Is there a know bug with redhat 7 that dhcp will not use renew the ip
correctly? I talked to a guy on a mirc channel and he switched it from pump
to dhcpcd.

Just wondering if this is normal, it was a fresh install that I tried like 3
times....

Thanks

See man hwclock I think it is. And pay attention to the UTC offset
options unless you want the hardware clock at UTC. Also make sure your
timezone (TZ?) is set correctly else it might be off a fixed number of
hours from local time when you query the system for time, or look at it
on the menubar in x. In Cheyenne, you'll be -7 for a TZ setting IIRC.

I've also seen a one liner that used rdate, with that output piped to
hwtosys so that the RTC was reset at the same time. Maybe someone will
be kind enough to repost that one.

Subject: Newbie SCSI user needs help with CD Burner
Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 04:49:56 GMT

Folks,

I am trying to configure my CD Burner (an HP 7200i) on my system. It
is on an IDE interface.

I have seen on past posts that you have to use SCSI compatibility
drivers in order for the program "cdrecord" to work.

(I assume for "xcdroast" as well?)

Anyway, one of the posts said that you could load the appropriate
module by saying putting

insmod ide-scsi

in /etc/rc.d/rc.local.

I tried this, and the "cdrecord -scanbus" command did not find any
scsi devices.

I also saw a post that you might need to add the line

"hdd=ide-scsi"

I got no errors, but the cdrecord SCSI scan did not find anything.

(hdd is correct, as I have a regular CD rom as master on the secondary
IDE channel, and the 7200 as a slave on the secondary IDE.)

I also saw on a post that you may have to recompile a kernel. Now I
believe I remember how to do that, but I did not enjoy that. Someone
told me there was an X tool that allowed you to change only what you
needed in the kernel.

Does anyone know that was?

Will this fix my problem?

What am I forgetting?

Thanks in advance,

RJ

Was the Debian install OK, no errors? If so perhaps you're trying to boot
from the wrong drive. From the OK prompt, do a probe-scsi and see
what the target id is of your drive. The try boot diskX, where X is the
target id. On the old Suns, ID=3 was mapped to ID 0 and 0 to 3. Usually,
sca drives get there ID thru the interface, not with jumpers. I'm not
sure what ID it will default to.

There's another issue at stake here; namely, MSDOS style FDisked extended
partitions seldom like to release their hold on unused space. For example,
you may have a FAT32 1 gig partition on extended space, and your drive may
have another 4 gigs free. When you look in Linux's FDisk, this partition
will display as extended "+". When you try to make a logical partition or
add onto it (ie use some of that remaining 4 gigs), linux will tell you that
none of it is free (available).

Probably the easiest thing to do is go ahead and start installing Linux (be
sure you've written down any pertinent hardware info you might need like
addresses and ports for your NIC, modems, etc.); however, as far as subsequent
dual booting goes, I would probably opt for the "boot disk" method (I'm
assuming you have a 3.5 floppy drive on the machine still) rather than allowing
LILO to write to the hard disk. Dells can be a bit picky, and the "boot disk
method," while a tad slower at startup, will give you the easiest path backward
if you need it.

Depending upon where your linux partition is located on the disk, you might
need to use LOADLIN rather than lilo.

Also, we have alot of Dells, but I haven't seen that particular model yet. If
that model has the embedded graphics (which I'm assuming it does), you may have
problems getting linux to properly see the graphics chipset. I've seen this go
both way, but you really don't know until you try.

Just so you know, you CAN let LILO write directly to disk and still dual-boot
with Windows 2000. This isn't a problem; it's just a more difficult path back.
