looking at /var/log/messages would have told you that the daemon was
trying to be spawned but could not b/c it was not on the drive...i had
this problem with ftp. I wanted an ftp daemon to catch ftp requests.
Inetd.conf was configured with wu.ftp but that wasn't installed. I
switched it to in.ftp and it worked fine.
I found the problme by looking at what /var/log/messages told me.

They may very well already be installed.
To check, type in...
rpm -q anonftp
rpm -q ftp
etc....
Not everything on the install CD will be installed. For a workstation
installation the daemons are not installed...etc...
Linux programs all follow the same format: program_name-
version.cpu_class.rpm
Sometimes other platform specific info is embedded in there...
So, all the programs you listed are for Mandrake (mdk) on an Intel
Pentium class (i586), and they are RPM builds.
Cheers
Mark

Why are you blaming the tool for what's the fault of the people creating
the packages???
What was stopping you from visiting www.mysql.com, downloading the
rpms of the mysql package (MySQL, MySQL-client, MySQL-devel, MySQL-shared),
then:
perl -MCPAN -e shell

Then install the MySQL modules. I'm kind of an RPM-nazi, but I don't
bother with RPMs to install perl modules.

changes get contributed in.

You miss the point. The specific name of the application, the nature
of the application, do not matter in the slightest. As mentioned
below, some of this is _a bit silly_.
>> Some of those options are somewhat silly, but legally viable.
The point, that evidently you're too enamoured with making fun of the
idea of a DVD player app to recognize, is that whatever the application,
whether a DVD player, or text editor, or accounting system, or web cache,
or whatever, the author has the ability to release the code simultaneously
under the GPL as well as under whatever other licenses he or she wishes
to use.
One might release under the GPL to provide something hobbyists may
be interested in, whilst also having a ROMed version configured for
deployment embedded in "appliance" devices, as well as having a third
license for "expensive, royaltied source that allows customization"
usable for those that like the GPLed code, but don't want to need to
release sources that the GPL would mandate.
That precise scenario has reportedly been the case for Aladdin
Ghostscript, which is dually released under GPL as well as other
'private' license arrangements, and I suspect that it's also the case
for the Cygnus Ecos RTOS.

Subject: Re: E-Mail server not receiving mail
Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 03:05:04 GMT
Check first to see if sendmail is answering on your box by telnetting
into it on port 25. If it answers, note the version and box name.
telnet mydomain.com 25
It should respond with something like:
220 mydomain.com ESMTP Sendmail 8.9.3; Thu, 10 Aug 2000 20:47:36 -0500
If it doesn't answer then sendmail is not running or your MX record is
incorrectly configured at the DNS. Try telnetting into your machine on
port 25 using the IP number instead of the FQDN. If it then answers
then you can bet it is a MX record problem.
Could be also that the mail is going into a directory that you do not
expect.
I'm terrible on things like this, but the guys over at the sendmail
newsgroup are the real experts.

install linux to the emty part.
install lilo to hda "or better none as c:"
boot to linux
config lilo to boot from the / partion.
run lilo
then in a shell promt type:
dd if=/dev/hda? of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
then copy it to c:
or mcopy /bootsect.lnx a:
? is the / partion ie. hda5
boot with a win9x floppy
fdisk /mbr
copy bootsect.lnx to c:\
then edit the winnt boot.ini file
add:
c:\bootsect.lnx="linux"
now you can boot win9x, win2000, or linux from the ntbootloader.
this is how i did it.

Reply-To: sii@bilow
I am administrating a web server and a lot of users want their urls forwarded
to other sites.
Is it possible to keep the original address in the browser address window after
redirecting it to the desired destination by changing something in the apache
configuration files?
As an example, 1 user has a web site http://www.spidermandesign.com
Does the facility exist so that when a user enters
http://www.spidermandesign.com
and they are redirected to where the site is hosted at
http://www.james30.freeserve.co.uk
that www.spidermandesign.com remains as the site address in the browser
address bar and it does not change to www.james30.freeserve.co.uk ?
I have another question about caching:
the apache configuration file contain:
# Proxy Server directives. Uncomment the following line to
# enable the proxy server:
#ProxyRequests On
# To enable the cache as well, edit and uncomment the following lines:
#CacheRoot /var/cache/httpd
#CacheSize 5
#CacheGcInterval 4
#CacheMaxExpire 24
#CacheLastModifiedFactor 0.1
#CacheDefaultExpire 1
#NoCache a_domain.com another_domain.edu joes.garage_sale.com
I have a lot of web sites of the form http://www.Server/~user and the user
html files are on another computer that the web server has to get via nfs.
Would enabling the cache statements cache the user html files and reduce nfs
requests?
I also have the following questions:
does the cachefs feature exist on other operating systems than solaris (linux,
hpux, osf)?
Does the shadow (/etc/shadow) feature exist on other operating systems than
solaris (linux, hpux, osf)?
Thank you very much.
