You can download it from http://www.sun.com/staroffice I believe it's
about 100Megs (but can't remember)
Many distributions ship with staroffice when you buy it, but not the
downloadable distributions.

Sorry, how's this a problem? Are you trying to turn telnet off, or is
there something else you forgot to paste in, or are you trying to get it
to give you a login prompt as well ('telnet -l user' may be your friend
here)?

ircii is one of the fairly canonical IRC clients; a lot of people swear
by BitchX; I personally like irssi-text (depending on your distribution,
it may be packaged with irssi proper).

Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2000 04:59:08 GMT

Downloaded compiled and installed a new kernel. 2.2.16, replacing
2.2.5-15 that came with my RedHat 6.0 distro. My first try at
upgrading.

My new lilo.conf. is exactly the same as before the upgrade. the image
line in the file is " image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5-15" There was a link
from linux to linux-2.2.5-15 in the /usr/src/ file. I broke that link
when I renamed the old linux file. The new linux,after extracting the
file from the tarball, doen't show any link.

Question: Why does the config file still refer to that link? I know
that the new kernel is booting and running. Can I edit the lilo.conf
file without any danger of screwing up Lilo? and, can I also delete
all of the old 2.2.5-15 stuff from /usr/src/ ...and../boot/ ?

Have a copy of vmlinuz in the base directory /, Should that be there
also?

Also get a message at boot-up for several functions that
says,"/boot/system.map has an incorrect kernel version"
How do I fix that?

So that /usr can be read-only and /home can be read-write. (I assume he

partition you don't also mess up your /. And vice versa. So that you
can comfortably clone your OS without also cloning your own files. And

Etc. Etc.

He forgot to list /var as a separate partition. That's quite important.
I really hate runaway log files growing to swamp / or /home.

If you really don't know this and you aren't just trolling, go check

There are some legitimate reasons for making a one partition system.
They boil down to "the owner is an idiot and/or doesn't care about

Hi,

here's en excerpt from the lilo readme:
 =84LI The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage b=
oot=20
    loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a=
=20
    geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map =

    installer.=93
After rerunning lilo, did you get the =84added redhat=93 message?
Also, is redhat really in =84/dev/hdc=93, or perhaps in =84/dev/hdc2=93?=
 I don't=20
know much about redhat, but in my suse the boot image is on an own parti=
tion.
Hope it helps,

If you're going to writing stuff at high speeds as well as using the machine
you really want SCSI. Depends if you have the cash but SCSI is much nicer
for these sorts of things.

It is quite possible that the machine is not set up correctly to use the IDE
devices.

What does /sbin/hdparm /dev/hda (or whatever devices your hdd/cdrw etc one)
report. eg on this machine it gives
/dev/hda:
 multcount    = 16 (on)
 I/O support  =  1 (32-bit)
 unmaskirq    =  1 (on)
 using_dma = 1 (on) [This is the important one to have on]
 keepsettings =  0 (off)
 nowerr       =  0 (off)
 readonly     =  0 (off)
 readahead    =  8 (on)
 geometry     = 526/255/63, sectors = 8452080, start = 0

Some newer ide chipsets aren't supported properly in the latest kernels and
need a patch for your kernel (I use 2.2.16 with hedrick's ide patch:
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/ iirc).

Hi Folks!

I use mc to browse through rpm packages' directory structure. It works
fine with mc4.5.40 but newest versions don't allow for this: they only
show basic info on the package (header, install and upgrade scripts
links etc) but no directories and files. I've tried to figure out the
command mc issues to rpm to do this but seemingly they are identical.
Does somebody know what should I change to retrieve the old behaviour in

Its likely that will not work unless you have an old ps/2 mouse as I hear
the electronics in newer mice wont work with an adapter on a serial port.

HRm....

Why someone wouldn't want to tailor their kernel to the hardware they have is
beyond me.... The machine boots and runs faster if it doesn't have to wade
through 400 different card drivers, insert modules, etc, just to get eth0
working.

But then again, maybe I'm willing to work for something good, rather than
accepting what someone else has done as "ok".

Subject: Re: Funny - NO, create subnets: No local interfaces - can-u-help pls?
Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2000 13:58:47 GMT

Ian,

Not sure. Details you provide are skimpy but here goes.
Subnets are modified with Linuxconf -> network-> host information, or
ifconfig on the command line. Not in smb.conf, so I would restore the
smb.conf changes you made. If you have a network "all of the devices on the
same wire" then you have a network. However, you can break that network
into smaller subnets.
This is done by adding a subnet mask or network mask. Subnet masking is
complicated but to simplify, if you're using a Class C intra-network,
192.168.xxx.xxx then use the default subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 on all
devices and assign IP addresses in the range xxx.001-253. For example,
192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.253 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0  addresses
192.168.1.0 and 192.168.1.254 are reserved for TCP use.

On Linux enter ifconfig to display the interface configurations, on W98 run
winipcfg.exe. The IP addresses and subnet masks should match.

Pls post more details and status
