Any of the above, or Slackware or SUSe or Debian or Corel or (well,
you get the picture). As far as the support you've noted is concerned,
there is no difference between the Linux distributions. Any of them
can provide these services, and most of these services are 'out of the
box' on all of these distributions. You _might_ have to check out
freshmeat for a web cache product (but IIRC, Apache supports this
too), but otherwise, everything you've asked for comes standard in the
Linux distros.

You can use 'xf86config' to make a more precise configuration file for X
that may solve your problem. You will need your mouse and
keyboard type, monitor's horizontal and vertical sync ranges, etc.

Hi,

You can't add Linux in the Windows 2000 boot menu.

To perform dual boot installation first install Windows 2000,
then make non disk partition using Fdisk utility. Configure
the LILO which act as a boot loader for both Windows and
linux. While booting in the LILO prompt type dos to enter
Windows 2000 system.

Ther are few links which provides information on dual
booting windows2000 and linux:

Hope this helps:)

Hello all,

I recently upgraded from RH 6.0 to 6.2 and am tying to recompile the
kernel. The reason is that I had been having printing problems and
learned thatinexplicably
printer support had been disabled in the kernel. Once I re-enabled it, I
attempted to recompile but got the following error:

gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.2.14/include -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe
-fno-strength-reduce -m486 -malign-loops=2 -malign-jumps=2
-malign-functions=2 -DCPU=586 -c -o init/main.o init/main.c
init/main.c: In function "start_kernel':
init/main.c:1273: too few arguments to functon 'dcache_init'
make: *** [init/main.o] Error 1

This is the first "step" in the compilation process, but doesn't get
past it. I run a pentium 120 w/ 64 megs of RAM and a relatively full 1.2
Gig HD. I would imagine that something else was changed in the kernel
configuration that I'm not aware of that's bringing this on. On a
separate note, I was also wondering how to clean up my HD so that I can
get rid of unneeded stuff that may have been left over since the
upgrade. I have virtually NO data on the HD besides what's been put
there by the RH
installation CD's, but instead of taking up only ~ 800 MB of space, the
system now takes up around a GB or so. I would appreciate any
ideas.Thanks in advance.

I really don't know why telnet is not working. Everything I have
looked at seems to be configured properly. My inetd entries look like
this:

ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftp -l -a
telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd
pop-3 stream tcp nowait uucp /usr/sbin/tcpd ipop3d

If you telnet from an outside machine it is able to resolve the name,
but you get a blank screen and after 5-10 seconds windows says "the
connection to host lost". The machine is a new install and I have
installed most services, modules and deamons. Or so I think.
Sendmail and all e-mail services are working fine. Telnet, Ftp, and
Pop-3 are not working. I want to concentrate on telnet first. Once I
figure that one out I have a feel the other two will follow suit. Do
any linux gods out there have an idea??? Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I have a Thinkpad 760CD with a trident Cyber 9320 chipset that has 1MB of
DRAM. The monitor is a TFT standard IBM monitor (active matrix). I can
configure the system for 8bit (256 color) fo X-Windows at 640 x 480 or 800 x
600 resolutions. I cannot go any higher than that. In order to get it to
work at 800 x 600 I had to manually use xf86config to put in the refresh
rates.

When I was using windows NT or 98 on this laptop I was able to goto 800 x
600 at 16bit color (65,535 colors). Does anyone know how to make the TP760CD
goto that resolution and color rate? If so I would greatly appreciate any
help anoyhone can render.

Hello,

I think Linux mandrake is a good move for you. They ahve a neat program in
their package called "Boot to Linux" which installs an icon on your desktop
of your Windows O/S and you simply double click it to run into Linux. I have
Mandrake 7.1 with Gnome sitting on my laptop with Win2k. I have a basic
workstation install and it only eats up 480MB of room. Check it out at:

I would go with the Complete edition of Linux Mandrake 7.1 for 28 bucks. You
can get it at one of the links of the Mandrake site. Mine arrived in 2 days

At the Terminal type: ftp domain.com (replace domain withg the correct
one). You then will be able to login anonymously or use a name and password.
Once done you can send FTP commands to acccess your linux upgrade.

or....

You could head into X-windows and use one of the mant FTP clients that comes
stock with it.

I have been unable to get my Mandrake 7.1 (same problem 7.0) installation
(Samba 2.0.7) to mount smb shares except when logged as root with the share
listed in fstab. Also the netfs service that is supposed to automount nfs
and smbfs shares boots and says it mounted smbfs shares, but they are not
there when logged in as root or some user. cat /proc/mounts does not show
the smbfs shares. When I run (as root) "/etc/rc.d/init.d/netfs start" I see
the same messages as at boot but the mounts actually now exist (cat
/proc/mounts) and root or some user can access the mounts.

my fstab entry looks like

//norman/hd /mnt/norman/hd smbfs user,ro,guest 0 0

Subject: Yes, I know - RTFM, but SMB OK but not NMB ?
Date: Tue, 8 Aug 2000 16:46:29 +0100

Hi folks,
I installed Mandrake 7.0 and it now starts and stops (on shutdown) both SMB
& NMB, I didn't install it, that was done automatically by the Linux
installation - nice of it, but it doesn't seem to work!. That is ti say that
on booting Linux it starts both SMB and NMB and reports OK status. On
shutdown its OK status for SMB but [FAILED] for NMB. Is there a simple
answer to this. Here's the crunch tho'
I can't see anything on my Desktop which refers to Samba except one thing
that says "Samba status" ? What should I be looking for. The tons of reading
I've done doesn't say this is the icon etc, I mean I know that in the
startup scripts you put the SMB and NMB bits bu where does it appear so you
can look at it??
TIA
