This is interesting, I have been trying to recompile linux kernel 2.2.16
under several distros - corel, debian, slackware, redhat. everything
seems fine until i do 'make dep ; make clean ; make zlilo'. during make
zlilo, i get the following error and i can't seem to find anyhelp in the
irc channels or find the cause:

make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.2.16/arch/i386/boot'
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/include -E -traditional
-DSVGA_MODE=NORMAL_VGA bootsect.S -o bootsect.s
as86 -0 -a -o bootsect.o bootsect.s

make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.2.16/arch/i386/boot'
make: *** [zlilo] Error 2
:/usr/src/linux#

Am I doing something wrong or not install something? I've never had this
happen in past kernels.

thanks in advance,

I've been thinking about this, and I think I've got a solution that
doesn't require extensions. Maybe.

You have a directory tree; you want one group (admin) to have rw access,
another (users) to have r access, and everyone else no access.

Try this:

1. create a group (call it both) in /etc/group which has two members,
the admin group and the users group.

2. put the directory tree under a directory which has owner access set
to whatever for root, group access set to r-x for both, and other access
set to ---.

3. in the tree itself, set all files to rw access for group admin, and r
only for other.

Since the only "other" (ie, non admin) users who can see the tree are in
group user, they'll have read access; admins will have rw.

Root should probably be owner for all the directories in the tree, at
least.

If it works, let me know. :-)

Hi All,
Thought I'd reply to this post.
I'm using Win98 NT 4 Sp6 Win2k Sp1, RedHat linux 6.2. Never gotten Win98 to
work properly.
Your goal of saving a little hd space is ok, but must be balanced with other
goals you might not think of during installation time.
Namely, how easy is it going to be to get the system up and running if
something fails? or how easy will it be to find files? or back up the
system. I've found having numerous partitions and hd's, that I long for 1
big long continuous drive space again.
Hd's nowadays are too inexpensive to justify saving a few 100mb here and
there. Anyhow, I have a system similar to this.
My experiences is this: create a small boot format 20-50mb for dos6.22 to
start. This will be your boot partition fat16. Ask yourself, do you really
need nt4 and w2k? Unless there is a substantial reason for this, then have
just one (I never even use nt4 much anymore).
For that matter, do you think you'll need 98?
One thing to think about is that if things go wrong, they really go wrong.
And 2) backing up so many partitions,hd's isn't all that easy (Ghost is
better than Drive Image Pro), still not easy. 3) finding files is more of a
pain 4) many progs don't like sharing a common hd space that much between
OS's 5) this is a big one, installing all this software takes time, it's a
pain in the ass to configure and make work 5 different os's.
My computer is an old P Pro 200 dual with adaptec 3940UW built in. 3 scsi
hd's. all these os's. some drivers work for some things, etc. I really
find myself only using 2000 mainly and sometimes linux. that's it.

My advice: simplify, simplify. You'll be glad you did down the road.
Reduce the amount of os's and partitions and drives. Spend the extra time
you'd save troubleshooting os's with your kids, wife, take a walk. They'll
appreciate it. If you're a techie and are experimenting and are curious, by
all means, install everything.

Hardware test program wanted....
Is there anyone out there who's got a good hardware test program that I
could buy/borrow/get?
I'm having problems installing Red Hat Linux 6.2, from the messages of
the installation program it seems there are flaws in the graphics card,
but I'm not certain.
The graphics card is a Diamond Viper V770 with Riva TNT2 chipset and
should be compatible with Xfree 4.0.
I also have problems running certain programs under Win98 and would
dearly like to
find out precisely what the reason is - I've worked a lot on it and
bought new motherboard and graphics card etc - it helped a little but
not enough.
So....I need a test program to find out EXACTLY what's wrong and where.
Can anyone out there help me?

Yours,

Mikkel Kaastrup - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Your problem is just what the error says: your program is not allowed to
send its graphical output to the X-server. If you want your local machine to
allow displaying of remote applications, as root type "xhost
remote_ip_address". On the remoto side you must have an environment variable
called DISPLAY with value "your:machine_ip_address:0": this will tell the
remote application to send its graphical output to your local X-server.

I'm trying to cut costs a little and use a Linux box as a cdrom tower

The problem I've run into is that there are only eight loop devices

How do I create more than 8 loop devices?

We need to have Linux (RH 6) run our process control app at boot. There can
be no login because the app runs unattended. If there is a communication
error, a watchdog is tripped and the system needs to restart. Currently
have a script called in /etc/rc.d/rc.system. This presents some problem
though. I need to also be able to switch to a new console and do some
housekeeping while the app is active.

Is there a way to create a script to login a specific user and then load the
application? Also, is there a way to turn off the drive check being forced.

man mknod

For the new 2.4 kernel, I found this in ``/usr/src/linux/drivers/block/loop.c'':

 * Maximum number of loop devices now dynamic via max_loop module parameter.
 * Russell Kroll <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 19990701
 *
 * Maximum number of loop devices when compiled-in now selectable by passing
 * max_loop=<1-255> to the kernel on boot.
 * Erik I. Bols, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Oct 31, 1999

I am not sure how many loop devices the older kernels allow.

This is a fairly common problem the first time someone tries to compile
a kernel on a system. You're missing the as86 assembler. On Debian this
would be solved by installing the bin86 package. Here's the Debian 2.2
(potato) package description:

root@newdebian:~# dpkg -s bin86
Package: bin86
Status: install ok installed
Priority: standard
Section: devel
Installed-Size: 150
Maintainer: Juan Cespedes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Source: linux86
Version: 0.14.9-3
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.1)
Conflicts: linux86
Description: 16-bit assembler and loader
This is the as86 and ld86 distribution written by Bruce Evans.
It's a complete 8086 assembler and loader which can make 32-bit
code for the 386+ processors (under Linux it's used only to create
the 16-bit bootsector and setup binaries).

That "LI" is from Lilo still hanging around in your MBR. The quickest
way to remove it is to boot with your DOS disk and run the command
'fdisk /mbr' from the DOS prompt. You will not see anything happen, but
on reboot Lilo should be gone.

You (may) also have to use fdisk to set the NT primary partition active
before it will boot. That's done with fdisk menu choice (2).

hi,

this is how i did it, triple boot win98se/NT4/linux SuSE 6.4 with a 17Gb HDD

first remove any/all prtitions from the big HDD using dos fdisk so the drive
is completely blank.

boot from dos floppy and run fdisk, do NOT enable large disk support, create
a primary dos partiton of maximum size allowed 2Gb. Format it as bootable
and then install win98 as normal.

beg borrow or steal a copy of Partition Magic

install this great program and create a FAT16 partition in an extended dos
partition of maximun size, again this will be 2Gb.
insert the NT4 cd... and install, make it install on the new partiton,
install the service pack of your choice etc.. after this is done you should
have a dual boot system win98/NT.

Run Parttition Magic again, create a 500Mb Ex2 partition just after the 2
exisiting partitions, create a linux swap at the end of the drive, below
this create 2 FAT16 partitons of 2Gb again, the remaining space partition as
Ex2.

boot from the SuSE CD install, it will see the partitons and so put "/boot"
on the small 500Mb partition, and "/" on the big one. when you get to the
lilo setup dialog, put it on the root of /boot, NOT on the MBR of the disk.
when you have done. re-boot and then re-boot from the CD and start installed
linux option, when in linux type in the following as root:-

dd if=/dev/hda# of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

(the hash should be replaced with the number of the 500Mb partiton, on mine
it was 6)

put a Dos formatted floppy in the a: drive and type :-

mcopy /bootsect.lnx a:

this will copy a file called bootsect.lnx to the floppy. re-boot into win98,
copy the file from the floppy to the C: drive (top level, same as
autoexec.bat etc..) edit the file boot.ini (it will be a hidden file on C:
so unhide it)
in the file there will be lines coresponding to windows and NT, below this
add the following line:-

C:\bootsect.lnx="Linux"

save and re-boot, you will now have a new option in the NT bootloader for
linux!!!

phew!

:o)

RevJim.

I just purchased a Dynalink modem model DL 1456VQH-T2, the PCI internal one.

I have downloaded the recommended file

get an error message when I run the install script.

I am running REDHAT Linux v6.2 kernel 2.2.14-12 The message i get is that
the module was compiled for a different version.(an earlier one) Can some

how to change the kernel? I am fairly new to Linux so please bear with me.

One obvious thought. Have you gone into your CMOS setup, and reserved
the IRQ and DMA as 'ISA', rather than leaving them at the default P&P
setting. It may be that another device allready in your system is
using this IRQ (The joys of P&P...).
