The usual way to do this is to use Linux's dd to extract an image of the
Linux boot sector, thus:

dd if=/dev/hda7 of=linux.sct

(You must specify the correct boot partition in place of /dev/hda7.) You
then copy the resulting linux.sct file to a partition that's accessible
from NT/2K, and reference it in BOOT.INI something like this:

C:\linux.sct="Linux"

IMHO, this is pretty kludgy, because it requires extra steps if you ever
recompile your kernel. A better solution, IMHO, is to use a third-party
boot loader, like the BootMagic that comes with PartitionMagic, to
select between your Windows and Linux OSs. NT's OS Loader then functions
as a secondary OS selector, booting only NT.

FWIW, I cover these matters in more detail in my book, _The Multi-Boot
Configuration Handbook_ (http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/).

No; BootMagic resides on the Windows boot partition, which must be FAT.
Remove your 8MB primary partition and just install BootMagic on the main
FAT partitions.

Thanx for the quick reply. I did as you suggested and ran 'make clean' after
'make dep'. when I ran 'make bzImage' I got the exact same message ass before.

Can you help me find what I'm missing?

Thanx again

The immediate thing you can do is to take sendmail out from your startup
directory. It is in /etc/rc.d/init.d. Just move sendmail out of there.
However, the root of the problem is in that your network is not setup
probably. You may want to check you /etc/hosts file to see if your
hostname is linked to a proper ip.

        I really don't want to start from scratch and I don't have
a tape or CDR to back up to. I know RedHat's install process supports
upgrades and I've used it successfully going from 6.0 to 6.2 but
all the way from 5.2 to 6.2 is a bigger jump and I'm not sure how
well that has been tested. Any experiences simply indicating that
it worked fine would be nice.

Hi,

I attempted to setup a private, self-contained LAN with two computers
(Win98 & Redhat6.2), and have acheived connectivity between both (samba,
printers, telnet, ftp). However, I'm having some minor hiccups which
lead to to believe my network setup may be buggy.

The two problems I'm having are, from the linux box:

1) can't ping or nslookup localhost by name, but successful with
127.0.0.1

2) can't nslookup Win98 box by ip, but successful with hostname.

(can't find 192.168.1.6: non-existent host/domain)

My network is setup as follows:

domainname=swoosh.ca
linuxbox IP = 192.168.1.5 jedi.swoosh.ca jedi
win98    IP = 192.168.1.6 sith.swoosh.ca sith

nameserver=192.168.1.5
subnet mask= 255.255.255.240

I setup the linux box with the following params:

/etc/sysconfig/network
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=jedi.swoosh.ca
DOMAINNAME=swoosh.ca
FORWARD_IPV4=yes
GATEWAYDEV=eth0
GATEWAY=192.168.1.49

/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost

I believe the ARP tables should show every IP address?

Currently, the network *is functional*, but I would like to have a firm
setup before moving on to more complicated stuff.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Henry.
I have a dell with the montego II working with the aureal drivers. I used the
au8830.o module though. Have you tried that?
Also maybe you have something that is blocking your driver from accessing
the soundcard.. Have you checked your /etc/conf.modules file ?

        Mats

else that is blocking your soundcard

I've used the ./ prefix, and that's exactly when I get the permission denied
message. I was not aware, however, that the ownership had to be changed while
running it as root. I'll try that.

Hello,

I need some help abt install RedHat 6.2. I like to create a dual-boot
OS. I used Partition Magic to create a new partition with Linux-Native
as its File System. I created many partition..
C(FAT16): for boot up
D(FAT32): for Windows98
E(Linux-Ext): for Linux(still not install)
F(FAT32): data

After that i boot up with CD-Rom, that's ok until I have be asked
to select mount(?). I choose E as root(/), but the NEXT button still
disable. Until i temporary choose C:(or any other drive) as boot(/boot)
then the NEXT
button will Enable.

Is this means i have to create another partition for boot(/boot)??
Or i can share with Windows(both use C:)?? If i set boot to C:,
will it overwrite my Windows boot up file???

How many partition i needed...??

Thank you

Exactly. Isn't that the main advantage and reason to use opensource stuff? ;-)

If they just want everything by default, and .RPM every apps. Why not just stick

I've updated all the SuSE security fixes on everything that I use. SuSE has

I havd the SuSE DVD. I have been compiling everything from source since 6.0

I always buy the official CDs / DVD. Not the elval version from cheapbytes, or
