Some "mount" commands are designed to be installed s-uid root,
with a designation in the fstab file as to whether a given
volume is user-mountable (this is common on Linux systems).
A more generic method (and one with finer-grained control) is
to use "sudo" (or its equivalent).

Hi,
I have Redhat 6.1 installed and do not have /sbin/ide_info.
I put a PCMCIA-IDE converter and connect a second 2.5" hard disk to my
Sony notebook computer. It successfully detects it is an IBM hard

Subject: sb1000 and the 2.4 kernel
Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 05:57:05 GMT
I figured I'd have to share this one just in case there are alot of
people upgrading to the 2.4 kernel with hybrid sb1000 module one
way cablemodems.
I recently installed the Caldera Technology Preview (which installed
flawlessly other than the cablemodem).
I saw where there was an isapnp bug which breaks the sb1000.
Apparently,
it can't find it's IRQ. I managed to get past this so I figured I'd
share how:
First of all, I had to generate a new kernel via:
cd /usr/src/linux
make mrproper
make xconfig
make bzImage
Then cding to the /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot directory,
popping in a floppy and typing "dd if=bzImage of=fd0" to make
a boot disk to test my new kernel. If it doesn't boot via the
floppy, I make xconfig trying to figure out why and repeat the
process. It worked for me the first time.
I then commited myself to the new kernel via:
cd /usr/src/linux
make install
make modules_install
And then rebooted. The new kernel worked fine but alot of modules were
missing symbols. I then repeated the make xconfig process, but this
time I disabled versioning since it was appending _R98729 type strings
at the end of my symbols, apparently this is done safety reasons.
Anyway, the new kernel came up fine. Surfboard was even identified.
I then did the old "pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf", configured it for IRQ
10
since that matched my windows setting and uncommenting the ACT Y
line, I ran "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf".
I then did a:
/sbin/ifconfig cm0 down
/sbin/rmmod sb1000
and
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 down
to turn off my other ethernet card to clear my router table. I'd worry
about making them work in tandem later and didn't need the extra
hassle at the moment.
When i got the
Aug 16 01:20:06 snafu modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module

Aug 16 01:20:06 snafu modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module

Aug 13 21:37:25 snafu kernel: cm0: sb1000 at (0x100,0x110), S/N
0xffffffff, IRQ0.
message, IRQ was 0 not 10. Needless to say, it didn't work. Also there
was something wierd going on with ppp-compress.
Looking in /etc/modules.conf I saw:
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp.o
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate.o
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate.o
and realized these were aliases for bsd compession and ppp deflation
modules. Wierd, but I decided to hand insert them via:
/sbin/insmod bsd_comp
/sbin/insmod ppp_deflate
Making a note that this was too cumbersome to do repeatedly and
ensure I later wrote an init.d script to do this at bootup.
I then decided to hand edit the sb1000 module located in
/usr/src/linux/drivers/net/sb1000.c
changing the lines:
191c191
< dev->irq = irq = 10;
---
> irq = idev->irq;
basically hardwiring my cablemodem's irq to 10 instead of leaving the
assignment up to the broken isapnp.
I then:
killall pppd
/sbin/ifconfig cm0 down
/sbin/rmmod sb1000
to disconnect and remove the previous module from my currently running
kernel.
cd /usr/src/linux
make
make modules
and a new sb1000.o file appeared in /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/sb1000.o
I copied that to the corresponding modules directory:
/lib/modules/2.4.0/net/sb1000.o
This time when I tried to connect via my ppp scripts, the fventuri
message looked like (I did not have to reboot my machine):
Aug 16 01:23:55 snafu kernel: cm0: sb1000 at (0x100,0x110), S/N
0xffffffff, IRQ10.
Aug 16 01:23:55 snafu kernel: sb1000.c:v1.1.2 6/01/98
([EMAIL PROTECTED])
The hardwired IRQ had worked and the ppp-compression messages were gone
as well. I was online and soon typing the message you read before you.
Anyway, hope this helps someone out there avoid what I had to go
through.

Yea, I just found out today. I'm learning as I go.
At any rate, my Linux died when I was trying to fix the PATH problem, and I
had to re-install. Now the Mandrake install died on me. So now I got more
serious problems.

Subject: kernel 2.2.16-3 'make bzImage' compile error in
Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 06:09:43 GMT
I am running Redhat 6.2 linux (kernel 2.2.14) and encountered a problem
while trying to patch it to 2.2.16-3,
following instructions at
http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/RHSA-2000-037-05.html and
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/howto/kernel-upgrade/.
First I updated RPM itself as instructed on the Redhat site via:
rpm -Fvh rpm-3.0.5-9.6x.i386.rpm
Then I downloaded the RPMs and unpacked them:
rpm -Uvh kernel-headers-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm
kernel-source-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm
rpm -ivh kernel-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm kernel-ibcs-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm
kernel-pcmcia-cs-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm
Man page conflicts with the previous kernel-pcmcia package required:
rpm -ivh --force kernel-pcmcia-cs-2.2.16-3.i386.rpm
Then after 'cd /usr/src/linux-2.2.16' I find:
#make xconfig -- OK
#make dep -- OK
#make clean -- OK
#make bzImage -- *** PROBLEM!!! ***:
gcc -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -o
scripts/split-include

from scripts/split-include.c:26:
/usr/include/bits/errno.h:25: linux/errno.h: No such file or directory
make: *** [scripts/split-include] Error 1
Therefore I seem to have the same error reported by H.T. Leung on
linux.sources.kernel.
A solution offered by [EMAIL PROTECTED]
"By simply making the symlink from /usr/src/linux-2.2.16 to
/usr/src/linux, you will resolve this."
does not work for me. The RPM source code installation had already
moved the softlink
to point to the new source directory tree, as you can see here:
#ls -l /usr/src
total 12
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 12 Aug 13 21:25 linux ->
linux-2.2.16
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 Aug 13 21:26 linux-2.2.14
drwxr-xr-x 18 root root 4096 Aug 13 22:15 linux-2.2.16
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 Jul 22 05:04 redhat
but I still get this errno.h compile error.
I suspect that another critical softlink is missing that got zapped
during the process.
Surely other folks have encountered this same problem...
Would someone please kindly post a complete solution for this
compilation error? Thanks.

Hello,
To save tedious boot time, I would like to
have a program or kernel patch that does approximately
the following:
- unmount most hard disk partitions
- swap out everything that can be swapped out
- save an image of the raw memory to the hard disk such that it
can be recovered from the boot loader
(not shure about how to handle time gracefully)
Do I need the APM package? Even if my PC isnt APM-compatible?

And why exactly should he not place lilo in the MBR?
I have a dual boot system and placed lilo in the MBR. (Can't find a
reason why not to) and it runs like a charm.

put an entry in the fstab file and mount it using only the device node
name or the mount point as an argument.
So the command:
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows
is only allowed for the root user, even after putting an entry in
fstab!,
but the command:
mount /mnt/windows
or
mount /dev/hda1
is allowed by all users if a line in fstab is included which describes
the device to mount on the mountpoint specified.

Hi
I have many years experience in Windows and Novell installation and
configuring and now find it very strange to be a "newbie" again (but also
very exciting).
So here is my first question.
I have installed Red Hat 6.1 on a dual boot system (lilo) successfully,
however, I choose on the installation to use Gnome as my GUI.
But when start 6.1 and I login, the GUI does not fire up. What am I doing
wrong?

I would recommend removing the windows hard drive just so you don't
accidentally mess things up on your first install. If you make a hasty
decision, you could wipe it clean and then some. I recommend this because
it minimizes the risk of you accidentally losing data while in a tinker
mode.
BUT, after you install your favored distro of linux on your new hard drive,
I'd make that the primary hard drive and the windows the secondary hard
drive. This may sound weird, but it works extremely well for me and I've
recommended it for as long as I've used it.
Using LILO as your OS boot loader, you can pass a few options to fake out
the bios inot thinking the hard drives are in different positions. Read the
LILO user guide, and around page 27 you'll see an option 'map-drive'. This
is what I use. I almost use the os2 example verbatim.
Again, once you install your distro and get it booting properly, etc...
install the windows hard drive as the second hard drive. Then, edit your
/etc/lilo.conf file adding the windows as another os boot option passing the
map-drive params to the bios. It works great.
email me if you have other questions.

Maybe the XServer is not configured correctly, check into the
/etc/inittab if the "initdefault" parameter is set to 5, should look
something like:
id:5:initdefault:
If so, then Linux will try to start the X Server during the login
process, if the line looks like
id:3:initdefault:
then Linux will go for a normal console startup (non-gui).

You have a geometry mismatch problem. I've been through this too, so bear
with the workaround.
You may have the jumpers incorrectly positioned on the hard drive, or lilo
didn't get the right geometry at boot time. I got around this by wiping the
disk clean (with the manufacture's utlilities) and then reinstalling. When
you first reinstall, do a minimal install to save time. You can always add
stuff later.
If it reboots and does the same, you may have to pass special options to
lilo. Just beware of the jumpers on the hard drive and then do a minimal
install. Installing lilo on the MBR shouldn't be a problem. I have a dual
boot system that works without hitch. I've even installed other OSs to make
a triple boot system.

I use an ACER 8x4x32 with 8M of memory buffer. It's an IDE drive, and
Mandrake recognizes it as such and does scsi emulation to make it work.

Subject: Problem Exiting XFree
Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 10:00:41 +0200
First of all I must say that I know quite nothing about Linux, I've
installed it about one week ago on my computer.
Simply: I configured the SVGA server which works fine but when it exits (by
pressing CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE or switching to another account with
CTRL+ALT+Fx), the screen is desynchronized. I've looked at www.xfree86.org
for this problem but it is not mentioned in any faq or "know problems"
sections of the rendition.html files.
I tried savetextmode and textmode commands, but they did not fix the
problem. My video board is a 3D Blaster PCI 4Mb, with Rendition Verit v1000
chip (revision 2).
I've tried both RedHat 6.2, Mandrake 7.1 and Mandrake 7.1 with Xfree86
upgraded to version 4.0.1, but the problem always appeared.
Any help would be very appreciated :)
Thanks a lot
Vicchius
PS: by the way, how can I avoid the auto-loading of the X-server after the
boot process under Mandrake 7.1?

Subject: WindowsNT Domain Controller logon via Linux
My distribution is SuSe 6.4.
I'm using a linux box as a gateway with firewalling/masquerading setup.
On one side of this linux box is our company network, where the linux
box is part of, and on the other side is a WindowsNT box. I have an
account in the companies network so I could logon via "Member of
DOMAIN". Now I configured my NT station so that it can reach all the
computers in the companies network (I can ping them and I can also find
the other computers using Find on the NT browser). Now the problem is
that I can't use "Member of DOMAIN". The NT box alwyas says that the
domain controller can't be located for that domain. When I use find I
can locate the domain controller and I also can login and map drives to
it.
Why doesn't NT find the domain controller whne I try to set it in
network properties as the default method of authentication?
How do I have to set up the linux box that this works? Does this have
something to do with the smd service on linux? I configured it to use
security=domain and also provided the passwordserver but I'm not sure
what I really have to do about it. Is there somewhere a page that
describes how to connect an NT box to a domain via a linux gateway?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Subject: Creative VIBRA 128 problem on RH 6.2
Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 18:09:28 +1000
I'm trying to get my VIBRA 128 working in RH6.2. It detects as the Ensoniq
1371 chipset, but the module complains "device or resource" busy. I've tried
both the OSS and the ALSA drivers, both come up with the same thing. In my
boot messages, the kernel seems to be seeing the card on IRQ 0, which of
course is not possible. I've tried switching the PCI slot it's in, and I've
tried manually specifying an IRQ for it in my BIOS (I'm running an Athlon
700 on an ASUS K7V), with no luck. It works fine in Windows however, which
is disturbing.
Please, if you have any information, could you please CC to my email at
[EMAIL PROTECTED], as I don't check the newsgroups all that often.
Thank you very much,
Johan Venter.
