Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Could anyone please explain to me what this message means in my secure
log file and what I should do?

pam_console[957]: console tty1 is owned by UID 0
pam_console[957]: console tty1 is a character device
login: LOGIN ON tty1 BY user

I am using RH 6.2. The message began to appear every time I logout/login
after I uninstalled some of the RPM packages which I thought were not in
use like portmapper and some others. Before that I used to have only the
last line in my log file whenever I logout/login.

Unfortunately I didn't save the list of deleted packages...

Is it good or bad news in this message?

Cheers,

Andrey.

You could use fdisk (either in dos or linux) to delete the windows partition,
then use linux's fdisk to recreate the partition, assuming that you didn't have
needed data on the win partition.

Yup. mount recognizes partitions as soon as they are partitioned and formatted.

The fixed font is in the misc directroy, and X will not start without it.

Re-install X from the rpm, or at least install the RPM that includes the
misc font directory.

Do an rpm -qf /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc to find out what RPM
the directory came from.

Just use Xconfigurator or (preferably) XF86Setup to change the resolution. (If
you use XF86Setup and it asks you whether "this is a reconfiguration", say no.)

Xconfigurator and XF86Setup are just program front-ends to altering the X setup
files.

I wonder why your manuals don't say a thing on (re-)configuring X....

I would like to create a (bootable) ISO-file which I then move to my

What I have posted here is from the linux FAQ
(http://www.linuxdoc.org/FAQ/Linux-FAQ/). Go and RTFM....

<begin-faq-quote>
4.3. Does Linux support compressed ext2 file systems?

The ext2compr project provides a kernel patch.
There is also a Web site for the e2compr patches. The code is still
experimental and consists of patches for the 2.0 and 2.1 kernels.
zlibc is a program that allows existing applications to read compressed (GNU
gzip'ed) files as if they were not compressed.
There is also a compressing block device driver, "DouBle," by Jean-Marc
Verbavatz, which can provide on-the-fly disk compression in the kernel. This
driver compresses inodes and directory information as well as files, so any
corruption of the file system is likely to be serious.

<begin-comment> The closest thing to dos/windoze drivespace? <end-comment>

There is also a package called tcx (Transparently Compressed Executables),
which allows you to keep infrequently compressed executables compressed and
only uncompress them temporarily when in use.
<end-faq-quote>

If you want the addresses to each of these programs refer to the linux FAQ.

Perhaps it's a hardware fault on the keyboard.

Hello,

I have Caldera Linux 2.3. I just installed all the rpms from
ftp.calderasystems.com/pub/OpenLinux/updates/2.3/current/ After I
installed the xemacs set of rpms, I noticed that I couldn't run xemacs
due to an error that said "...libXm.so.1 cannot be opened...file
missing."

I have searched my Caldera 2.3 distro CD's and a Corel distro CD but
I
am unable to locate the library file. Does anybody know where I can
get the library file libXm.so.1? Why didn't the Xemacs rpms include
this library if Xemacs needs it to run?

Thank you for your help,

I'm not very experienced with Linux, and I recently installed Linux 6.2 from
freesoftware.com on an old 300MHz computer. My problem is I can't get
wu_ftp to authenticate me. If I log in anonymously I can get in fine but if
I use my account or even root, it fails authentication. I tried following
the steps at:
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/tips/FTP-Setup-Tips/FTP-Setup-Tips.html

Any ideas? Anything else I need to mention?

Look at /etc/ftpaccess and make sure in the class lines local or remore

I'm trying to install Postfix. My release is a Suse 6.2.
Postfix needs the chkconfig packages but chkconfig fiels are in conflict

I know aaa_dir is a "base" pasckage in SUSE and responsible for the
directory structure of the system...I guess i can't remove it without
messing up the system.

I had the SAME problem on a machine of mine.

Turns out the machine had an LS-120 floppy, and I had disabled the floppy
interface in the BIOS. The install was hangining attempting to load the
floppy driver.

Re-enabling the floppy interface (despite no real attached floppy) fixed it.

I installed Red Hat Linux 6.1 with apparent success on an old Pentium 120

give commands at the command line) but KDE gives all kinds of "XWindow not

If you know how to run Linux from the console, you can use lynx to
download some upgrades at:
http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM/Helix_GNOME_0.2.1_(for_Red_Hat_Linux_6.x).html
and install them via RPM. If these don't work, you have some other
problem.
