Hi,
I'm trying to setup my printer on Linux. I want to print
to an SMB printer but it doesn't work. It seems to me as
though it's a DNS problem or something. In the messages
file I see:
Aug 14 16:18:57 localhost lpd[3900]: unable to get official name
for remote machine
What is the problem? Where should I start looking?
Thanks,

Subject: open ports for Zone
Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 21:34:22 GMT
Hello!
I need to open the following ports on my linux box. I use it as dial-up for
my windows clients and use ipchains with RH6.2. This info about what ports i
need is from http://www.tsmservices.com/masq/detailform.php3?171.
Allow an initial outbound TCP connection on port 47624.
Allow subsequent inbound and outbound connections on TCP and UDP ports
2300-2400.
Set appropriate permissions for DirectPlay (Client).
Additionally, to play games on the Zone, the following TCP ports on the
firewall must be open: 28800 - 28912
My question is how to make this in ipchains?

Ernie,
Your distro is having trouble determining your graphics system.
Form the command prompt as root enter:
xf86config
Answer the questions correctly and you should have X up and
running in no time.
Good Luck,

No. That's why I don't follow the kernel of the day. The Duck Soup de Jouir.
I'm still running 2.2.14. That was 2.5 months ago, before that, it's 2.0.13.
Have no intention to use even 2.2.16, let alone 2.4.micky. ;-)
I update the kernel every 12 months or so. I only care about stability. I don't
care about the latest and the trendiest 3D video card, sound card, ATAdrivers etc.
No games in any of my boxes. I play my music , watch my DVDs on stand alone home
players on real sound system. ;-)
I just update whatever needed for security bug fixes on the apps that I use. And
there ain't that many. Since Linux is basically my net surfing box. All my real
servers run on *BSD and commercial unix.

Subject: Cannot mount CD-ROM drive
Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 23:55:16 -0100
Hi Linux-Cracks,
I have installed RedHat-Linux 6.0 on my Pentium II machine and now
nearly everything runs fine, except my CD -ROM drive.
/etc/fstab contains the following line:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,exec,dev,suid,ro,uid=0,gid=0 0 0
(/dev/cdrom refers to /dev/hdc)
When I try to mount the drive with "mount /dev/cdrom" I receive the
error message
"mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/cdrom as a block device
(maybe `insmo driver'?)"
How can I fix this problem? Does the kernel need additional parameters
when it is started?
I have already tried using "kernelcfg", but I don't know what kind of
module and which arguments
I must apply. Where can I find the information I need?
Thanks a lot for every hint!

Subject: Installing programs and the swap partition
Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2000 22:13:22 GMT
I have two quick questions:
When you install an application, whether it be from an RPM or from
source, it wants to install its files into directories on the root
filesystem. If I was to mount my Zip drive, is there any way that I could
install software to a Zip disk and run it from there instead of my hard
drive? I assume that it may be a matter of editing the makefile script,
but frankly I wouldn't know how to approach it.
The other question I have relates to the Linux swap partition. I
currently have 32Mb of physical RAM and a 64Mb swap partition. I am about
to upgrade to 96Mb of RAM, but I really don't want to have to adjust the
size of my swap partition. Is it going to be okay to just leave it as it
is?

Can't be done. Partition Magic is your best bet. There are some others
that cost less, but I don't know of any free ones.

I had far more trouble installing windows95 than I had with linux. I
agree that X configuration is just the worst part of the linux install.

I'll be surprised if you don't get flamed for that one!

See below. Use XFree86 3.3.6. XFree86 4.0.1 is not quite ready for the
i810--or for general usage, although it can be made to work. It will
likely take a revision or two before version 4 can totally replace
3.3.6.

Suse 6.4 is probably your best bet.
Otherwise, I've got my i810 board working wonderfully using the linux
video drivers at support.intel.com, and sound at www.alsa-project.org.
Can't help with the ethernet card, though.

Hi
I've installed a number of programs from their source code. Now to
free up space I'd like to delete old programs I no longer use. But
files from these programs are spread around /usr/loca/app_name,
/usr/local/bin, /usr/bin, etc. and who knows what other directories.
What's the best approach to delete all the files from one app?

Yes, you can. The only "hardware" you need is a null modem serial cable
to connect the two serial ports. From there, this section of the PPP
HOWTO should get you started:

Even if you have only a single unnetworked desktop computer, linux in
general and lpd in particular want to assume that you are on a network.
You'll need to run netconfig (or whatever the equivalent program is on
your distribution).

OK. How about we instead talk about what sort of problems you're
having, so we can help you? Can you get into video mode at all? Does
Linux not boot? I know there are people happily running Linux on the
810, so it's certainly possible.

I have a second IDE hard drive in my Linux RedHat 6.0 box ( hdb ). When
I run e2fsck, I get the following:
---
e2fsck 1.14, 9-Jan-1999 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
e2fsck: Is a directory while trying to open /mnt/hdb
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate
superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
---
I did try running e2fsck with the different superblocks, but the error
message remains the same. When I run df -T I get the following:

What I want to do is move the /usr directory to hdb so I can upgrade to
RedHat 6.2, but I don't want to try it until I can verify that hdb is
good. I can read and write to hdb OK and am experiencing no data loss on
it (I have a cron job that writes backup files to it every couple of
hours.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
