I have earthlink DSL and I used to use dial in and pppd.

I played around a lot with my machine to get DSL working but after all
that hassle, I realized all I had to do was to download the mentioned
rpm packages, run tkpppoe, configure the settings (be careful about how
you set your login information as the names used in the GUI to ask for
this information are not so obvious, IMO), and then say connect. Of
course you have to configure your eth0 (or eth1, or ...) to use DHCP and
not to connect on boot. If you have any problems, look in
/var/log/system to see what error messages you get upon trying to
connect. What's important to know is that pppoe just replaces your usual
pppd, and it even uses your /etc/ppp/ip-down and /etc/ppp/ip-up scripts.
Its all very seamless.

Here's my rp-pppoe config file.

Good luck.

Ok, I figured it out by posting the same basic thing to the
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
There's a few responses to it now, so I figured that'd be better than
just posting them. I've posted one of the responses I got here, though,
since it doesn't show up on the list.

site: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg68209.html
This is my original post. It has the follow-up link on it.

Here's the other response I got:
<quote>
Nathan,

Mandrake sometimes has a bit of a problem handling Promise cards. To
get around this problem, you need to pass "ide2=noautotune" at boot
time. (without the quotes!) To do this, when the comp first boots off
the LM install CD, press f1 when prompted. At the prompt, type
"linux ide2=noautotune". It should boot normally, but skipping these
lines:

ide1 at 0x170-0x177, 0x376 on irq 15
ide2 at 0x1420-0x1427, 0x1416 on irq10

It seems odd to me that you are having this problem as my comp has this
problem with two hard drives attahced, not one. In any case, you will
also have to include "ide2=noautotune" in your lilo.conf if you use lilo
or menu.lst if you use grub to avoid having to type it in at every
boot. This should get things working for you.

I should warn you though. Even if you get it installed, the kernel in
8.0 that gets installed will probably not boot. The kernel is
incorrectly optioned so it will not boot off a promise card. (And they
got it right in the CD kernel!) The kernel may need a recompile. If it
works right off for you, I would be happy to know! Here are a couple
links about this.

http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=832&lang=en
http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=868&lang=en

I have not tried these though, so I can't help you here. I don't want
to rain on your parade too much though. LM 7.2 is solid as a rock and
works great for me!

David
</quote>

I've got it installed now, but am still trying to get it running. I think
that between this e-mail and the follow-up on the e-mail archives, I'll
actually get it booted up. I'll let you know.

Not exactly the power of Emacs, but it certainly does most of what is
needed for programming work - syntax highlighting, etc. Try FTE. It
should be available for most distributions. I use it under Linux, OS/2

Have a look in the c:\linux directory for the kernel image. Then modify
the linux.bat file to point to the image, full path. While you're in
there, make sure that root points to /dev/hda1 (or as appropriate).

On a recent install of ZipSlack, I noted that the linux.bat file pointed
to an SCSI device by default, so an EIDE device would not fire up with
the stock settings.

HELP!

I have an HP/Colorado 4/8 GB Travan-3 tape drive in a newly constructed
RedHat Linux 7.1 system. The tape drive is currently configured as
/dev/hdd and I have /dev/tape linked to /dev/ht0. (Or is that /dev/ht0
linked to /dev/tape...) I am trying to restore files from a backup made
on another system. That system had no problem writing to the same drive
(it was moved from the old system to the new). mt commands appear to
work fine. E.g., I can retension the tape with 'mt retension'.
However, tar can't read from the drive. I get the following error
messages when I try:

===========================================
[root@c1125351-a backup]# tar -xzf /dev/tape
tar (child): /dev/tape: Cannot read: Input/output error
<...snip...>
[root@c1125351-a backup]#
===========================================

If I look in /var/log/messages, I see this:

===========================================
May 29 11:01:26 c1125351-a kernel: ide-tape: Reached idetape_chrdev_open

May 29 11:01:26 c1125351-a kernel: ide-tape: ht0: I/O error, pc = 8,
key =  5, asc = 2c, ascq =  0
===========================================

I remember having the same problem with the same error/log messages when
I initially got the drive going in the original system. Unfortunately,
I can't for the life of me remember what I did to resolve the problem
the first time. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am at a similar point under RedHat 7.1, and have seen that same error. I
have so far traced it to the fact that "configure" has provision for command
line parameter indicating the location of the "include" directory, but
doesn't seem to use it. Under my RH 7.1 configuration (assuming 7.0 is
similar), the "include" files are NOT in '/usr/src/linux/include/linux',
they are in '/usr/src/include' (IIRC). I am currently trying to hack
"configure" source to actually use the command line input for the "include"
directory location. You might try this, too.

No. It's in the telnet-server package from the CD (I believe it is not

If you want to edit the sendmail.cf manuall, just find the line:

O DaemonPortOptions=Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA

and change it to:

O DaemonPortOptions=Port=smtp,Addr=0.0.0.0, Name=MTA

and do a 'service sendmail restart'. Now sendmail should listen on all

DO you have packet filter (CONFIG_PACKET) and socket filtering
(CONFIG_FILTER) in your kernel? dhcpd needs them.

Hello,

I'm running Epox 8KTA3 (750 MHz Athlon) and only had problems so far,
I bought the some good RAM (256 MB 133MHz).

Running SuSE Linux 7.0, I can't boot from SuSE 7.1 inst CD with kernel
2.4...:-(

OK, I thought who really needs this shinny new distro, but I couldn't
even compile modutils/binutils the machine just locks up and reboots,
nothing gets logged to give any hint...:-(

The machine hasn't reached any more uptime then 10 d, that's absolutely
not
what I'm used to with Linux. It just reboots randomly.

Sadly, I bought the parts online, half was broken, and it took them
over a month to deliver working parts...

I'll buy a new mobo as soon as I can, anyone some hints what to get, it
should have 1xAGP, >= 5 PCI slots and min. 1 ISA slot.

-o wsize=8192,rsize=8192 when using the nfs server installation option.
I currently have been able to mount a directory and kick the hdparm
command in from commandline before installing which is a major major
boost. Advise would be appreciated.
