I think you need to convert the olde database format
to the new database format. mam rpm should give you
the command to use.

AMD's new chips are all coming out for Socket A. Slot A is in the
process of being phased out.
In terms of performance, I don't think it will matter much.
If you get a good deal on a Slot-A board/CPU go for it. But don't
expect to be upgrading your CPU on that board. The Thunderbird and
Duron are both Socket-A packages.

1. I changed from a P200 to a K6-3 400 on my old machine. Not a single
problem, lots of extra speed.
2. I took the hard drive over to my new (as of last November) Athlon 600.
No problems, lots of extra speed. Compiled at least two kernel upgrades
over the time, no problems, lots of speed.
Problems with AMD:
1. You'll sit tilted to the right. That's from the thickness of all that
extra money in the wallet in your left hip pocket.
2. You won't be sending an Intel unique CPU identifier to anyone who has
the hack and asks for it.
3. You'll just have to put up with the extra speed. Poor you.

For KDE < 1.89 use kstart "/path/to/program" -desktop x
where x is the desktop number. Once they are up, resize
them and close. KDE should then use the last size if

What was the hardware conection between the pcs
when you had the 56k dialup. You will need a anotha
nic in the pc connected to the DSL. This nic will
connect to a hub which then connects ti the other
pcs on the LAN. Check the IP Masquerading, IPChains,

But still, it's a very rare occurrance that departments run UNDER budget.
Saving money on software would release that money for a few home comforts or
whatever, like an office redecoration/refit, hardware upgrades, extra staff
traning and incentives, etc...
Or don't these managers have an imagination?

Not entirely true. The jurisprudence of the U.S. is absolutely full of case
law regarding the enforcement of *common law* copyright. It is well
established, and always has been, that copyright comes into being when the
work is created. These rules applied even before the PTO was established.
As stated below, registration of the copyright is merely additional evidence
of its existence.
> >> I've been doing this for ages.
Good, but I would have expected a more accurate set of statements from
someone who has as much experience as you claim. As for me, I practiced
law, including litigating patent and trademark cases, for a number of years.

Not so. You can litigate a copyright case in the state courts under a
theory of common law copyright infringement if you desire to do so. If you
can establish a basis for federal jurisdiction, you can do so in the federal
courts. With regard to access to the courts, the only thing registration is
required for is to automatically establish jurisdiction in the federal
courts.
> And there are some statutory penalties for copyright infringement that
> only apply if you filed with the Office fairly soon after producing

This is the nut of the question. Proof of damages is often EXTREMELY
difficult in cases of copyright infringement. Registration of the copyright
IS required in order to obtain entitlement to the statutory remedies, which
require no proof.
> So if you expect copyright on your works to be infringed, it would be
> a very _good_ idea to file early and file often.
File early, yes ... once for each incident of "creation" (meaning reduction
of an *idea* to tangible form (additional note ... techniques are NOT
copyrightable ... they MAY be patentable, but that's another story ... ))
... file often? I don't THINK so ... copyright survives the death of the
copyright owner by seventy years under current U.S. law.
> But if you don't expect infringement, then it may be reasonable to wait

Not a really good idea ... unless you have a LOT of proof available that the
infringer INTENTIOANLLY copied your design/work ... waiting MAY lead to the
infringer owning the registered copyright ... then you are left with the
common-law remedies ... as well as a HUGE lawyer bill litigating the case.

I am having the exact same problem as this guy except I'm using
Mandrake 6.1. OK I went through the RPMS on my install disk and found
these entries:
anonftp-2.8-3mdk.i586.rpm
ftp-0.10-3mdk.i586.rpm
gftp-2.0.3-1mdk.i586.rpm
lftp-2.0.4-1mdk.i586.rpm
ncftp-3.0beta18-4mdk.i586.rpm
popt-1.3-2mdk.i586.rpm
telnet-0.12-10mdk.i586.rpm
telnet-server-0.12-10mdk.i586.rpm
tftp-0.10-4mdk.i586.rpm
wu-ftp-2.5.0-1mdk.i586.rpm
So why do all these files end in mdk.i586.rpm? How do I install these
files? Granted I am able to telnet and ftp FROM my machine, just not
TO my machine. Which of these services will allow me to do that?
Thanks,

Subject: nameserver, server slow when disconnected
Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2000 18:23:58 GMT
we have a configuring problem with a suse 6.3 libox, wich is the
internet-gateway and firewal for a small lan, permanent internet access.
It also is the nameserver and mailserver for our domain, secondlevel
domain with fixed official ip.
it shows up that all access to the server is very slow when it has no
access to the internet. during setup there was a similar problem, a
consultant said something about name resolution by root dns server and
reverse resolution. the prob disappeared when our domain finally was
registered with the denic.
i do not understand why a server has to do dns lookups and reverse
lookups to perform simple local tasks, also i don't know exactly what
reverse resolution is, how it is implemented and configured.
isn't it possible to configure the nameserver in a way that he
- does everything local that can be done local,
- works in the same manner as a isolated server when being isolated from
the internet,
- is capable serving all functions when conected to the web?
can a caching nameserver help anything, can we configured it additional
to the other?
we don not want to cut the line for fun, but had real problems when the
router on telco side was broken and we not only missed web access, but
took 30 minutes to read the folder list into our imap clients, which is
similar to no mail access.

Subject: Kernel 2.2.16 not working with ATAPI IDE CDRoms
Date: Wed, 09 Aug 2000 21:00:16 +0200
Hi all,
After getting Linux 2.2.16 compiled and running, I've detected that
the driver for ATAPI CDROM drives isn't working properly. Actually,
it's doing really bad.
At boot time, they are properly recognized and no error or warning
message is produced. However, when the cdrom tray is ejected and close,
the kernels yields a lot of error messages like the following:
=================
ATAPI device hdb:
Unknown Error Type: No sense data -- (Sense key=0x00)
No additional sense information -- (asc=0x00, ascq=0x00)
The failed "Prevent/Allow Medium Removal" packet command was:
"1e 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 "
=================
It doesn't matter wether a CDRom is in the tray or not. The sequence of
error messages always takes place. This is just the beginning. When
forcing the mount of a cdrom, either through gitmount or direct mount
commands, the system simple gets frozen. There is no way to recover it:
neither keyboard, mouse, network or serial ports respond.
I've checked this problem in a number of different machines, Pentium,
PII, and PIII, equipped with different ATAPI CDROM drives : (e.g.
hdb: BCD 24XM CD-ROM, ATAPI CDROM drive
hdb: ACER CD-767E/O, ATAPI CDROM drive
How anybody experience this problem? Do you know of a solution? Any
patch for the driver?
Thanks in advance!
