NOT sure if our problems are related, but when my Red Hat 6.2 System runs
2.2.16 (tried -3, -8 & -12) I have problems accessing ATAPI CD-ROM
Drives from Guest OSs within a Virtual Machine (VMware 2.0.1/2.0.2)!
>From within the Guest OS Data CDs detect as Audio CDs and are unreadable,
then after existing the VM the same Data CD can NO longer be mounted
natively from Linux (when they could before the attempted access from within
the VM)?? The failed native linux accesses generate the following errors:

kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
  kernel: 16:00: rw=0, want=33, limit=0
  kernel: dev 16:00 blksize=1024 blocknr=32 sector=64 size=1024 count=1

Rebooting (or running 2.2.14) seems to be the only way to again be able
to mount Data CDs. Unfortunately I still do NOT know if the problem
lies with 2.2.16 or VMware's access of the 2.2.16 ATAPI Driver?
I tried two different CD-ROM Drives in the same PII System, so I do
NOT believe it is a "problem" with the physical drives themselves!
Todate I have NOT received any replies to my posts on the VMware Newsgroups,
hence I do NOT know if I am alone with this "problem"? Bothersome that any
application should be able to adversely the functioning of the ATAPI Driver
and that sequence of operations is determinant!!! Especially curious since
2.2.16 is expected to be used in the upcoming Red Hat 7.0, so hopefully
this can be resolved!!!

How come nobody ever even give me $25.00 for not doing anything!?

Anyway. You have sold your code for profit. But just won't admit it.
Because you know the whole idea of GNU-GPL, FSF and profit takings are
contradictory to one another. So, you have to keep finding, making

Hi,

I have Red Hat Linux 6.1 with the 2.2.12-20 kernel. And I just
installed a Hewlett Packard CD-Writer 9310i. It works in Windows and it
suggests with it being set to the "Cable Select" jumper. I'm just
wondering if Linux works with Cable Select? Or do I have to put the
jumper on Slave or Master? My CD-Reader which came with the computer is
Master I think (probably). So does that mean I put the CD-Burner on the
Slave jumper? And also if I have Plug and Play enabled on Linux will it
autodetect the CD-Writer? If not, is there any other way?

Please tell me anything on making it work, thanks.

Subject: kernel panic - yes or no Question
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 06:08:57 GMT

The question is - if you copy a kernel from one disk to another, say hdb
to hda do you have to reconfigure and recompile it?

I have the 2.2.14-5 kernel installed on hdb1. Recently I repartitioned
hda to include several partitions where I intend on setting up another
"instance" of linux. I've set up the filesystem, installed the
sysvinit package as well as bash, reconfigured and installed lilo copied
the fstab file over and updated it and created an inittab file. I
believe that I have everything needed to get the machine to boot to the
new partition. (both bash and sysvinit were statically compiled. the
libraries should be available) When it does boot I get a kernel panic
no init found try passing init= option to kernel. Lilo's pointing to
the correct partition. fstab is set up correctly, although i believe it
is used after INIT starts up. I have tried several variations in the
inittab file. bash is in its proper place. init is in its proper
place. the only thing that I think could be wrong is that compiled in
the kernel somewhere is a pointer that is pointing home looking for
inittab where it used to be on hdbX.

I had a problem like this once. Lilo did not want to die. It resisted
every attempt I made to erase it from hda mbr. Pissed off and desperate
I used fdisk to make a copy of another mbr from another harddrive that i
wasn't using at the time and wrote that copy to the mbr of the disk that
LILO had assimilated. My effort effectively got rid of LILO. I
repartitioned the disk, formatted it and all was fine. Don't know if
this could have any adverse, lasting effects on a drive or not (at the
time i didn't care i just wanted to get LILO erased) but it worked for
me.

Also, Win9X is really good about cleaning up the mbr on the disk that
your installing it on. You might reinstall or just install Windows to
the disk. It thinks there are no other operating systems and kind of
bogarts the mbr.

Of course you could just edit /etc/lilo.conf if you still have linux on
your system to reflect the new digs of your kernel or the partition
where windows is then do a lilo -v

I'm running the 2.2.16 kernel and I have an Iwill SIDE-2935UW SCSI
card connected to the Yamaha internally and an AIWA 4mm DAT
externally. The problem is that wherever I have the CDRW drive and
any other external device connected my system hangs shortly after
trying to access the CDRW drive. The other device works fine but the
CDRW never responds. The system hangs so I have to power cycle it and
the Yamaha drive error light blinks.

I have the termination as follows:

SCSI card off
CDRW on
4mm DAT on

Things are connected thusly:

         external internal
AIWA 4mm DAT <--------> SCSI card <--------> Yamaha CDRW

Any help or pointers on how to get this to work is greatly
appreciated.
