You have to hit the [Enter] key. Seriously it must have done something.
What did the error say? Maybe it is true. (see below)

It should ONLY work for root. If you cannot find it on your system,
install it from your CD. I heard that some RedHat versions do not install
it automatically.

Hi Folks
Anyone managed to get an external Imation superdisk to work?
I have exhausted all avenues, and it still just sits there.
Doing a cdrecord -scanbus shows
scsibus1:
1,0,0 100) 'MATSHITA' 'LS-120 VER5 00' 'F523' Removable Disk
scsibus0 is the cdrw.
I have RedHat 7.1, if that helps.
Thanking you in advance.

I downloaded SO 6.0 (or 6.1?) and it repeatedly says that the system is
not Java capable or enabled, or some such. Since there is Java in the
kernel, the browser, and the JDK, any idea where it looks before
deciding? I looked on their site for a JRE but they seem to assume that
you have guessed what it wants.
Went back to 5.2, any release which doesn't list what it needs and where
to get it is probably not all that wonderfully done in other ways.

Are the old libs still there ? If yes, then you can re-create all links
via /sbin/sln and this includes the libs and the dynamic linker of course.
Oh and ls is not a shell command, but statically linked apps are going
to work still and sln just means static ln, so should RH come with such
binaries of tar, too you might be out of the woods.

It sounds like the above log (which appears to be from the client) is
attempting to connect to lp0 on itself (localhost). Does sam+962 have a
printer called lp0.

That looks identical to mine in Mandrake, but mine is the default lp
printer instead of being called lp0 (it does print to /dev/lp0).

Silly question maybe, but can you ping localhost and sam+962? Is the lo
interface up (ifconfig). Is sam+962 listed in your /etc/hosts.lpd (are
plus signs legal in hostnames)? What output do you get from the hostname
command?
Try stopping lpd and run it using the -l switch (for logging).

Since Win95/98 run much hotter and got much worse battery life on my
laptops than Linux, I'm reasonably sure that the HLT is there and works.
However, if you look in the code for process.c, you see that there is a
value for CPU characteristics called hlt_works_ok. This is the idle loop:
================================================================
/*
* We use this if we don't have any better
* idle routine..
*/
static void default_idle(void)
{
if (current_cpu_data.hlt_works_ok && !hlt_counter) {
__cli();
if (!current->need_resched)
safe_halt();
else
__sti();
}
}
================================================================
Now if the hlt_works_ok characteristic is not set for your CPU, then
a halt might not happen. I have no idea what kernel version a "Debian
standard" is, but if it isn't a kernel which knows about Duron, or gets
confused by the O/C, that flag may not be set. If you are running a 2.4
kernel, forget that. If you are running 2.219 or any kernel which has
config options for Duron, also forget. But if you are running an older
kernel which may be guessing on CPU and being safe, you may not be
getting HLT because the kernel isn't dure it's safe.

At LinuxExpo Sun was showing Linux applications running on Solaris.
They don't get it, the arrow points the other way. There's a reason why
there's no SolarisExpo, Solaris is a tool; Linux is a philosophy, a
religion, a way of life, and only incidentally an operating system.

I'm not sure what you have there, but I can't see that it would serve any
purpose to mount the windows partition to solve a dual boot problem. Did
you make a boot partition? If so, you might try this:
Boot linux and login as root. Type
cfdisk
at the command prompt and see which partition is bootable (has a B marked
beside it). If /boot is not marked with a B, change it to that (remove the
B from the windows partition at the same time).
Perhaps more importantly, as I understand it, it is best to have linux be
the master drive. I think this is specified in the Bios set-up, so you may
have to go into the bios and change that. I'm pretty new to linux myself.

Hi,

The output I gave was from hdparm. hdparm -d1c1 is what I used to
activate 32bit access and DMA. Then, testing with hdparm -t gave the
problems and the drives were switched back to non-DMA automatically.

Looks as if the default setup is to make burners scsi and leave
readers ide. If you want both scsi, set the flag in /etc/lilo.conf so
that both are force scsi. Then rerun lilo, obviously.

I would like some advice from others who may know more about
linux (specifically RH6.2) internals.
After nearly 6 problem-free months with my RH6.2, it all of a sudden
started to behave weirdly.
- First, it wouldn't allow me to "su" to root. (If I logged out, and
logged in as root, no problem. Login as myself, and su to root, I
keep getting an "incorrect password".)
- Second, when I ran xlock to temporarily lock my display, I
got the same treatment, forcing me to do a hard shutdown and
reboot.
- On reboot, I noticed that:
1. I can't su to to any user.
2. I can only mount floppies, and cdroms if I logged in as root.
Before, regular users were able to mount filesystems
tagged with the "users" option in /etc/fstab.
3. /var/log dir tree is missing
4. After creating (via mkdir) /var/log, /var/log/httpd, etc,
there's are persistent error logs that show up (repeatedly)
in /var/log/messages:
> localhost init: cannot execute "/sbin/mingetty"
> ...
> localhost init: Id "2" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
> localhost init: Id "3" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
> localhost init: Id "4" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

> localhost init: Id "5" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
> ...
> localhost rpc.statd[1998]: gethostbyname error for ^X^X^Y^ [junk deleted]
QUESTIONS:
1. Any ideas on what caused this?
2. I'm ready to re-install RH6.2 (or install RH7.x on top). Can I do so
without having to kill my current Linux partitions?
Thanks in advance.

Hello. I hope I am in the right group for my question and I certainly am
not trying to test anyone's patience.
I am a Windows "vet" ( since about 1993 ) but have done a lot of extensive
reading on Linux and it's dominance on the web, ect. This is something I
really would like to learn because I intend to broaden my horizons with
programming, ect.
1. As an individual who does not know the first thing about Linux, which
version would you recommend (preferably free ) to be installed on a 166mhz
pentium with 2 hard drives ( a 2.0 and a 6.0 )that I would like to
configure to be a "dual boot" system. I am currently running Windows 98
second Edition.
2. Does anyone know of any outstanding links on the net geared towards
Linux and the newbie ?
3. I keep hearing horror stories of system crashes. How much risk of
crashing a system during an install is there and can it permanately damage
the system ?
Thanks
