Subject: Setting a IDE CDROM as SCSI

Hi,
I'm running Mandrake 8.0 with kernel 2.4.3, and I have a CD-ROM and a
CD-RW both IDEs. The burner is working under /dev/scd0 (0,0,0) but the
reader is working under /dev/hdc, so cdrecord -scanbus doesn't detect
the reader. I'd like that both work under /dev/scd*. I've recompiled the
kernel to statically link the SCSI emulation and the SCSI support and
SCSI generic support, and I've added to the /etc/lilo.conf the line
append=3D" hdc=3Dide-scsi quiet"
but nothing is change changed. My CD burner was left at /dev/scd0 and
is still recognized as a SCSI device, at 0,0,0, but my reader
continues under /dev/hdc . What should I do?
Cheers.
Tomas
PS: The output of the cdrecord -scanbus is:

Subject: Resize a extended partition
Date: 8 Jun 2001 12:29:43 -0700
Hi,
my brother has the following partition table
hda1 3000MB Win98 (Fat32)
hda2 3000MB empty (Fat32)
hda4 Extended
hda5 10GB Win98 Data (Fat32)
hda6 13GB Win98 Data (Fat32)
Is it possible (and useful, apart from the small space ;-)) to install
Linux using the following Layout:
hda1 3000MB Win98
hda2 2850MB Linux
hda3 150MB Linux Swap
....?
I don't know if this works with two primary partitions (Linux and
Linux Swap)? Maybe I haven't enough faith in Linux. :)
If not, is it possible to delete hda2 and resize the extended
partition that it includes the space of hda2 without data loss on hda5
and hda6? Can this be done with fdisk with the extended commands
safely?
Thanx for any help.

Subject: Old Video Components Setup
Date: Fri, 08 Jun 2001 19:33:11 GMT
I have an ancient Diamond Stealth VRAM video card (ISA, DCS 2824-0 Clock,
SC1148 3CV RAMDAC, P86C911 Chipset, BIOS v.2.31, 1 MB VRAM) that I'm using
with an even older Mitsubishi XC-1429C monitor (this is a VGA 0.28 dot pitch
monitor; not sure if it's multiscanning). I'm trying to install this on
RedHat v.7.1 with little success in activating the proper video for the X
windows system. I can designate the proper adapter but 1) there is no
monitor matching mine and I don't have the manual for it so I can't manually
assign the refresh rates, etc, 2) when Generic is chosen (no matter which
generic monitor), only the bottom-left portion of the video shows upon
activation of X, 3) it's very odd that the Standard 640x480 256 colors
doesn't work because I'm positive that's what's shown when Linux is booting
up (the full screen dialog where you select the OS to boot; LILO i believe
it's called).
Is there a site that archives old hardware settings out there in cyber-space
anywhere? What could explain only a portion of the video showing up? Thx
for any assistance.

I don't remember which is the X-login runlevel, but in Debian I believe
that the standard-login runlevel is 2, not 3.

It'll work fine. You can have up to four primary partitions on a drive,
and it doesn't matter what types they are.

I don't know about that one. It doesn't look like it, from the fdisk
extended commands menu. If you need to resize partitions, it's probably
better to go with Partition Magic.

Subject: NO modules will load after kernel recompile!

Well,
I'm trying to get the Alcatel Speedtouch 'slug' working in Mandrake 8, but
forget about that. I'm having problems rebuilding the kernel. Everytime I
recompile, I get lots of errors on bootup, and I've figured out what's
happening. I've now noticed what's happening. First, here are the steps I
use to rebuild:
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
make install
make modules_install
i ALWAYS get errors on 'make modules' and 'make modules_install'. and I
actually noticed that one of my previous attempts. Keeping in mind that
after the recompile, i get a bazillion errors on bootup, including bringing
up eth0, and the USB filesystem, a lighbulb finally came on and I did an
'lsmod' Guess what?... NOTHING was listed. not a single module loaded. I
then tried modprobe \* and got a screen full of errors and one pidly module
actually loads...something insignificant. what the hell is happening to my
modules?

Windows install its own boot loader over lilo. Just boot from your boot
floppy and log in as root. Then run "lilo"

OK, got that fixed. Thanks.
Now I have another question. When I installed RH the hard drive would
auto detect from the bios with winme. Now it won't, and I have to use
the boot disk to start RH. I notice the boot disk loads the hard
drive. What gives with that?

Note that the quoted language says "log in as normal". Normal for me is
using a GUI, which has the username and password entered in once upon a
long ago time. Since pap-secrets contains this same info, I would think
that when minicom puts up my ISP's login response, that that would be
the time to exit mincom so that pppd could be started and take the
required info from pap-secrets. But, it doesn't matter whether I put in
my username and password in minicom in response to the prompts and then
exit and run pppd, or go right ahead and exit minicom and execute pppd.
Either way, I get the screen gibberish, but never a default route
through my ISP (route -n remains nothing but local entries), the
connection times out, and the modem hangs up.

If your file is ASCII text, convert it to postscript using enscript.
Invoke gv with the name of the file and use gv to print odd pages, resort
them and then print the even pages.
Or convert the postscript file to PDF and use acroread to print even more
selectively.

No. Usually it's _either_ straight ppp connection with PAP/CHAP authentication
or a shell login with username/password prompt. You can only do the latter with
minicom. The HOWTO assumes that once you get through username/password stage in
minicom you should start ppp on remote end, then quit minicom and start ppp
locally. PAP/CHAP authentication shouldn't work then as you've already
authenticated yourself with username/password.
As for "normal login using GUI", all it does is save your username/password in
its equivalent of pap/chap-secrets file on the first successful login. With pppd
you have to create those files yourself, that's all. This has nothing to do with
minicom, minicom is like HyperTerminal.

RTF pppd M and pay attention to "defaultroute" and "noipdefault" options, and
also "passive" and "silent" options.

Jun 7 17:30:44 localhost WvDial: Modem not responding.
Jun 7 17:30:44 localhost pppd[1292]: Connect script failed
Jun 7 17:33:13 localhost pppd[1292]: Terminating on signal 15.
Jun 7 17:33:13 localhost pppd[1292]: Exit.
I have tried configuring with kppp and RH-PPP Dialer and get the same
problem.
My second problem ( I don't know if it is related to the first ) is
this: When I try to download a large file, say the linux kernel,
everything seems to work fine initially. Then with maybe a 1/4 left to
go it stalls. This happens consistently. If I cancel the download and
start again the the same thing happens.
Any help would be great,
Paul
