I have a 20 gb hd ,got fat32 on 15gb. I think redhat should have around 2gb
installsize 'cause full install is 2.3gb. Swap 2 times RAM no more than 128
mb. I want too keep things like staroffice when I upgrade so I make
different partitions: Which one's and how large? There are so many options
to make a partition from like /home/ /usr /boot /local etc.etc. that I
don't know wich and whatfor I should make a partition.

Date: Sun, 03 Jun 2001 10:21:26 GMT

I'm having difficulties getting my ISA SoundBlaster 16 PNP sound card
working correctly with Mandrake 8.0 and a 2.4.5 kernel. Using wavplay,
I'm only able to hear the first fraction of a second of a sound file,
and then I get the following error message in the console:

Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error?

Sound is compiled in as a module, and I'm letting HardDrake configure
it. It looks like an IRQ conflict. Also I've noticed that the sb
module gets loaded twice during the boot sequence. Any help would be
greatly appreciated!

Subject: Building Kernel 2.4.5
Date: Sun, 03 Jun 2001 21:11:43 +1000

Hi everybody. I thought I'd learnt enough that things like this wouldn't
happen to me any more. *sighs*
Anycase, I've been trying to build kernel 2.4.5 on my Mandrake 7.2
system and I keep running into the same problems, once I get a
successful kernel, no matter what, my PS/2 mouse won't work. Now I've
tried a variety of different kernels for 2.4.5 - the newest from
kernel.org, the src.rpm that is in Mandrake cooker, I even tried
installing RedHat 7.1 (*sighs* Converting to Reiserfs back to ext2, and
back when RedHat 7.1 didn't work)

Now I've tried a suggestion somebody gave of compiling the kernel with
mouse support and PS/2 mice loaded in solid as opposed to a module, but
still no reply. I've checked that /dev/psaux exists and has the right
major and minor nodes, and I've even cat'ed it while I wriggle my mouse
around. In all cases, nothing.

Anycase, if anyone can give some suggestions?

Try redirecting the output of 'pnpdump' to /etc/isapnp.conf

The usual defaults for sb are io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1

I got irq7 errors until /etc/isapnp.conf was created.

Subject: installing from the harddisk
Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2001 21:07:03 +1000

hi all

its been suggested to me that i should try to install from the hard disk -
due to problem i'm having installing rh7.1 from the cdrom. [ i made a couple
of posts about it in this group but no replies yet ].

i've got a 20G PrMa, 6.4G PrSl, 4.3G SeMa and cdrom as my SecondarSlave. at
the moment i've got all my data files on my SeMa and i cannot affort to
change that. however i'm willing to sacrifice my PrSl, [windows] harddisk
for this noble task. i want linux on my PrMa.

i've got the redhat 7.1 cd's. while the cdrom seems to work, i'm unable to
install from it.

so how can i instaall rh7.1 from my harddisk?

riyaz

again my original problem:

=====
i checked the actual error message by doing an ALT+F4 and this is what i got

<4> hdd: command error: status = 0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
<4> hdd: command error : error = 0x50
<4> end_request: I/O error, dev 16:40 (hdd), sector 1130896

hdd is my cd-rom drive from where i'm installing. i tried it two times and
the first time there were 2 sets of the above, difference only in the sector
number. the second time there were four sets and again the difference were
in the sector number which were completely different from the first try.

the message returned is "error ocuured in copying install image to hard
drive". there is intense cdrom and harddisk activity before the error for
about 3-4 second during the attempted "install image transfer".

can someone tell me what's going on? how i can avert this?

note: my cd rom is not legacy hardware, its a 36X diamond data with PIO-4
capability.
btw, rh6.2 installs fine from the same cdrom drive, no problems.

Date: 3 Jun 2001 05:06:24 -0700

Hi,

I am new to linux. any advice is appreciated.
   I have installed Windows 2000 professional &
linux ManDrake 7.2 in my PC(two hard disks with
1st one for win2000, 2nd one for linux).

I use TECOM IAS-RT box to connect to Internet.
(every resident shares the server installed in
the basement in my community. I think the connnection
flow is: PC -> RT-box -(phone line)-> shared server
   -> DSL -> internet)

It works fine in win2000, the setup is quite the
same as dialup with modem, but with no need to specify
phone number, login id, password(RT-box is physically
connected to server, no phone number is needed).

The COM1 is used for RT-box and I've tried to setup for
RT-box in linux(with graphic Mandrake config tool). the
error message always says "your system is not connected
to internet" --> it fails to detect the RT-box in COM1 ???
or it needs to specify something special ???

   any advice is appreicated.

That NC100 NIC won't even work with Windoze. Find a store selling

bucks or less.

Hi,

You might want to check your BIOS settings. My toshiba laptop has a
setting that lets you choose how the mouse is controlled,
"auto-selected" or "simultaneous". If you have such a setting, it
sounds like your laptop is now set on "auto-selected", the BIOS will
choose external if it is connected.

Don't know how you bring up your BIOS settings, usually it is some
hotkey when you boot-up - it is ESC on mine, but F1 or F12 are not
uncommon.

BTW, some BIOS/OS combinations spit it with "simultaneous" - W2K
doesn't like this on mine, so I leave it at "auto-selected", cause I
dual-boot a lot.

Problem solved,
back to kernel 2.2.x with suse 7.1, since 3 distros (redhat, mandrake,

I think everyone commented about xinetd except to tell you that you can use
the ntsysv command to setup which services you want to enable. You machine
shouldn't have an inetd.conf file.

When you create the .rhosts file it's picky about the machine name. To find
the information you need first telnet from machine1 (the one you are going
to run rsh from) to machine2 (the one with the .rhosts file). Once you log
into machine2 issue the netstat command and look at the structure of the
machine name under Foreign Address.

If it reads something like happy.example.com:1056 then your .rhosts should
read like this;

happy.example.com root

Be sure and chmod 600 .rhosts (assuming this was for root, the .rhosts need
to be in /root)

Also. the machine name doesn't need to be in the hosts.equiv file. If you
have it the hosts or DNS setup that is enough, if you can do an nslookup on
machine2 then you're OK.

Look, I'm a newbie. I sure nuff do need major handholding to get my USB
modem up and at 'em. I installed Mandrake 8.0 and it's very nice. I
prefer Gnome to KDE, is that bad? Anyway, I'm stuck.

I know how to install packages, I successfully changed my wallpaper and
set up my mouse to be left-handed. This is the full extent of my powers
(in Linux) (so far). I'm not even sure what questions to ask, OK? My
modem, she's a no go. No worky. Me sad.

It's not a winmodem. It's a Boca Tidalwave (hardware corrected) external
USB modem. Sys specs on request. I built this computer myself, so I'm
not a total idiot, I just don't understand the instructions I've seen.
I'm all, "Duh? But what does THAT mean?" You dig?

Can somebody give it to me in window-speak? Thank you.

I have been told to do this:

mount -t usbdevfs none /proc/bus/usb

Great, I'd love to, but what does that mean? Do I come in as root and
type it in at a command prompt in terminal? I'm booting to either KDE
or Gnome, although I like Gnome better. What will happen if I do this?
Is it enough, or will there be more? I know how to set up kppp, I just
want my modem recognized. Assume it's supported, and please don't ask
me to check if it's supported. It's supported, OK? I just don't know
how to enable it.

Thank you.
