Did you install it in the same place (same IDE bus, same master/slave
state) as on the original machine? If not, you'll need to get the system
going from a rescue disk or something*, and re-run lilo with a suitably
modified lilo.conf file.

 * Maybe all you need is something like (at the LILO boot prompt):
   linux root=/dev/hdc1
if your disk is now master on the second IDE bus and the root partition
   is partition 1

Are the cabling and hub (if any) OK? Corruption of a small proportion of
packets - which get dropped and re-sent, after timeout delays, causes
this kind of performance loss.

Start by finding out what process is dropping the corefile (try

One possibility - gnome seems to be sensitive to system name changes. Do
you do anything odd with your system name or name service, e.g. when
dialling out? If so, you may be able to do something like hang up the phone
before logging out.

some kind of configuration file in which I need to set it. The TurboNetCfg

That;s really odd. I don't think I had to give my windows partitions mount
points. If you end up having to give it one, you could just ignore it or
remove any references to it in /etc/fstab if it even has any.

link to /dev/ttyS1 (COM2) but every time I try to get the connection

The Mandrake hardware configuration utility doesn't seem to see a modem

I went to several web sites and I can't find documentation for this

I have installed StarOffice 5.1 on a RH6.2 distribution and selected Palm
Connectivity. [The Palm talks (relatively) well to the Linux server via

I have completed the Palm Sync Options screens (to the best of my ability)

(If replying by e-mail, please note that I have implemented the "standard"

Hello,

I just upgraded to Red Hat 6.2. Originally I had this copied CD which
would not boot but then I got myself the original and things went fine.
Here is how I set up my partitions for a 6.4 GB hard drive:

[nzanella@tulip nzanella]$ df
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda11 109771 34682 69421 33% /
/dev/hda5 21929 2486 18311 12% /boot
/dev/hda1 822384 714848 107536 87% /dos
/dev/hda8 248895 8405 227640 4% /home
/dev/hda9 204951 39 194330 0% /tmp
/dev/hda7 2329036 1317708 893016 60% /usr
/dev/hda6 2336444 96 2217660 0% /usr/local
/dev/hda12 43885 14938 26681 36% /var
[nzanella@tulip nzanella]$

There are a few things I did not like about Red Hat Linux 6.2:

(i) When I booted the GUI installation failed so the system went
back to text mode. This is fine. However...

    (a) I was never prompted for any networking configuration
other than my hostname. I have a supported PCMCIA card.
I would have liked to specify IP address, netmask, name
servers, and gateway, during installation but I was
        never prompted for these details.

    (b) There has been an annoying buglet in the text mode installation
menu for a while: the lower right hand corner of the screen is
a different color than the rest of the screen, unlike in the
pictures at the back of the boxed set. Hmm...

Other than that things are running pretty smoothly.

Best Reagrds,

Neil

I'm afraid it wont work - /boot and kernel would be upper 1024 cyl. Lilo
should say it to you. ;-)
just make new boot small partition 10-15 mb under 1024 cyl ( let's say 2
gb - w98,15 mb - new boot,10gb w98,rest - linux and don't forget swap - i'd
put it closer to begining ;-)
copy(or move ;-)  initial(original) directory  /boot there;
mount new part. as /boot ;
edit lilo.cofig in proper way - boot= your_new_boot_part;
and say lilo;
edit mtab for proper root and boot mount (you'll see how when you'll open it
;-)
don't forget to have start diskett under hand if something goes wrong ;-)
if windoze is installed already - find partion magic (PM4 or 5) and repart
your disk as was said above ;-)

There have been a few changes lately to the tulip driver.
<http://www.scyld.com/network/tulip.html> says:

When updating a single driver you will need to build pci-scan.o
along with the specific driver.o file. This means that in
addition to the driver.c file, you must download pci-scan.c,
    pci-scan.h, and kern_compat.h.

Have you ever thought about a tool like Internet Toolbox that monitors
all of the sites and alerts/emails you if one or more does not respond?

Well worth it...

Subject: converting win partition to Linux...safely?
Date: 14 Aug 2000 00:44:21 GMT

I have a win partition that I'd like to scrap and convert to a
ext2 filesystem in a safe manner such that, assuming I don't screw up,
I can leave my linux partitions intact. Can this be done?

Assuming I make it past this step, in order to access this partition
when booting into Linux do I simply need to add an entry to /etc/fstab
and/or /etc/mtab?

Thanks!

What is the point when drives are so cheap? $200 will buy you a 45G
drive!

Now, some questions and requests for advice --

I have been following your various comments in comp.os.linux.hardware and other
newsgroups - you all strike me as something of gurus on this subject. (we will
let the definition of a guru go for the time being<G>)
I am new to Linux and am presently running a 33/100mhz P1 on win95 ver2
I want to build a system that will primarily run on Linux (which distro?) and on
Doze (ME?) which will run Quicken, my Auction Software and my email - Agent by
Forte.

1. Will this stuff work together under the new SuSe?
2. Which of the TWO video cards should I use?
3. Which Windows s/w should I use? 2K, ME, 98?
4. The RAID problem - I want to mirror one HDD to back up the other.
5. Which dial up modem? I am using a USR v.everything now - while I plan to
run on DSL, I would like to have back up connections. If I were going cable -
this would not be a maybe but a necessity. Warner Cable sucks in Houston!
6. Do I need a larger power supply?

Any suggestions before I box all this up and give it to the builders?

thanks
chas
