I have the same problem with RH 6.2 however if I boot from diskette it works
fine. It seems like something is hanging up the parallel port when I boot
from hard disk, but I can't see what.

both the parport and parport_probe modules appear in my lsmod output.

Any thoughts other than recompiling the kernel?

I'm trying to find a software combination that works in the same fashion
as mdmpoold for linux and npcomm for windows to enable modem sharing.
Presently, I have to have my ISA modem in my linux box and need to
access it over the internal network from my windows box. mdmpoold and
npcomm work great as long as I am using Win98/ME/NT. I need this to
work in Windows 2000 but it seems NPComm does not function properly in
Win2000.

Can anybody offer any other solutions?? (I am trying to avoid using
masq/routing tables as this setup allows for fax/data/DUN where masq
would only allow for ppp connecitons.)

Any help/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Other than Linux for Windows (LNX4WIN) of Mandrake, is there any other
similar program?

I have been using MS Windows and would like to try out Linux. After trying
LNX4WIN of Mandrake and installing Linux, I began to love Linux. But I
would like to try other distributions, too. I don't think LNX4WIN is able
to install Linux from other distributions. Since I had tried to install Red
Hat Linux 6.1 but unsuccessful.

Definitely, I will format my HDD and install Linux somedays in the future
but not until I am able to handle Linux. Since at the moment, I don't know
how to setup the printer, network, MODEM and so on.... Still have to clang
on Windows.

TIA!

Do rpm -qpi popt-1.3-2mdk.i586.rpm to see what it is. Then when you
are at it notice the Name entry. That is the argument to use if you
want to remove it.

Should be:

  rpm -e popt-1.3-2mdk

or

  rpm -e popt

The name of the package is not popt-1.3-2mdk.i586.rpm. This is the
name of the *file* which contains the popt package.

And besides, the pop3 server is nost likely in a package called imap
found in a file called imap-***.rpm, where the *** is the release
version architecture information.

Suspect no one: No in.ftpd program anywhere. On some system this
comes with the wu-ftpd package, which you might need to install.
If not wu-ftpd, then install whatever provides ftp service.

Suspect no two: Access denied by /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow.

There is a HOWTO for such issues:

Try mount.app. It's a WindowMaker Dock Applet, but it also works with
other WM's if you start it with the -n option.

http://mountapp.sourceforge.net/

BTW : WindowMaker is a very nice WM which provides a more comfortable
environment than twm/fvwm but still doesn't use much resources. Maybe
it needs still too much, I've never tried to run it with 16M of RAM,
but you could try it (if you didn't yet).

Start an editor (emacs, vi, joe, .......) and edit the file
/etc/lilo.conf. Add the following lines:

other = /dev/hda2
  label = win
  table = /dev/hda

Replace /dev/hda2 with the partition your windows is installed on.

Afterwards save the file and exit the editor. Issue the command
"lilo". It should output something like:

Added linux*
Added win

Afterwards you can just type "win<ENTER" at the LILO boot prompt to
boot Windows.

For more information on LILO configuration see:

http://howto.tucows.com/LDP/HOWTO/BootPrompt-HOWTO.html
man lilo.conf

Hope this helps!

I've had good luck with the NETGEAR XM128 and a high speed serial card.
The modem's serial port is capable of 460.8Kbps, so get a serial card
capable of at least that. The cost is nice too... $169 for the modem, and
$30 for a decent serial card that will handle the thruput.

Below is a sample lilo.conf. Copy the relevant bits and edit for your
purpose, then run ``/sbin/lilo''; watch for error messages.

I'm setting up an internal LAN here at work to test my firewall.

I have started setting it up according to the Linux-Howto and I can ping all

But my question is how can I set it up so that i can control mail coming in
and out.

internal server-192.168.2.1-eth1

                                default gateway(192.168.1.1). This is where
i will eventually be placing my firewall.

I am also confused as to what my default gateway's are for the internal
server and internal pc.

I need help!

Heh, that's like saying if you choose a pentium optimised kernel the whole
distro is pentium optimised.

The majority (everything apart from the kernel) of SuSE, even 6.4, is
compiled for i386 (or ppc, apx etc) and does not use 3dnow. The kernel
doesn't do enough maths for the 3dnow patch to make a significant
difference. If you want 3dnow support in packages that will make real use of
it you need to recompile them yourself (things like xmms/mpg123 spring to
mind).

The kernel is optimised for it, everything else isn't.

What does it say when you use

# fdisk -l /dev/hda (or whatever way you identify your disk)

Does it reckon your FAT32 partition? If it does, what happens when you try
to mount it by

# mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos_c (say /dev/hda1 is reported FAT32)

if you can do it, I wonder why linuxconf doesn't see that, and without
linuxconf, you can add one line in your /etc/fstab anyway (man fstab, man
mount).
