Installing LILO again works for me. Just type 'lilo' at the command
line.

I've installed MnDrk 7.1 and Win2k Advanced Server on my Dell Inspiron
laptop.

I fdisk-ed, and partitioned the HD, installed 2k first. 2k doesn't seem to
want control of the MBR.

Next I installed Mandrake. The linux installation picked up the 2k
install, and configured lilo just right for me. Both operating systems
boot fine.

I never installed NT4, but heard it needed it's own MBR, which you would
have to modify to boot linux. (lilo was not an option on the MBR w/NT4)

It seems that this is no longer an issue w/ 2k.

Good luck!

Yes, with mke2fs.

Only edit /etc/fstab.
/etc/mtab is automatically maintained by the mount command.

Subject: Running Windows applications under Linux
Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 01:48:03 GMT

I would appreciate advice from the experienced hands on whether it is
feasible to reliably run applications designed for windows under Linux
and what would be a suitable GUI interface to use.

I am at the stage of replacing/upgrading two pentium computers and
would like to plan for using Linux as the OS. My problem is that all
of the critical software I use was written for various flavours of
Windows. I have now discovered Star Office (using the Win version) and
am slowly using that for those tasks where I may have used MS Office
in the past.

I use Win98 on a home office network and Win NT on a separate
notebook. For internet access and modem sharing of our single modem
and dialup connection I use the Home version of Wingate.

I have SuSe 6.2 should I persevere with that, or would there be
advantages in getting SuSe 6.4.

Subject: Help with BIOS Problem

I know this is not exactly the correct news groups to ask this question
but I am desperate and hope someone can help. If you can provide the
name of a better group, that would be great too.

I have AMI BIOS 1.00.04.CS1T. I set up the user password under the BIOS
setup (F1 at boot). The password was 4275ed. I used the number pad to
enter this with num lock on. When I enter the password at boot, the 4
does not show up, ie a password masking * does not show up when I hit
the 4 on the num pad. It appears to be acting as a backspace. My
password is not accepted. I tried using the 4 on the horizontal numbers
on the keyboard and though it takes the character, the password does not
work. I tried using num lock on and off. My computer will no longer
boot.

I have another computer similar, and I found that if I go into the BIOS
password setup, using the 4 on the num pad works and an * is displayed.
It seems that the BIOS on the initial password setup took the 4 from the
num pad but does not take the 4 on the boot password prompt. I hope
there is something I can do to solve this problem. I don't know if my
computer is now trashed or if I can somehow clear the password or figure
out how to get the 4 on the num pad to work.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Subject: SCSI CDRW Locks up Redhat 6.1
Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 01:54:05 GMT

I just purchased a Yamaha 8x8x24 SCSI CD Recorder.
This replaces an IDE CD Recorder which I could not get to work under
Linux.

I installed it today, but after getting all software (cdrecord and
Xcdroast),
it is not working.

Everything shows to be installed and working properly.

However, when I actually go to write the cd, XCDRoast shows anywhere
from
17% to 43% complete (depending on burn speed) then the CD Recorder's
recording light goes off. The system is usable for about 1 minute, then
the
ENTIRE SYSTEM freezes up. Only way out is to power off the machine.
This happens every time.

RedHat 6.1.

INITIO Ultra SCSI PCI card which has been in the system for 2-3 months
without
problems. Has a scanner set on id 2, cd recorder on id 3.

In the SCSI BIOS, I had to set the drive to be allowed to use
ASynchronous
transfer for things to be stable under Windows. Either way, Linux does
not work.

Any clues. Is there some other parameter that need to be configured for
this
SCSI drive under linux?

After setting the SCSI BIOS to Async transfer mode, it works great under
Win98.
Made 3 different CDs.

Does "ls -l /dev/lp*" return something saying that /dev/lp0 is there?
It should.

Try executing the following commands:
insmod parport
insmod parport_pc
insmod lp

That loads the modules for generic parallel port support, IBM-PC style
parallel ports, and printer support. After that, you should be able to
echo things to /dev/lp0 and get some kind of response from the printer.

IIRC, some RedHat releases shipped with a defect in their module setup.
You may be able to fix this by adding the line
  alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
to the file /etc/conf.modules . HTH,

The docs for your computer or motherboard should show the jumper to clear
the password or reset the BIOS. But you don't say what hardware you have.

YOu will probably want to load some useful macros, so when

        load tabkey
is one of them.

ircii is best when used with a reasonable script.

Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 03:01:36 GMT

I have installed RH 6.2 with KDE for my first experience with Linux. My
Monitor was not recognized, so I used Xconfigurator to get it going with
the known capabilities, which include resolutions from 640x480 to
1280x1024.

The problem is that when the GUI (KDE) starts, the resolution is low and
the window is larger than the viewport. "CTRL-alt +" fixes that, of
course. I would like to have it come up in the 800x600 resolution so
manual intervention is unneccessary.

Is there a way to configure a default resolution during startup? I have
not seen anything like that in the configuration files. Since I am not
at all familiar with the Unix/Linux way, perhaps I've missed something
and would appreciate a pointer to helpful info. (I have 2 thick manuals
on RH Linux. Neither addresses this point!)

Edit your XF86Config (usually in /etc/X11/):

Section "Screen"
    Subsection "Display"
        Modes "1536x1152" "1280x960" "1024x768" "PAL"

for all the ``Modes'' lines, put the resolution you want to
be the default first.

To set a default color depth, add a line at the start of the
``Screen'' section, like this:

    DefaultColorDepth 16

Does someone know what could be the problem?
