Hi Cindy,

You can boot your machine into single user mode to grab what you need or to
fix the problem by typing "linux single" at the LILO: prompt. You'll get a
root shell and then you can do what you need to do. You may have to type
"mount -a" to make your filesystems accessible.

As for moving files to a windows machine and then back to Linux... You may
have problems if you have a long file names. Windows doesn't do so well
with them. It won't trash your files but it may wreck the names of those
files. I normally tar a directory structure into a single file and then
save that on some other machine until I can get it back to the target Linux
box. Something like "tar cvf mytarball.tar myDirOfFiles/".

Good Luck,
RJ

Precisely. Because I don't want to bypass RPM since it's the only
quick, reliable, and easy way to know what software is installed on a
host, and what version.

You probably have the "TZ" environment variable set to your default
timezone. If you unset this variable, your timezone changes will appear
as you expect. Read `man tzset` for further explanation.

What version of Windows is this? When I still had Windows on hda, I had
hdb full of various Linux and Linux swap partitions (well, they were all
inside an extended partition too), and never had a problem. That was
Windows 95, so maybe the situation for dual-booters has got worse since
then.

A useful hint for putting Windows partitions on two drives is that the
drive ordering for two disks is as follows (my information's a few years
old, so I suppose this may have changed):

  1) Primary partitions on first hard disk
  2) Primary partitions on second hard disk
  3) Logical partitions on first hard disk
  4) Logical partitions on second hard disk

However, the only reason you need a primary partition under Windows is
to get booting to work. So if you want to add the sort of partition you
mention above, just create an extended partition and drop a small FAT
logical partition into it, and it'll come after all the partitions on
your first hard disk in Windows' drive lettering scheme.

An appropriate .sig, I suppose ...

You could still try, as the latter is probably only listed because it's
in a #! line in a script.

Any package referring to /usr/local is a very badly made package, and if
possible a bug should be filed. :(

I have two hard drives.

Win2K on first HD first Partition
Win98 on first HD second Partition
Linux is on the Second HD first Partition

Your replay to my post sayed "Set up a small (~12 MB) /boot partition at the
beginning of the disk." Do you mean I have to reload Win2K, witch is at the
begining of the first disk?

If your system hangs while starting sendmail, it may be due to the networking
not being set up as you have said. sendmail's attempts to do its name
resolutions will eventually time out & the system should come up. It may take
a few minutes, but it should eventually finish the boot up.

I have made the following installation for a high school were i work for and
i play the role of a System Administrator.

I have a Pentium MMX @ 166 Mhz with 64 MB RAM acting as NIS Server and NFS
server. I'm exporting the users home directories to the Computer LAB; In the
computer lab I have workstations ranging from K5 to Celeron @433 Mhz; with
an average of 32 Mb of RAM at least (Many have 64 Mb of RAM).

During some clases we had a misterious hang that all the network frezeed, we
rebooted and then we continued working without problem. WE don't have
harware problem; we even changed a disk that seems to be faulty; but the
problem persists.

We're currently working with SuSE 6.4 both in server and workstations; the
server si running kernel NFS; I'm aware of that this is still under
development but I hva e to run on the workstations StarOffice and this was
the only solution I've found

Thanks for any advice

Thanks for your reply. What I am actually trying to do is, start a small
ISP in a small country town which at present only has ISDN available for
a fast connection to the internet. I admit I'm not familiar with ISDN
and the new cards which are out. I have found a card which has 24
digital modems for the dial-in connections so now what I am looking for
is a ISDN PRI/T1 capable card or modem that I can increase bandwidth for
future growth when needed. I ran accross www.spellcast.com which has a
dual ISDN PRI/T1 card and am waiting to hear from them on it.

Any help on hardware to start an ISP would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,

I have the same machine, TP760CD. I got the display to work 800x600
and 16bit color under SUSE Linux 6.4. The trick was to put

Option "linear"

in Section "Device" of XF86Config. I did that using the sax X-config

Hope that helps.

BTW: Do you have any idea how to get the mpeg hw of the TP760CD to
