Just watching the entire thread, under normal circumstances, the booting
from a Win98 boot disk, going to an a:\ prompt and using the command
fdisk /mbr should have restored your master boot record and have allowed
you to reboot to Windows as if you nor Mandrake had never tampered with
the MBR.

I just shit canned thirty five dollars worth of Mandrake 7.2 for what
ever it may be worth, which for me is worthless.

I found it to be about as amenable to allowing a user to take control
and have a say so in the install process as Microsoft Windows. Even in
Text mode, choosing the all install option to supposedly allow you to
control all aspects of the install.

I evaluated it in the beginning from the stand point of a first time
user and found it to be okay, I guess for someone who wants a Linux
installation without any fuss or bother that will come out of the can
and
plop down on the plate but past that point, I began to have problems. PQ
boot magic does not recognize it as a bootable entity for me, Once
booted into mdk, one can change the boot sequence or reset the default
boot and etc. by modifying the /etc/lilo.conf, but I had no luck getting
an older version of LILO, essentially same situation I had with PQ, to
boot the mandrake when I set it from, say for example RH 6.1 or COL 2.3.

If you have the same edition of MDK that I bought, practically
everything on it is pre-release and will need to be upgraded from the
Mandrake site to get the KDE 1.9something pre upgraded to 2.0 in
addition to about four hours of other download on a 56K connection.

I guess the thing that surprised me most is when I decided to install RH
6.1 back over the partitions that mdk had set on the disk, RedHat told
me I had no linux partitions on my machine, and I know damn good and
well I didn't get it installed in Win as UMSDOS.

Best wishes and good luck.

after you changed this you can(Oh and don't forget the LBA32 option, as
I did)

alter /etc/lilo.conf as i mentioned,
run `/sbin/lilo`
this will overwrite the MBR on your HDD.
remove the floppy and reboot

screen setup, without reinstalling the Linux.

I have also installed a net-card with dynamic IP, but i am not connected
to any network at the moment. Now i have the problem when i am starting
my PC, it stops / waits very long time on (Bringing up the eth0

are there any way to avoid controlling the network interface at the
boot time.

Any help and suggestion will be appreciated.

I compiled kernel 2.4.0-test12 with reiserfs 3.6.23 patch on my mdk7.2 box
(2.2.17 and 2.2.18 kernels are working perfectely)
After booting under 2.4.0, everything loads ok and fast until it loads ie
eth0, then it stops a while , then continues, stops again randomly, ie while
loading postresql, then continues , etc ... (random number of stops and
restarts).
When finally I get the log prompt, I can enter my login name, but after
entering the password, stops and looks dead.
I know it's a test release, but if I can't even test it !....

How to recover hda1. It seems it happened to me as well with my MDK 7.2
installation.

Although I thoroughly partitioned my HD before and left an empty 6GigB =
below
the 8Gig limit for Linux to use during the install : Linux copied
itself over everything on the 30Gig HD and created a 500MB Linux ext2f
and a 29.5Gig Linux extended.

An fdisk /mbr from the Win RescueDisk recovers nothing.

I have just verified, the beep and the reinitializing
of the keryboard is done by DOS not by the BIOS. Int
9 is also completely replaced by the DOS keyboard
driver.

The DOS keyboard driver is optional the BIOS keyboard
driver can be used as well, but the DOS driver has
some additional features.

This particular feature could also be implemented in
Linux, which I think would be a good idea.

Tiefenbacher,
I have had problems trying to use the modules for the HSP PCTel modem
under Mandrake 6.5 (kernel 2.2.13-7mdk) I tried the other pre-compiled
modules as well (pctel_hsp and pctel_pci.o) and I was never able to
successfully insmod the module. I eventually switched my distribution to
RH 6.1 and it worked fine. For my purposes - I don't necessarily need
the most recent kernel/distro on my system so I don't mind "downgrading" -
as long as I can connect to the net w/o having to buy a new modem.

It sounds like you have gotten further along the process than I did since
I never got the irq to be recognized. But for the record - I have had
problems with the module and I never was able to get help from anyone with
it.

David

Then try harder. I'm not responsible for your brain.
The HOWTO is comprehensible to me, and that's the only stick I have.
OTOH I doubt if many people have read the lilo docs themselves - too
long and too much information: useful reference material, but not
stuff to read.

What do you mean? You make it that small. That's all. About 8MB should
be fine. Or just put the kernel image and boot sector
on a partition that IS already below the 1o24 cyl mark. Then you
don't need to make a special partition just for it. Or boot using
laodlin instead.

> problem, which is referred by in every doc would not exists. The problem, i

There's no problem making it that size. Getting people
to make it that size is another matter.

> restate, how do u make lilo do the mbr or a disk?

Eh? Please use comprehensible syntax. You can't "do mbr". I suspect
you mean "put the boot sector on the mbr" I don't know what you mean by
"do .. a disk". Perhaps this is a two-point error? "disk" for
"partition" as well?

Why do you care? Lilo always puts the boot sector either in the mbr or
in a partition, according to whatever you tell it to do in the
lilo.conf file. Look at it, and alter to taste. Use the man page to
help you. Hmm .. I suppose one can name any writable device there,
even a file (i.e. not a device)?

If you are talking about the colors of directories when using the ls
command for example I think you want to take a look at the
/etc/DIR_COLORS file. At least on a RH system.

Try using the command: Xconfigurator

Yes, boot into "linux 1" and

ls /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/

"mv /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/SXXnetwork /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/KXXnetwork"

Without the quotes where the XX is the number shown with the "ls"
command.
Then if you need to start the network you can run:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start

Hi folks,

I want to upgrade my Redhat 6.1 installation to the latest kernel (2.2.18 I
think).

I have downloaded the full RH7.0 Distro from their website and the latest
kernel from kernel.org.

I would normally just reinstall from scratch as this is usually much easier
(for me at least) but I don't want to go through the network, dns and other
configurations all over again.

Can anyone please provide a summary of how I would go about doing this or
point me in the right direction. I've had a look at the kernel HOWTO but am
a bit concerned about the dependencies, lib upgrades etc etc.

It would appear that you don't have the name-servers of your ISP
installed correctly.
Open a console or xterm and edit the file:
        pico /etc/resolv.conf
add the lines
        nameserver IP-NUMBER-OF-1st-DNS
        nameserver IP-NUMBER-OF-2nd-DNS
save and close the file and try again. Now if for some reason the
dialing in processs changes these setting or removes them completely,
you can make the file immutable :
        chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf

No RedHat makes a choice between two prebuild kernels one for
uni-processor machines and one for multi-processor ones.
Build in is nearly everything that can't be compiled as a module, as to
allow the standard kernel to function on as many systems as possible.

Modules that are loaded during the boot process are listed in
/etc/conf.modules IIRC Other modules may be autoloaded by the kernel
when you actually need them, and are removed after they have been
inactive for 5 minutes. You can find the mosules currently loaded with
the /sbin/lsmod command.

If X is configured properly so that you can use "startx" without any
problems then just edit /etc/inittab and change the 3 to a 5 in the line
below.

I've found that doing this helps on systems with lower RAM:

Start in runlevel 3 (console, no X11/gdm/xdm/kdm login screen). Copy
your ~/.xinitrc to some file like ~/.xinitrc_backup and then create a
new .xinitrc file with the only command being your game:

  $ cat > .xinitrc
  /usr/local/games/UnrealTournament/System/ut
  [control-D]

Then run startx and your game will run without the overhead of a
window manager/GNOME/KDE/etc. After you're done, you can copy your
backup .xinitrc file over to restore the old settings.

It uses a pre-built kernel.

Most linux distributions support the 'dmesg' command, which will give
the kernel's bootup log.

Have you tried using "dmesg | less"

It's in glibc; you can link it in with:

  gcc -o blah blah.c -lm
                     ^^^
